Technological interventions are adopted in emerging economies to enable sustainable development and empower marginalized communities at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP). Emerging economies are becoming significant contributors in BoP development with the active initiatives from academia-driven organizations engaging in rural development. However, the technological development practice is fragmented and requires unified technology management practices to analyze salient features that lead to a sustainable rural transformation. This study adopts a case-study methodology and obtains primary and secondary data from two distinctive centers of an academia-born organization. The findings enfold three intrinsic characteristics of the technology development process targeted for the BoP sector: the emergence of demand-driven technology, inclusive innovation practices leading towards self-reliance and trends of sustainable green technology. The formative contribution of this research enriches the management of technologies at BoP by connecting the developer's perspective for innovation practice inclined towards knowledge sharing, inclusiveness, empowerment and sustainable development, thus creating a roadmap for effective policy development focusing on the sustainability of BoP technologies in emerging economies. © 2022 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Role of Academic Initiatives for Technology Management at the Base of the Pyramid: Empirical Evidence from India

This research paper is a study on sustainable organisational performance through application and implementation regimen of lean manufacturing (LM). This work explores the impact of Product Innovation (PI) factors in LM implementation. For an effective LM mission, it is essential to focus on the pre-manufacturing phase which is the PI stage. The impact of LM on sustainable organisational performance, conceived as satisfaction of customer and that of internal objectives, can be realised if the issues are addressed at the PI stage. Based on literature survey, a structural framework is conceptualised, followed by design of the questionnaire, sampling, data collation and validation of the proposed model by an empirical research in the Indian manufacturing sector. The results of the structural model reveal that three out of four PI factors significantly affect LM implementation that has a positive impact on customer satisfaction and fulfilment of internal objectives, thus achieving sustainable organisational performance. Sustainable organisational performance through lean implementation regimen emanating from product innovation factors: a study in Indian context

Developing countries require organizations engaged in making Appropriate technologies which address the development of rural community. The Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) located inside Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is one of the pioneer organizations which synergies the collaborative efforts of government, academia and Non-Government Organizations(NGOs) for research, development and dissemination of appropriate technologies in India. It is essential to understand the organizational aspects of RuTAG for better technology management. The novelty of this study lies in exploring the organizational aspects of RuTAG for technology development and management using a systems theory approach. Data presented in this study is based on primary and secondary sources. The different organizational elements of RuTAG has been demonstrated and explained for deeper understanding. A Systems Theory Based Framework for Technology Management in an Indian Academia Based Organization: Case Study on RuTAG IIT Delhi

This paper presents an engineering informatics based approach to identify and assimilate effective and widely used parameters which are considered in literature in formulating synchronizer models. A methodology is proposed here to determine the optimal values of the selected parameters for improving the gear synchronization time. The synchronization mechanism is a major component of the transmission system that aids to a smooth gear shifting. Recent trends in gear synchronization efficiency improvement reveals that there is a challenge in improving the synchronizer mechanism for achieving quick and energy efficient transmission. A simulation study, formulated as a block model, for computation has been carried out in a reliable software environment like MATLAB with input parameters namely, the moment of inertia of engine, transmission input inertia, cone angle and coefficient of friction of the sleeve throughout. Lower synchronization time is desirable and hence, it has been considered here as the output parameter in the simulation modelling for computation with respect to the input parameters. A parametric optimization utilizing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based data, obtained from the computational model and data analysis, has been conducted to determine the optimal parameter values for realizing robust design with minimization of synchronization time as objective function. Furthermore, the interactions of the individual input parameters with the output parameter namely, synchronization time has also been observed. Such observations help in understanding the effectiveness of the parameters associated with synchronizer design to improve the product quality for synchronizer manufacturing. © 2018, Curran Associates Inc.
