Technology adoption has been studied through two perspectives - of acceptance and of resistance. While acceptance has been sufficiently researched, resistance is understudied resulting in a less comprehensive understanding of technology adoption. This study examines technology resistance within the framework of task-technology interaction. Task-technology interaction has been defined based on the level of tasktechnology integration which has led to the identification of two types of interaction: intrinsic and extrinsic tasks to the technology. Within this framework, the study adopts cognitive load perspective to argue that introduction of a technology generates cognitive load by challenging the status quo of required working memory to perform the task which results in the technology resistance. The study further argues that level and influence of cognitive load on resistance are higher in extrinsic tasks compared to intrinsic tasks to the technology.

Examining Technology resistance: A cognitive load perspective

This study examines the use of the ‘Jaankari' e-government project by marginalized communities. The Jaankari system, implemented in the state of Bihar in India, enables people to call in and make information requests to government departments. Citizens may speak in their own language and from their own location. Results of an analysis of the data of the call records, when regressed against socio-economic parameters, show that people from marginal communities rely on this service. Those from non-dominant castes and women, in particular, use the system in excess of those from more privileged backgrounds. The paper shows implications of these findings for e-governance research and practice.

Is a ragpicker's child likely to be a ragpicker?

Gini index is a widely used measure of economic inequality. This article develops a theory and methodology for constructing a confidence interval for Gini index with a specified confidence coefficient and a specified width without assuming any specific distribution of the data. Fixed sample size methods cannot simultaneously achieve both specified confidence coefficient and fixed width. We develop a purely sequential procedure for interval estimation of Gini index with a specified confidence coefficient and a specified margin of error. Optimality properties of the proposed method, namely first order asymptotic efficiency and asymptotic consistency properties are proved under mild moment assumptions of the distribution of the data. © 2016 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Estimation of Gini index within pre-specified error bound

This paper describes components and outcomes of an interdisciplinary undergraduate research program intended to motivate female students to graduate with STEM degrees. This year, the program graduated the first student, who is the first STEM graduate in her family. The program is intended to inspire underrepresented undergraduate students to graduate with STEM bachelor's degrees by providing participating students with unique mentorship from distinguished leaders in STEM fields while the students simultaneously pursue technical research. The mentorship is provided to the students when they identify and interview leaders whose careers align with the desired career fields of the students. The interviews are conducted in collaboration with the IEEE History Center and American Institute of Physics. Research results produced by the students are presented at national conferences and published in conference proceedings. Transcripts of the interviews are published in perpetuity on the IEEE Engineering Technology and History Wiki. The project will continue within the STEM environment. © 2016 IEEE.

Components and outcomes of an interdisciplinary research program to inspire underrepresented undergraduate students in STEM fields

Motivated by the fact that emerging-market firms are increasingly internationalizing their operations, this study explores the influence of product-related factors on the internationalization modes of emerging market born global firms, in terms of their initial and continued international expansion. Based on data from seven born globals in the Indian apparel industry, we find that these firms continue to be global players using low-commitment internationalization modes in their initial and continued internationalization, and that their product offerings influence their selection of entry modes and their acquisition of foreign customer knowledge. We have identified and bridged a gap in the knowledgebased internationalization process perspective relating to the influence of product-related factors on companies’ acquisition of foreign market knowledge and internationalization processes. © The Author(s) 2017.

Emerging-market born globals: The influence of product-related factors on internationalization mode in the Indian apparel industry

Intelligence and cognitive abilities often denoted good thinking. However, critics of intelligence tests have long pointed out that the failures of rational judgments and decision-making imperfectly correlate with intelligence.Reviewing the work of Keith Stanovich and his colleagues, paper highlights the role of individual differences in judgment and decision-making. Paper presents a case for typical performance measure of cognitive ability besides thinking dispositions to explain variations in rational thought. Specifically, we examine and model the relationship between need for cognition (a measure of thinking dispositions), absorptive capacity (typical performance measure of intelligence) and normative decision-making tasks. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.

Rationality and the reflective mind: A case for typical performance measure of cognitive ability

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of select technical higher education institutes of national importance in India. This helps to judge the efficiency and effectiveness of an institute to provide valuable insights on performance measurement and effectiveness not only to the respective institute but also to governmental agencies and policymakers. Design/methodology/approach – The paper makes a comparative analysis across various educational institutes of repute. This paper looks at the performance of four technical higher education institutes of India. An integrated data envelopment analysis–analytic hierarchy processing (DEA–AHP) approach has been used to compare and evaluate the relative efficiencies in terms of input provided to the institute to produce outputs. Findings – The results depict the performances of the four institutes over the period of five years and, in turn, help assess the increase or decrease in the performance of a particular institute in comparative assessment. The paper also helps identify the most efficient institute among the four institutes that have been compared, in terms of academic efficiency, research efficiency, teaching efficiency and consulting efficiency. Practical implications – A study like this would furnish an insight into the performance of the select higher educational institutes. The findings can be useful for policymakers, educational planners and administrators in designing a system based on various criteria that can help improve the overall efficiency and decide about benchmarking and funding strategies. Originality/value – This paper is an attempt toward defining, conceptualizing and measuring performance effectiveness of institutes of higher education in the Indian context. The effort at the integration of the methodologies (through comparison and DEA–AHP) has helped to provide insights that could not have been obtained through the use of the methods or techniques alone. The paper has helped identify critical strategic issues and parameters which when implemented would be useful for policymakers, educational planners and administrators in designing a system based on various criteria that can help improve the overall efficiency of educational institutes in higher education. © 2016, © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

A comparative assessment of the performance of select higher education institutes in India

The coefficient of variation is an effect size measure with many potential uses in psychology and related disciplines. We propose a general theory for a sequential estimation of the population coefficient of variation that considers both the sampling error and the study cost, importantly without specific distributional assumptions. Fixed sample size planning methods, commonly used in psychology and related fields, cannot simultaneously minimize both the sampling error and the study cost. The sequential procedure we develop is the first sequential sampling procedure developed for estimating the coefficient of variation. We first present a method of planning a pilot sample size after the research goals are specified by the researcher. Then, after collecting a sample size as large as the estimated pilot sample size, a check is performed to assess whether the conditions necessary to stop the data collection have been satisfied. If not an additional observation is collected and the check is performed again. This process continues, sequentially, until a stopping rule involving a risk function is satisfied. Our method ensures that the sampling error and the study costs are considered simultaneously so that the cost is not higher than necessary for the tolerable sampling error. We also demonstrate a variety of properties of the distribution of the final sample size for five different distributions under a variety of conditions with a Monte Carlo simulation study. In addition, we provide freely available functions via the MBESS package in R to implement the methods discussed. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
