In this article, recent results employing scanning tunneling microscopy-based techniques for the generation of nanometer-scale patterns on hydrofluoric acid treated silicon(100) and YBa2Cu3O x superconducting thin films are presented. Furthermore, we were able to extract silicon (Si) atoms from Si(100)-1×1 surfaces, thereby producing silicon vacancies in the surface. These results thus demonstrate a possible approach for the construction of an atomic scale data memory as well as fabrication of artificial nucleation sites. The emission mechanism is believed to be field assisted evaporation due to the close proximity of the surface and the probe of the microscope. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Pattern generation on silicon surfaces and YBa2Cu 3Ox thin films by a scanning tunneling microscope

This paper presents a method of designing the output feedback gain which place the closed-loop poles of a given interval system inside some region. The output feedback gain can be determined in a very simple way. A numerical example illustrates the proposed procedure.

Robust pole assignment for interval systems using output feedback

This note presents a method for the reduction of the order of interval system. The denominator of the reduced model is obtained by a direct truncation of the Routh table of the interval system. The numerator is obtained by matching the coefficients of power series expansions of the interval system and its reduced model. A numerical example illustrates the proposed procedure. © 1994 IEEE

Technical Notes And Correspondence Routh-Pade Approximation For Interval Systems

We deal with the design of robust controllers for linear time invariant uncertain system exhibiting two time scale properties for the entire range of parameter variations. The uncertain system has been decomposed into slow and fast uncertain subsystem. The stabilizing controllers for the lower order subsystems are designed and a composite controller is obtained from them. This composite controller is shown to stabilize the higher order uncertain system, if applied to it. A numerical example illustrates the procedure.

On the design of stabilizing control for structured uncertain singularly perturbed systems

A thermodynamic criterion has been applied to determine the reliability of contact metals such as silver, aluminium, gold, chromium, and titanium on bismuth and yttrium based high temperature superconductors (HTSC). The chemical stability is presumed for positive heat of reactions, i.e., ΔHreaction &gt; 0, when a metal reacts with all the possible oxides present in the superconducting material. Based on these calculations, metals for reliable contacts to HTSCs are proposed. © 1994.

Reliability of high temperature superconductor metal contacts

X-ray photoemission measurements were performed on Au deposited on a Bi(2212) single crystal after progressively sputtering it with Ar ions. This was to see whether changes such as diffusion of Au, segregation of a particular element or clustering effects take place at the interface. Spectra of different core levels reveal no elemental diffusion at the interface and an absence of Au interaction with the crystal at room temperature.

A photoemission study of the influence of sputtering on the Au-Bi(2212) interface

Variable structure control (VSC) with sliding mode is a special type of control technique that is capable of making a control system very robust with respect to system parameter variations and external disturbances. Because of the robustness property, easy and decoupled design technique VSC finds important applications in control of flexible manipulators. Here, VSC application to a flexible one-link manipulator and a two link manipulator with last link flexible are considered. Simulation results are obtained to evaluate the performance of controllers. Simulation results show that variable structure control with sliding mode can provide effective control of flexible manipulators.

To prove Theorem 3.1-i) and Theorem 3.1-ii) in the above paper1 are equivalent, the authors have assumed without loss of generality that the gain matrix has the form K = MEi. The paper reports a new approach, based on low-pressure on-axis sputter deposition followed by high-pressure plasma treatment (OPT) for the preparation of in situ superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) films with a high-Tc phase. It was observed that OPT is essential to lower the room-temperature resistance and to achieve superconduction in the films.

A new approach for the preparation of in situ superconducting BSCCO films

Design of robust state feedback control law for SISO interval system is discussed in this paper. Heinen's condition has been used to design state feedback control law for general SISO interval system. The minimization of some function subject to inequalities have been converted into linear-programming problem in standard form and then, the linear programming problem is solved to obtain the state feedback gain. The idea of the above design method is illustrated by numerical examples.
