With the application of the WRSIS (wetland-reservior-subirrigation system) concept in the Midwest USA and recently in China, an improved design and evaluation approach is needed. An experimental WRSIS site established in Guilin, China, consists of a wetland constructed within an existing paddy scheme. In this paper, we present a simulation analysis approach on the hydraulics of the Guilin constructed basin design, and alternatives to the original design focused on basin shape, flow barriers within the basin, vegetation density and distribution, etc. A SST k-ω model is applied to simulate the flow hydraulics within the constructed basin. Variables influencing hydraulic characteristics have been used to predict flow characteristics within the basin, with particular interest in inlet and outlet conditions, flow barrier presence and placement, and vegetation density and distribution. Flow analysis results are further analyzed using a multi-parameter probabilistic model, which helps us infer individual correlations existing between the variables. Modeling results have led to proposed changes in constructed wetland basin designs, based on alternative placement of flow barriers, vegetative resistance, and other design parameters influencing the overall mass flow rate. This approach has been developed to serve as research, engineering design and evaluation methodologies.

Simulation analysis of flow hydraulics in agricultural constructed wetlands

Water flow through point-of-use porous ceramic water treatment filters have been theoretically analyzed in this technical paper. Filters tested were manufactured by combining low cost materials namely, clay and sawdust. Three filters with distinct volume fractions of clay to sawdust (75:25, 65:35 and 50:50) were tested. Sintered clay filters casted in frustum shapes were structurally characterized using mercury intrusion porosimetry. A linear increase in porosity with volume fraction of sawdust was observed. Flow experiments were carried out at constant room temperature and pressure. Potable tap water was used in these studies. Flows through filters occurring with drop in the head of water under gravity were statistically analyzed. Discharges through the filters were predicted with respect to independent variables of time for cumulative discharge and volume fraction of sawdust used for manufacturing the filters. The experimental data analysis predicts a multiplicative influence of time and volume fraction of sawdust respectively, on discharge from the filters. The results demonstrate a new theoretical approach for prediction of flow in similar types of heterogeneous porous media as discussed in this technical paper. © 2009 Tech Science Press.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of water flow through porous ceramic clay compositewater filter

Rice-Wheat Consortium has been promoting resource conserving technologies in the Indo-Gangetic Plains(IGP) for past several years for timely planting of crops using simple vertical shocker type Zero-till Ferti-seed drills. Many farmers have purchased these zero-till drills in the south west region of the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Zero-till planting was introduced to advance the planting of crops to improve productivity, particularly in the winter season. Timely planting of wheat is known to improve crop productivity in the range of 40-50Kg/day/ha, besides significant saving in labor, fuel and water. RWC recently introduced a new second generation multi-crop planter zero till prototype to replace the traditional zero- till design. In order to further enhance the benefits of resource conserving technologies (RCTs), a 'head' specific micro-turbo pump was indigenously developed to save on untapped free surface flow power and economize on fuel green house emissions and energy. In field evaluation trials, the micro-turbo pump was found useful for the Canal- irrigated areas. The major feature of the 'head' specific micro-turbo pump is its robust and reliable design. The turbo-pump prototype can be easily manufactured locally to cater to pumping and for use in several other farm product processing operations. Water pumping from the tail race of the pump location was adapted keeping in mind, also the water table development at the larger radius from the location of surface flow replenishing water tables stressed by bore well and other water suction devices located at a higher head compared to flowing surface water. The whole system comprising the RCT and the turbo- pump installation were experimented and critically analyzed for the time span from 2003-2009. It is concluded that the head' specific micro-turbo pump is synergetic to RCTs and the newly designed pump can be used elsewhere in canal irrigated areas.

Experimentation of new resource conserving technology in synergy with micro-turbo-based canal irrigation system

A novel physical chemical filtration process in a tundish for removal of inclusion particles from molten steel is proposed and analyzed. The considered inclusion particles are mainly composed of the minerals alumina (Al2O3) and spinel (MgAl2O4), which have an affinity to adhere (on contact) to an inclusion trap. An industrial tundish is considered and modified with a zigzag channel block insert installed across the molten steel flow so that when the molten steel flows through the zigzag channels, the inclusion particles are driven into contact with the channel surfaces by increased recirculation and turbulence. The inclusions will bond with the surfaces and be removed from the molten steel. The flow behavior in a fully three-dimensional model of such a tundish, with and without the incorporation of the zigzag channels, is then modeled and dynamically simulated. The flow patterns and particle trajectories are then computed and critically analyzed leading to the conclusion that the proposed filtering system is practically feasible.
