MEMS based Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) is widelyused as a sensor for biochemical, physical sensing or as a filter. Device architectures available presently require the use of an air cavity, a freestanding membrane or Bragg mirror reflector and are fabricated as distinct components. Proposed FBAR uses polymer (polyimide) as a support layer to achieve Acoustic wave confinement. When the polyimide thickness is larger than a critical value, tpolyimide, performance of the proposed FBAR is analogous to devices using other architectures. The support layer made of polyimide makes the underlying substrate of FBAR insensitive to the acoustic wave. Al/ZnO/Al/Polyimide/Si taken as a different layer of FBAR when tpolyimide is 9 μm, operates at 1.3931 GHz and has a Q-factor of 1.8∗1028. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.

Design of MEMS based Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonator

This letter presents an efficient and generic methodology for the estimation of power supply-induced jitter by the numerical method using a root-finding approach. The methodology is described in detail through an example of a voltage-mode driver circuit. There is a significant speed-up reported compared with the simulations by a commercial simulator. © 2017 IEEE.

An efficient estimation of power supply-induced jitter by Numerical method

An efficient methodology for minimizing core supply noise in Power Delivery Networks is presented. To reduce the power supply noise, an optimal decoupling network is designed by Simulated Annealing. The cumulative impedance of Power Delivery Network is reduced using lesser number of decoupling capacitors compared to placing decoupling capacitors intuitively. The supply noise is minimized according to the requirement of system specifications and the corresponding jitter reduction is reported. © 2017 IEEE.

Minimizing core supply noise in a power delivery network by optimization of decoupling capacitors using simulated annealing

We propose an alternate method to sense inertial rotation using semiconductor ring laser gyroscope (SRLG). We show that inertial rotation causes change in the magnitude of voltage across the terminals of semiconductor gain medium which can be measured externally to determine angular rotation velocity. The resonant oscillating frequency of the counter-traveling waves are not involved in the measurement which leads to elimination of lock-in in the gyro. The mathematical analysis and simulation results of the proposed method are also shown. © 2015 IEEE.

A novel method of rotation sensing by semiconductor ring laser gyroscope

The effects of phase-Amplitude interactions on the linearity of semiconductor ring laser gyro output is evaluated. Response of gyro output to the variations in several semiconductor gain medium parameters is studied with a view of performance enhancement through parameter optimization. © 2016 IEEE.

Analyzing phase-Amplitude coupling effects on the dynamics of semiconductor ring laser gyroscope

In this paper, a dual-band bandpass filter is proposed in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology. A single cavity that supports both TE101 and TE201 resonating modes is used for the design. The two passbands are created by the two modes. To improve the selectivity, one bypass coupling path is introduced which provides additional transmission zero. The procedures to control the passband center frequencies as well as their bandwidths are presented. A prototype narrowband bandpass filter with the center frequencies of two passbands as 10 GHz and 11 GHz is fabricated for space applications. The 3 dB fractional bandwidths are 3% and 1.6%, respectively. The measured insertion losses at the passband center frequencies are 1.4 dB and 2.6 dB, respectively. © 2016 IEEE.

Dual-band substrate integrated waveguide filter with independently controllable bandwidth

In this paper, we propose and model an enhanced IEEE 802.15.4 MAC for sensor nodes operating in multi-hop scenarios. Existing IEEE 802.15.4 MAC, when adapted to multi-hop networks may not perform efficiently due to lack of knowledge about the instantaneous state of local gateway. We therefore ameliorate the channel access mechanism by introducing a new Active-Tx state, which aids in identifying the state of local gateway along with traditionally existing Sleep and CSMA/CA states. A 3D Markov chain based model is developed for analysing the performance of proposed MAC framework under different configurations of network. Upon considering reliability, energy and delay as the key performance metrics the analysis shows that the model captures behaviour of the sensor node most accurately with 95% confidence level. In addition performance is also analysed using real time deployment and found to be in good accordance with analytical and simulation outcomes. © 2016 IEEE.

Performance analysis of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer: Prospect for multi-hop networks

Volatile organic compounds can cause severe health problems if inhaled in concentrations more than the permissible threshold. This paper presents the experimental sensing study of three different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) viz. ethanol (C2H5OH), propanol (C3H7OH) and benzene (C6H6). Sensing experiments are performed on undoped, reactively sputtered films (ZnO/SnO2) integrated with micro-heater and interdigitated electrodes. Process integration is carried out using standard MEMS unit processes. A comprehensive experimental study is carried out to analyze the operating temperature and sensing behavior of the above mentioned volatile organic compounds on SnO2 and ZnO sensing films. The operating temperature is optimized for maximum sensitivity. Fast response (&lt;40 s) and recovery times (&lt;55 s) are achieved and sensor response for VOCs (C2H5OH, C3H7OH and C6H6) concentrations as low as 25 PPM is recorded. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Pristine ZnO and SnO2 films for sensing of volatile organic compounds

This paper presents a technique to recognize the power quality (PQ) disturbances associated with solar energy penetration in distribution network. The voltage signal is analysed with the help of Stockwell's transform (S-transform) then its features are utilized to recognize power quality events with the help of Fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM). The operations considered for PQ assessment include grid synchronization and outage of solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The PQ events associated with sudden change in solar insolation have also been investigated. The proposed study is carried out using a standard IEEE-13 bus test system modified by incorporating the solar PV system. The effect of increase in solar energy penetration in terms of power quality assessment has also been investigated with solar PV systems of capacities 100kW, 500kW and 1MW using the proposed power quality index, maximum deviations in frequency and total harmonics distortions of voltage and current. The study has been carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and simulation results are compared with the real time results obtained using real time digital simulator (RTDS) for validating the effectiveness of proposed study. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Power quality recognition in distribution system with solar energy penetration using S-transform and Fuzzy C-means clustering

Grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly attracting the attention of industry and academia mainly motivated by potential to provide an alternative to the conventional fossil fuel generation. This helps to meet out the increasing energy demands and to limit the pollution of environment caused by fossil emissions. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the grid-connected solar PV systems. The intention of this review is to provide a wide spectrum on architecture of grid-connected solar PV system and its constituent components such as solar cell, PV array, maximum power point tracking, filters, DC-DC converters, single-phase inverters, and three-phase inverters to the researchers, designers, and engineers working on solar energy and its integration into the utility grid. Brief overview of control techniques for the single and three-phase inverters has also been presented. More than 100 research publications on the topologies, configurations, and control techniques of grid-connected solar PV systems and their major constituent components have been thoroughly reviewed and classified for quick reference. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
