This paper proposes a design of frequency shaped sliding mode controller using fast output sampling technique. A compensator is introduced in the sliding surface to attenuate the frequency component of the sliding mode dynamics so that the unmodelled dynamics are minimally excited. The fast output sampling technique is used to estimate the states of the system where the output is measured at a faster rate than the input updates. The control law performance is validated by the simulation.

Multirate output feedback based frequency shaped sliding mode control

The problem of designing robust controller for discrete two-time-scale interval systems, conveniently represented using interval matrix notion, is considered. The original full order two-time-scale interval system is decomposed into slow and fast subsystems using interval arithmetic. The controllers designed independently to stabilize these two subsystems are combined to get a composite controller which also stabilizes the original full order two-time-scale interval system. It is shown that a state and output feedback control law designed to stabilize the slow interval subsystem stabilizes the original full order system provided the fast interval subsystem is asymptotically stable. The proposed design procedure is illustrated using numerical examples for establishing the efficacy of the proposed method. © Springer 2006.

Robust control for two-time-scale discrete interval systems

In this paper, the modelling and design of a multivariable controller for a smart thick composite cantilever beam with embedded shear sensors and actuators is investigated. The first 3 dominant vibratory modes are retained in the modelling of the composite beam. The beam is divided into 8 finite elements and shear piezoelectric patches are embedded into the master structure. These shear piezoelectric patches serve as sensors and actuators at 2 finite element locations to obtain a multivariable system with 2 inputs and 2 outputs. The beam is subjected to an external disturbance at the free end. The vibrations are damped out quickly when the POF controller is put in a feedback loop with the beam. The effect of placing the non-collocated sensor / actuator pairs at 2 finite element locations in between the two beam layers is observed and the conclusions are drawn. The closed loop responses with the output feedback gain were found to be satisfactory. Shear and axial displacements, neglected in the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory are considered in this research to produce an accurate beam model. © 2006 UK Simulation Society. Design of multivariable pof controller for smart composite beam using embedded shear sensors and actuators

The paper presents a novel method to design a spatial control for a large PHWR based on multirate output feedback robust sliding mode control. The proposed method does not require state information of the system, for feedback purposes. The proposed control technique is easy to obtain and to implement. Simulation has been carried out using the nodal core model of PHWR to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Spatial control of a large PHWR by multirate output feedback based sliding mode control

In this paper, an improvement in Pade approximation is proposed to reduce the order of a linear-time-invariant higher order stable system, using the Hermite-Biehler stability theorem. Two free parameters are introduced in the denominator polynomial of the reduced model. It will be shown that for any positive values of these two parameters, the resulting reduced model will be stable. The numerator polynomial and these two parameters are obtained by matching time moments. In this proposed algorithm, the reduced model matches (r + 2) time moments exactly while (r + 3)-th moment is matched approximately. The proposed method is illustrated by two numerical examples.

The paper presents the design of sliding mode control for the higher order system via reduced order model. It has been shown that a sliding mode control designed for the reduced order model gives similar performance for the higher order system. The method has been illustrated by numerical examples.

Fabrication of high Ge content SiGe layer on Si by Ge condensation technique

This paper deals with the application of wavelet transforms for the detection, classification and location of faults on Transmission lines. A Global Positioning System synchronizing clock is used to sample three phase voltage and current signals at both the ends of the transmission line over a moving window length of half cycle. The current signals are analyzed with Bior2.2 wavelet to obtain detail coefficients of single decompositions. Fault Indices are calculated based on the sum of local and remote end detail coefficients, and compared with threshold values to detect and classify the faults. For estimation of fault location Feed Forward Artificial Neural Networks are employed, which make use of third level approximate decompositions of the voltages and currents of local end obtained with Bior4.4 wavelet. Two types of neural networks are proposed, one for locating Phase Faults and the other for Ground Faults. The proposed algorithm is tested for different locations and types of faults as well as for various incidence angles and fault impedances. The algorithm is proved to be efficient and effective in detecting, classifying and locating faults. © 2006 IEEE.

Wavelet based fault detection, classification and location in transmission lines

This paper presents a method for achieving quasi-sliding mode for uncertain systems using a fast output sampling control strategy that avoids switching of control and, hence, avoids chattering. This method does not need the system states for feedback as it makes use of only the output samples for designing the controller. Thus, this methodology is more practical and easy to implement. The design technique is illustrated through two numerical examples. © 2006 IEEE.
