Interactions among motivation, cognitive functioning, and affect shape much of the diversity in human behavior. This study aims to synthesize the literature on these interactions through a narrative review and highlights how a particular class of motivations leads to paradoxical effects. The literature review was conducted by following a rigorous search protocol to identify and filter the research on the topic. A synthesis of the pertinent research suggests that motivation, cognitive functioning, and affect interact cyclically to give rise to behavioral diversity. More importantly, affective and motivational influences lead to flexibility in cognitive functioning. This flexibility in information search and processing gives rise to paradoxical effects in the case of a class of motivations called, desires. Regulation of affect helps tone down these paradoxical effects. To conclude, few implications to theory and practice are discussed. © 2019, Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management.

Evaluating ERP Implementations: The Case for a Lifecycle-based Interpretive Approach

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to employ an integrated technology acceptance model–theory of planned behavior framework intertwined with online risk, e-distrust and product involvement to augment an understanding on consumers’ webrooming behavior. Design/methodology/approach: A mix of convenience and selective sampling was used for data collection. A total of 14 propositions were put forth, which were tested using the structural equation modeling method. Findings: The results of the study revealed that apart from perceived ease of searching online and overall usefulness of the webrooming sequence, perceived search benefits online and purchase benefits offline significantly determined consumers’ webrooming behavior. The results of the study also indicate that webrooming helps consumers avoid the feeling of post-purchase regret of making sub-optimal product choices offline. Online risk perceptions and e-distrust also play a notable role in inhibiting consumers’ from making online purchases, and as a consequence encourage webrooming behavior. The moderating influence of product involvement was observed between consumers’ intentions toward webrooming and webrooming behavior. Research limitations/implications: The research conducted provides rich insights into understanding the rising webrooming phenomenon. However, more exhaustive studies are needed to arrive at definitive findings concerning the webrooming phenomenon. Practical implications: The findings of the study can be utilized by the online retailers for formulating strategies to counter webrooming behavior. Originality/value: The paper is amongst the first few studies which contribute toward enhancing the understanding on webrooming behavior, an emerging issue in the current retailing environment. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Lubricating oil degradation modeling and prognostics using Wiener Process

This study examines the growth stories of two emerging giants of global East-India and China for the time period 1980-2017. Using regression models, our results show that FDI has no formidable impact upon the economic growth. Similarly, we find no remarkable significant impact of remittances upon economic growth for both economies. Human capital in India is found to have the better substantial impact upon economic growth compared to China, which infers that regime plays a key role in influencing growth mechanism. More importantly, the present study shows that rather than delving exclusively to foreign capital inflows, improving domestic investment cycle and rationing the domestic industry structure fuel growth and ensure competition in long run. Besides investment factors, other economic factors like gross-savings and inflation also swing economic growth in a noticeable way over the years. For both economies, our empirical results reveal that increase in inflation for a long time period cause significant negative growth dispersions. Like other traditional growth engines, our empirical results show that improvements in transport infrastructure like Air and rail transports exert positive impacts upon the growth. Hence, the study suggests much emphasis on the regional development, inequality, better macroeconomic policies to lift developing economies out of the peril of unsustained economic development in recent years. © BEIESP.

Factors behind growth for india and China-a access for the period of 1981-2017

Many introductory research methods textbooks still divide the research paradigms into two broad approaches-positivist/quantitative/deductive and interpretive/qualitative/inductive. However, this bifurcation of research orientation does not do justice to the philosophical and methodological pluralism present within business research. This paper offers a third way by reflecting on a retroductive analysis in a critical realist case study. The philosophy of critical realism employs retroductive analysis to search for mechanisms underpinning the empirically observed events. Mechanism-based theorising is a suggested way in the business research to develop middle-range 'sometimes true' theories. This paper demonstrates the process of retroduction for the identification of mechanisms through an illustration of the data collection, coding and analysis process in a multilevel critical realist case study. In the process, it outlines the challenges faced and offers suggestions to overcome those challenges. This paper does not claim to provide a set of best practices for multilevel retroductive analysis. However, it is hoped that it sensitises business researchers to explore the critical realist perspective and to employ retroduction for mechanism-based theorising. © ACPIL.

The search for mechanisms in business research: Reflections on retroductive analysis in a multilevel critical realist case study

Behavior change interventions attempt to change norm perceptions to bring about desirable effects. We examine whether psychological distance implicit to the information about a norm has any influence on how people perceive such information. We embed the variations on the dimensions of psychological distance (i.e., temporal, spatial, social, and hypothetical), each operating at two levels (psychologically closer vs. psychologically distant) in a statement conveying the norm. Each participant reads a version of the statement to indicate the preference to conform to the norm. In addition, the participants weigh 6 criteria on their relative importance to the indicated preference. We also assess participants' value orientation to measure whether in general they adopt individualistic versus collectivistic orientation. Psychological distance did not account for the observed variation in the preference to conform to the norm. However, weighting exercise reveals that people evaluate information regarding a norm or the behavior in question. Moreover, weights attached to behavior show a negative association with the preference to conform implying that the norm is not in good taste with their personal values and prevailing norms. The disposition toward collectivism strengthens such reasoning. To conclude, we suggest future research directions. © 2019 American Psychological Association.

Lubrication Oil Degradation Trajectories: Prognosis with ARIMA and Bayesian Models

Correlation coefficients are effect size measures that are widely used in psychology and related disciplines for quantifying the degree of relationship of two variables, where different correlation coefficients are used to describe different types of relationships for different types of data. We develop methods for constructing a sufficiently narrow confidence interval for 3 different population correlation coefficients with a specified upper bound on the confidence interval width (e.g., .10 units) at a specified level of confidence (e.g., 95%). In particular, we develop methods for Pearson's r, Kendall's tau, and Spearman's rho. Our methods solve an important problem because existing methods of study design for correlation coefficients generally require the use of supposed but typically unknowable population values as input parameters. We develop sequential estimation procedures and prove their desirable properties in order to obtain sufficiently narrow confidence interval for population correlation coefficients without using supposed values of population parameters, doing so in a distribution-free environment. In sequential estimation procedures, supposed values of population parameters for purposes of sample size planning are not needed, but instead stopping rules are developed and once satisfied, they provide a rule-based stop to the sampling of additional units. In particular, data in sequential estimation procedures are collected in stages, whereby at each stage the estimated population values are updated and the stopping rule evaluated. Correspondingly, the final sample size required to obtain a sufficiently narrow confidence interval is not known a priori, but is based on the outcome of the study. Additionally, we extend our methods to the squared multiple correlation coefficient under the assumption of multivariate normality. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our sequential procedure using a Monte Carlo simulation study. His love for travelling exposed him to various geographies, demographics and cultures and as a result, he was always ahead of the market curve in predicting the market dynamics. Onlymobiles. com was competing with hundreds of online as well offline retailers in the mobile phones and accessories market. Onlymobiles.com, were selling mobile and smart phones of smaller ticket size and most of the orders were purchased with CoD (cash on delivery) option. While, CoD was essential for sustainable and profitable growth, it posed challenges for the business. In order to compete with the established players and, at the same time, be profitable, Desai examined the options that would help Onlymobiles.com create its niche in the market. He weighed between a change in the retail strategy or a change in the service strategy for Onlymobiles.com. © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Co.
