The IceCube Collaboration has recently announced the discovery of ultrahigh energy neutrino events. These neutrinos can be used to probe their production source, as well as leptonic mixing parameters. In this work, we have used the first IceCube data to constrain the leptonic CP violating phase δCP. For this, we have analyzed the data in the form of flux ratios. We find that the fit to δCP depends on the assumptions made on the production mechanism of these astrophyscial neutrinos. Consequently, we also use this data to impose constraints on the sources of the neutrinos. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Probing CP violation with the first three years of ultrahigh energy neutrinos from IceCube

A single barrier dielectric barrier discharge tube of quartz with multi-strip Titanium-Gold (Ti-Au) coatings have been developed and utilized for ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation production peaking at wavelength 308 nm. The observed radiation at this wavelength has been examined for the mixtures of the Xenon together with chlorine and air admixtures. The gas mixture composition, chlorine gas content, total gas pressure, and air pressure dependency of the UV intensity, has been analyzed. It is found that the larger concentration of Cl2 deteriorates the performance of the developed source and around 2% Cl2 in this source produced optimum results. Furthermore, an addition of air in the xenon and chlorine working gas environment leads to achieve same intensity of UV-B light but at lower working gas pressure where significant amount of gas is air. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Ultraviolet-B radiation enhancement in dielectric barrier discharge based xenon chloride exciplex source by air

As we bring tubulin protein molecules one by one into the vicinity, they self-assemble and entire event we capture live via quantum tunneling. We observe how these molecules form a linear chain and then chains self-assemble into 2D sheet, an essential for microtubule, -fundamental nano-tube in a cellular life form. Even without using GTP, or any chemical reaction, but applying particular ac signal using specially designed antenna around atomic sharp tip we could carry out the self-assembly, however, if there is no electromagnetic pumping, no self-assembly is observed. In order to verify this atomic scale observation, we have built an artificial cell-like environment with nano-scale engineering and repeated spontaneous growth of tubulin protein to its complex with and without electromagnetic signal. We used 64 combinations of plant, animal and fungi tubulins and several doping molecules used as drug, and repeatedly observed that the long reported common frequency region where protein folds mechanically and its structures vibrate electromagnetically. Under pumping, the growth process exhibits a unique organized behavior unprecedented otherwise. Thus, "common frequency point" is proposed as a tool to regulate protein complex related diseases in the future.

Live visualizations of single isolated tubulin protein self-assembly via tunneling current: Effect of electromagnetic pumping during spontaneous growth of microtubule

Existing nanoscale chemical delivery systems target diseased cells over long, sustained periods of time, typically through one-time, destructive triggering. Future directions lie in the development of fast and robust techniques capable of reproducing the pulsatile chemical activity of living organisms, thereby allowing us to mimic biofunctionality. Here, we demonstrate that by applying programmed femtosecond laser pulses to robust, nanoscale liposome structures containing dopamine, we achieve sub-second, controlled release of dopamine - a key neurotransmitter of the central nervous system - thereby replicating its release profile in the brain. The fast delivery system provides a powerful new interface with neural circuits, and to the larger range of biological functions that operate on this short timescale.

Mimicking subsecond neurotransmitter dynamics with femtosecond laser stimulated nanosystems

A right amount of disorder in the form of refractive index variation has been introduced to achieve transverse localization of light in 1D semi-infinite photonic lattices. Presence of longitudinally-invariant transverse disorder opens-up a new waveguiding mechanism. © OSA 2014.

Confinement of light in disordered photonic lattices: A new platform for waveguidance

We report a numerically designed highly nonlinear all-glass chalcogenide microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for the efficient generation of light around 6 μm through degenerate four-wave mixing by considering a continuous wave CO laser of 5-10 W power emitting at 5.6 μm as the pump. By tuning the pump wavelength, pump power, fiber dispersion and nonlinear properties, a narrow (N)- and/or broad (B)- band mid-IR all-fiber light source could be realized. Parametric amplification of more than 20 dB is achievable for the N-band source at 6.46 μm with a maximum power conversion efficiency (Cm) ∼ 33%, while a amplification ∼22 ± 2 dB is achievable for a B-band source over the wavelength range of 5-6.3 μm with a Cm &gt; 40%. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

Mid-IR fiber optic light source around 6 μ m through parametric wavelength translation

The role of a prominent photonic bandgap (PBG) in the phenomenon of transverse localization of light in a semi-infinite lossless waveguide lattice consisting of evanescently coupled disordered one-dimensional optical waveguides has been investigated numerically. The interplay between the underlying photonic bandgap due to inherent periodicity of the optical system and various levels of deliberately induced transverse disorder in its refractive index periodicity has been studied. We show that the PBG indeed plays an important role and that its simultaneous presence could catalyze realization of localized light even when the strength of disorder is not sufficiently strong to independently cause localization of light. An important outcome of this study revealed that the PBG could be gainfully exploited to tailor the spectral window for localization of light in potential applications such as lasing in a disordered optical lattice. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

Evolution of atomic structure of defects in graphene under focused ion beam irradiation

Compact stars having strong magnetic fields (magnetars) have been observationally determined to have surface magnetic fields of order of 10 14-1015 G, the implied internal field strength being several orders larger. We study the equation of state and composition of hypernuclear matter and quark matter - two forms of dense matter in strong magnetic fields. We find that the magnetic field has substantial influence on the properties of hypernuclear matter and quark matter for magnetic field B ≥ 1017 G and B ≥ 1018 G respectively. In particular the matter properties become anisotropic. Moreover, above a critical field B cr, both hypernuclear and quark matter show instability, although the values of Bcr are different for two kinds of matter. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
