Dynamic monitoring of power systems is crucial for improved situational awareness and decision-making. This article examines the experience of the Indian grid, using a wide-area monitoring system and advanced analytics, on event detection, classification, and localization. It highlights the need for integrated, multi-module solutions with advanced signal processing and analytical methods for effective monitoring in the changing grid scenario with large-scale inverter-based renewable resources.

Wide-Area-Measurement-System-Based Event Analytics in the Power System: A Data-Driven Framework for Disturbance Characterization and Source Localization in the Indian Grid

With the exponential growth in communication and multimedia devices, educators around the globe have been experimenting and innovating newer ways to engage students in a more immersive and enjoyable way. Games, especially serious games or educational games, have had a proven effect on marketing, sales, and behavioral changes, and have now increasingly gained momentum in K12 and higher education primarily to enhance learner engagement and motivation. This paper presents a work-in-progress towards developing serious games as supplemental material in teaching few topics such as Zener Diode and Bipolar Junction Transistor for freshmen engineering students. Two storyboards of game-based learning are presented in this paper along with the design strategy and target core motivational drives. The development of the first levels of the proposed games is nearing completion and theoretical validation on Octalysis framework is presented in the paper. Student reception and feedback is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

On increasing the penetration of DGUs in a predominantly resistive network, new low damping modes are generated hampering oscillatory stability.On increasing the virtual inertia injections in a predominantly resistive network, few oscillatory modes tend to shift towards right half of s-plane, thus hampering small signal stability.The importance of coherency based network control and partitioning in active distribution network two scenarios are considered in the work. In first scenario, voltage coherency based emergency control of distribution system and in second scenario, cases are discussed.In this work, the fundamental factors affecting the angle and voltage coherency criteria of active distribution system are defined for predominantly inductive and resistive networks which results duality in coherency.

Integrating smart devices and communication technologies with the power grid has exposed cyber-physical system to vulnerabilities, posing significant threats to infrastructure and the economy. Evaluating and strengthening the security of cyber-physical systems is crucial for the advancement of the future electricity grid. Attackers target state estimation (SE) as it plays a significant role in the normal operation of power systems. Hence, any manipulation in measurement sets of state estimation can disrupt the stable operation of the power system. This paper discusses topology attacks, where falsification in the network's structure (adding or removing components) can disrupt functionality on various application related to SE. This research aims to execute a topology attack while bypassing techniques for detecting bad measurements, such as normal residual test. Initially, it implements a topology attack for N-1 contingency using betweenness centrality to identify and prioritize the most critical nodes within the power grid network. Subsequently, manipulation within the SE measurement set reveals critical lines. This paper investigates the impact of Coordinated cyber-physical attacks on power systems adhering to the N-1 security criterion, specifically analyzing their effects on optimal power flow (OPF). This paper confirms the effectiveness of these attacks by conducting thorough simulations across various power system configurations.

Impact Assessment of Topology Attack on Power System Using Graph Theory

In the modern power industry, Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) operations are crucial for optimizing the cost and efficiency of power generation across diverse energy sources. This paper presents the implementation of an ELD model using cloud services focusing on the development of an iterative algorithmic solution to address the limitations of local grid systems. The ELD model considers the factors like transmission losses and generator limits. Implementing the ELD model on a cloud platform, scalability, flexibility, and real-time data processing are enhanced, leading to improved operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Comparative analysis between local and cloud-based implementations highlights the superior performance in adapting to load fluctuations and dynamic resource demands. Cloud not only streamlines ELD operations but also provide a single platform for facilitating better management and integration across multiple power plants at various locations. Future directions include exploring matching learning techniques for load prediction and assessing the cloud-based implementation in various regulatory environments.

Streamlining Economic Load Dispatch Operations Through Cloud Solutions

Modern power system networks integrate communication systems to ensure efficient and reliable function of the power grids. The distance relay is an essential component of the power transmission system. With the rapid progress of communication technologies, distance relay systems are susceptible to cyber- attacks. This article presents a machine learning-based cyber attack detection model for distance relay. The model is capable of detecting FDI (False Data Injection) and FSI (False setting Injection) attacks. The proposed methodology begins by processing the current and voltage data. It then employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to calculate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This data is subsequently used to train and test the Random Forest ensemble algorithm for classifying faults, normal conditions, and attacks, and to generate labels. The proposed method’s efficacy is evaluated utilising the IEEE-9 bus system.

A Novel Approach for Enhancing Cyber Resiliency in Distance Relay using PCA and Random Forest

The substation automation through IEC-61850 requires process command transfer from intelligent electronic devices to field devices across the station data bus. The command transfer in the publisher/subscriber model restricts encryption and encapsulation making it susceptible to manipulation attacks. This work enhances the confidentiality and integrity of IEC-61580 Generic Object-Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) message transmission. Confidentiality is ensured by using the ChaCha20 encryption standard. Integrity is ensured by a novel method of comparing the combined hash of cipher Text and Key at the Publisher and Subscriber end. Further simulations are performed in a virtual environment in a MAC machine to validate the time and accuracy requirement.

Enhancing the Security of IEC-61850 GOOSE Messages During Transmission

Blended learning using flipped classroom has emerged as a remarkable model for bridging the digital divide between geographically- and socio-economically–disadvantaged students during the Covid pandemic, especially for those situated in remote locations with limited internet connectivity. This paper presents an investigation of a blended learning framework using flipped teaching through interactive video lectures for an Introduction to Electrical Engineering course held in online mode for a first-year batch of engineering students. The analysis includes observations from two sets of students who took this course over the last two academic years, referred to as control and treatment groups, respectively. The paper also reports a simple preliminary framework for utilizing the analytics available from interactive video assignments for identifying students with poor engagement and understanding so that the instructor may adopt timely measures and interventions to address the need of all students. The success of the video assignments are validated both qualitatively (through student feedback and performance) and quantitatively (using t-test). Results show that the flipped teaching model has both empirical approval and support of a majority of students, especially in the distance learning mode. Statistical analysis shows a significant difference in the performance of students with and without video-based flipped teaching in online mode.
