Background: Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disease of clinical importance that occurs commonly in old age and in various disease sub-categories. Widening the scope of knowledge of the genetics of muscle mass and strength is important because it may allow to identify patients with an increased risk to develop a specific musculoskeletal disease or condition such as sarcopenia based on genetic markers. Methods: We used bioinformatics tools to identify gene loci responsible for regulating muscle strength and lean mass, which can then be a target for downstream lab experimentation validation. Single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with various disease traits of muscles and specific genes were chosen according to their muscle phenotype association p-value, as traditionally done in Genome Wide Association Studies, GWAS. We've developed and applied a combination of expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) and GWAS summary information, to prioritize causative SNP and point out the unique genes associated in the tissues of interest (muscle). Results: We found NUDT3 and KLF5 for lean mass and HLA-DQB1-AS1 for hand grip strength as candidate genes to target for these phenotypes. The associated regulatory SNPs are rs464553, rs1028883 and rs3129753 respectively. Conclusion: Transcriptome Wide Association Studies, TWAS, approaches of combining GWAS and eQTL summary statistics proved helpful in statistically prioritizing genes and their associated SNPs for the disease phenotype of study, in this case, Sarcopenia. Potentially regulatory SNPs associated with these genes, and the genes further prioritized by a scoring system, can be then wet lab verified, depending on the phenotype it is hypothesized to affect. © 2020 The Author(s).

Disentangling the genetics of sarcopenia: Prioritization of NUDT3 and KLF5 as genes for lean mass &amp; HLA-DQB1-AS1 for hand grip strength with the associated enhancing SNPs &amp; a scoring system

In recent years, information security has gained attention in organizations across diverse businesses and sectors. Primary reasons of this can be the new and innovative ways of information handling (during generation, processing, storage and distribution), and dependence of business processes on new and emerging IT/ICT mediums in organizations to carry out daily business activities. This has made organizations agile in terms of functioning and, at the same time, has posed new challenges. In this direction, the present study aims to explore and examine information security management (ISM) practices of two IT development and services organizations in India. In case study design, the study adopts qualitative research route to understand the current ISM practices of the case organizations. The observations derived from semi-structured interviews are presented using descriptive analysis methodology. Further, SAP-LAP (Situation, Actor, Process—Learning, Action, Performance) method of inquiry is used to analyse the findings from case studies. Results highlight the importance of consistent top management support, organizational information security culture and a proper monitoring system for ISM effectiveness in organizations. Insights derived from the study can be helpful for managers and decision makers in managing organizational information security practices. © 2019 International Management Institute, New Delhi.

Information Security Management Practices: Case Studies from India

Across the globe, critical infrastructures constantly face the risk of cyber and/or other attacks from hostile and malicious entities as well as damage inflicted by natural disasters. This paper seeks to identify the critical infrastructure sectors of a country, namely India, and to explore the dependencies existing among them. The research draws on the extant literature as well as expert opinion and judgments to identify the critical infrastructure sectors. Following this, the interpretive structural modeling (ISM) technique is employed to discover the relationships and dependencies existing among the identified critical infrastructure sectors. Next, cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) analysis is used to categorize the critical infrastructure sectors into four sub-groups based on their driving power and dependence on other sectors. Policy implications for government entities and businesses in India are also discussed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Identifying critical infrastructure sectors and their dependencies: An Indian scenario

