In everyday life, we understand actual physical reality through our sense perception. In the recent years, technology has added many new elements to the perception of reality around us. In this regard, many terms are in use—virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and more recently, extended reality (XR). In general, these are computer-assisted environments that attempt to recreate reality for the users using cameras, sensors, display and projection devices. However, there are some subtle different among these terms depending upon their relationship with actual physical reality. Recreating Reality: Classification of Computer-Assisted Environments

Purpose: The paper investigates shoppers' justification behind the showrooming behaviour and proposes an integrated SOR-MOA framework and a SAP-LAP model for a better understanding of the showrooming phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopts a qualitative approach. A narrative-based examination followed by an inductive thematic analysis was employed to discover consumers' reasoning behind showrooming. Findings: The results of the study affirmed the distinction between situational and intentional showrooming conduct. Situational factors have been classified across two categories: store-related (mismanagement at the store, assortment issues) and sales-personal related factors (disrespectful, rude, poor response and dishonest behaviour of the sales staff). However, factors corresponding to intentional showrooming conduct have been characterized as motivational (perceived value, past experience and perceived relative advantage), opportunity (retailer's support and services, channel availability and consumer empowerment) and ability (consumer skills)-related factors in aggregation with the stimulus organism response ideology. In addition, the study also highlights the consequences associated with the showrooming conduct of the shoppers. Research limitations/implications: The findings of the study need further exploration and examination through the adoption of a quantitative approach on a large sample size. Practical implications: The findings of the study can be utilized by offline retailers for devising strategies to counter showrooming customers and retain them as buyers. Originality/value: The study emerges as the first piece of research to account for the ability and opportunity perspectives for better understanding of showrooming. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Drivers of showrooming behaviour: insights from integrated perspectives

IoT and Cloud Computing for Societal Good

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the relationship between global value chains (GVCs) and domestic value-added content (DVA) in a panel of 58 countries for the period 2005–2015. Design/methodology/approach: First, the authors quantify the refined measures of GVC linkages by using the Borin and Mancini (2019) decomposition technique. Second, the authors apply the feasible generalised least squares method to test the relationship between GVCs and DVA empirically. Findings: First, the authors find that GVC links are crucial to the enhancement of DVA. Second, a study at the sectoral level reveals that GVC links in the primary sector raise DVA whilst reducing DVA in the services sector. Third, the authors find that only upstream activities enhance value-added content. Fourth, the authors note the augmenting role played by national policies in mediating the gains associated with GVCs. Finally, the authors note that the outcomes associated with GVCs are consistent when the sample of countries is divided into groups based on income. Practical implications: The results lead us to urge policymakers to promote greater integration of business activities into GVCs to reap their benefits. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the research on the impact of GVCs on DVA by emphasising the significance of the types of GVC activities and policies that improve DVA. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Safety of Minors on Social Media Websites: Italian Parent Perceptions and Mitigation

Cloud computing has revolutionized the IT industry by allowing the supply of elastic computing tools on demand as pay-as-you-go services such as SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS (Beloglazov, Energy-efficient management of virtual machines in data centers for cloud computing. PhD thesis, 2013; Farahnakian et al., Energy and performance: management of virtual machines: provisioning, placement, and consolidation. 2016). Cloud computing has contributed to the reinventing of the way technology resources such as servers, storage, private networks, application platforms, and software services are procured and provisioned. A cloud consumer only requires an Internet connection to connect to a cloud service provider to use these services without placing undue pressure on the resources of their computer or mobile device. A medium-sized enterprise may outsource the demand for computing resources to the Cloud and escape high front-end costs that could be spent on private computational resources and thereby save costs that may arise from hardware and software maintenance and upgrades. A giant enterprise, meanwhile, can also create its own private cloud data center to satisfy the demand for computing services and enhance the process of resource management and provisioning. However, cloud computing infrastructure requires massive energy, sometimes even exceeding the energy requirements of a mid-size town. Towards Energy Efficient Cloud Computing: Research Directions and Methodological Approach

This teaching case discusses the aftermath of an implementation failure and resultant legitimacy crisis in a national blood bank service. The implementation of the new blood bank system was abandoned after significant loss of public money. This was followed by a review with the Auditor General and a subsequent debate in the public accounts committee of the national parliament. The case follows how the organisation repaired its legitimacy after the implementation failure and how it gained further legitimacy when planning a new implementation. This case helps the students in understanding diverse assessment of legitimacy, appreciating the contextual influences on legitimacy claims, and being able to analyse how legitimacy is managed by the organisation in its institutional context. © Association for Information Technology Trust 2021.

Regaining legitimacy after an information systems implementation failure: Case of a National Blood Bank Service

This research paper is a study on sustainable organisational performance through application and implementation regimen of lean manufacturing (LM). This work explores the impact of Product Innovation (PI) factors in LM implementation. For an effective LM mission, it is essential to focus on the pre-manufacturing phase which is the PI stage. The impact of LM on sustainable organisational performance, conceived as satisfaction of customer and that of internal objectives, can be realised if the issues are addressed at the PI stage. Based on literature survey, a structural framework is conceptualised, followed by design of the questionnaire, sampling, data collation and validation of the proposed model by an empirical research in the Indian manufacturing sector. The results of the structural model reveal that three out of four PI factors significantly affect LM implementation that has a positive impact on customer satisfaction and fulfilment of internal objectives, thus achieving sustainable organisational performance. Sustainable organisational performance through lean implementation regimen emanating from product innovation factors: a study in Indian context

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the nexus between financial integration and export diversification. Design/methodology/approach: The authors consider 96 economies spanning over the period 1995-2014. To provide broader insights, the authors categorize 96 economies into developed, developing, high and low diversified panels. Both volume and equity-based measures of financial integration are used. The generalized method of moments (GMM) method is used to analyze the link between financial integration and export diversification. Findings: The results derived from GMM indicate that financial integration is a vital factor of export diversification. Further, the findings reveal similar conclusions for developed, developing, high and low diversified panels. Research limitations/implications: The outcome of this study suggests that promoting the financial integration of markets by lowering the restrictions on capital inflows helps countries to lower the risk and diversify their exports. Originality/value: Though there exists enormous literature on export diversification, the nexus between financial integration and export diversification is limited. Does financial integration drive export diversification? Evidence from a cross-country analysis

This paper examines the current state of service quality research through various organizational theoretical perspectives and identifies potential research directions that can be explored to provide novel insights into the field. A systematic literature review approach is used to examine service quality literature from the perspective of agency theory, contingency theory, motivational theories, prospect theory, resource-based view, signaling theory, social network theory and transaction cost economics. This paper is the first attempt to review service quality literature from an organizational theory lens and can serve as a template study for future theory-building research to advance topics in other areas. © 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