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to attempt to fill the need to identify critical information security issues at national level, both technical and social in the Indian context, and create a framework of these issues to provide interesting managerial insights about their hierarchy. Current literature advocates relevance of both technical and social issues in a potential framework to address national and organizational information security concerns. Such a framework can guide users in developing insight for strategy in the maize of important information security issues and their intricate interdependency. Design/methodology/approach – Delphi methodology is used to identify a set of topical issues with help from members of a cyber security group. These issues are further analyzed using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to impose order and direction to the complex relationships among them. Findings – The analysis using ISM creates a framework of these issues and provides interesting managerial insights about their hierarchy. These insights are used to recommend prioritized action for information security at national and organizational levels. Research limitations/implications – The highlight of this research is ingenious deployment of two idea engineering methods in developing interpretable structural model of 25 information security issues. This model provides valuable insights and can guide the policy formulation. This is the key contribution of this paper. It needs hardly any emphasis on the need for continuous search of all technical and social issues and formulating policies and programs using experts” judgment in a rigorous manner. Subsequent research may scale up to the global level for extension and validation by empanelling Delphi experts from nations belonging to different regions. Time-variant analysis can be attempted with the help of System Dynamics Modeling using causal-loop diagrams to account for the supportive and inhibiting influences of various issues. This approach has the potential to generate more realistic insights that can inform policy formulation. Practical implications – It brings about key information security issues connected with its various facets, viz. national/organizational level initiatives, supportive processes, capabilities and objectives. These issues, identified by Indian experts in the Indian context, offer a method that one could apply in other national contexts and see whether substantial differences occur, and how other experts prioritize these issues. The analysis of social issues along with technical issues using the ISM tool provides us insights that are considered applicable to a larger context than India. The policy and program formulations in other nations can benefit from the insights generated by this research. The fast-paced proliferation of technology and its resultant vulnerabilities have given birth to an underground economy of malware trading by criminals, terrorists and hostile nation states. Secure cyber space for legitimate use by the globalized world can only be achieved by international cooperation. Social implications – A “digital divide” in cyber defense cannot be afforded. As explained earlier, cyber security is a challenge for both developed and developing nations. Prioritization of resources in a sequence suggested by ISM analysis would help face the challenge of cyber security better. The methodology suggested in this paper would ensure adequate response to cyber threats and eliminate knee-jerk reaction. Originality/value – This research emphasizes identification of hierarchical relationship among the identified topical issues of information security rather than using them as a flat checklist. It helps us segregate the end objectives from root issues and highlights the necessity of addressing these root issues to achieve those objectives. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Analyses of issues of information security in Indian context

Purpose – Despite many technically sophisticated solutions, managing information security has remained a persistent challenge for organizations. Emerging IT/ICT media have posed new security challenges to business information and information assets. It is felt that technical solutions alone are not sufficient to address the information security challenge. It has been argued that organizations also need to consider the management aspects of information security. Consequently, literature, especially in the last decade, has witnessed various scholarly works in this direction. Therefore, a synthesis exercise is required to bring clarity on categorizing the issues of organizational information security management (ISM) to take the research forward. The purpose of this paper is to identify management factors that address organizational information security challenges. Design/methodology/approach – Using a mix method approach, the paper adopts the qualitative (keyword analysis and experts’ opinion) and quantitative (questionnaire survey) research routes. Exploratory factor analysis is conducted to find out the key factors of organizational ISM. Findings – The paper categorizes various organizational ISM functions into ten factors. Spanning across three levels (strategic, tactical and operational), these factors cover various management issues of organizational ISM. Originality/value – The paper takes the ISM literature forward by statistically validating the key management factors of organizational ISM. The study outcome should help to draw the attention of organizations toward the managerial challenges of organizational ISM. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Identifying factors of “organizational information security management”

The increasing dependence of businesses over information and the changing ways of information usage with modern IT/ICT tools and mediums, have created an unavoidable need of information security in organizations. Earlier, the technical measures were used to fulfill this need; however, it has been realized that technology alone is unable to address the challenges of information security management (ISM) in organizations. Management and behavioral aspects are pivotal to build an ISM system in organizations. This paper makes an attempt to understand and examine the current ISM practices of two large size, global IT and management services and consulting organizations, one from India and another from Germany. In a case design, the study adopts qualitative research route and semi-structured interviews were conducted across hierarchy in both the organizations. Observations from interviews are portrayed using descriptive analysis methodology. Further, to draw learning from the cases, SAPLAP method of inquiry was used to understand the present status of ISM practices in both the organizations. Information Security Management (ISM) practices: Lessons from select cases from India and Germany

The X1 open reading frame of the SARS virus encodes a potentially unique protein not found in other coronaviruses. Here we present results of bioinformatic analyses that predict the X1 protein to bind calcium. The regulation of calcium homeostasis and calcium-mediated signalling pathways in infected cells may affect cell fate and contribute to the unique pathogenesis of this virus.
