A linear stability analysis of a gravity-driven miscible two-fluid flow with matched density and different viscosities, containing a thin mixed layer between the two fluids, down a slippery inclined plane is considered. Results reveal the stabilizing effects on the surface (S), the overlap (O1 and O2) and the TS (not shown) modes that exist for a configuration with more viscous fluid adjacent to the free surface under overlap conditions. There is a possibility of destabilizing the overlap mode (O1) when the mixed layer is very close to the slippery wall, indicating the dual role played by the wall slip. The stabilizing characteristics of slip can be favourably used to suppress the nonlinear breakdown that may happen due to the coexistence of the unstable modes in a flow over a substrate with no slip. © 2015 The Authors. A note on warm standby system

Mechanical ventilation is used for patients with a variety of lung diseases. Traditionally, ventilators have been designed to monotonously deliver equalsized breaths. While it may seem intuitive that lungs may benefit from unvarying and stable ventilation pressure strategy, recently it has been reported that variable lung ventilation is advantageous. In this study, we analyze the mean tidal volume in response to different ‘variable ventilation pressure’ strategies. We found that uniformly distributed variability in pressure gives the best tidal volume as compared to that of normal, scale-free, log-normal, and linear distributions. © Springer India 2015.

Numerical study of variable lung ventilation strategies

This paper presents a novel multiple watermarking scheme for copyright protection and authentication. The core idea is to segment the host image into non-overlapping blocks by the means of space filling curve and based on the amount of DCT energy in the blocks. The threshold values are then selected to embed multiple watermarks in different blocks. The watermarks are embedded into the image by modifying the singular values of the blocks. Finally, modified blocks are mapped back to their original positions using inverse space filling curve to get the watermarked image. A reliable extraction algorithm is finally developed for the extraction of watermarks from the distorted image. The feasibility of this method and its robustness against the different kind of attacks are verified by different computer simulations and analysis. © 2013, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A new robust and efficient multiple watermarking scheme

In this work, we propose an efficient framework for integrating or fusingthermal and visual images. This category of fusion finds applicationin navigation and surveillance systems. The main idea in this category offusion is to successfully extract significant information from both of thethermal and visual images and combine them to form the fused image.The fused image has better representation of the entire scene as comparedto the source images alone. Since, human beings are the principal judgeof navigation and surveillance systems, we explore the ability of visual attentionproperty of the human visual system (HVS) to generate the fusedimage. Generally, techniques for modeling the visual attention generatesaliency maps in order to highlight the relative importance of pixels (orregions) in any image based on HVS. In the proposed approach, we usesaliency maps from the source images to combine the significant thermal information with the significant visual information. The saliency mapsserve two purposes. Firstly, they highlight the salient areas in the thermaland visual images. Secondly, the saliency values are also used to computeweights to generate the final fused image. Hence, the salient parts ofthe visual and thermal images are retained in the fused image. Differenttypes of visual attention modeling techniques are used in the frameworkto demonstrate their relative performance in thermal and visual imagefusion. Though the chosen modeling technique plays a key role in theperformance of the fusion framework, our experiments on various imagesets demonstrate the promise of the proposed approach in terms of visualinspection and different objective evaluation criteria. Image Fusion: Principles, Technology and Applications

Saliency based framework for thermal and visual image fusion

This paper presents a novel chaotic encryption technique for the secure transmission of biometrics data. The proposed technique relies on the fractional random wavelet transform (FrRnWT), the modular transform and the generalized logistic map (GLM). The core idea is to decompose a biometric image into a fractional random wavelet domain using the chaotically generated transform orders. The FrRnWT coefficients are then diffused by a chaotically generated matrix key. In the penultimate step, the modular transform is applied on the diffused image to get the encrypted biometrics image. A reliable decryption process is proposed to reconstruct the original biometrics from the encrypted image. The experimental results and analysis demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed technique. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

A novel chaos-based secure transmission of biometric data

Medical image fusion plays an important role in clinical applications such as image-guided surgery, image-guided radiotherapy, noninvasive diagnosis, and treatment planning. The main motivation is to fuse different multimodal information into a single output. In this instance, we propose a novel framework for spatially registered multimodal medical image fusion, which is primarily based on the non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT). The proposed method enables the decomposition of source medical images into low- and high-frequency bands in NSCT domain. Different fusion rules are then applied to the varied frequency bands of the transformed images. Fusion coefficients are achieved by the following fusion rule: low-frequency components are fused using an activity measure based on the normalized Shannon entropy, which essentially selects low-frequency components from the focused regions with high degree of clearness. In contrast, high-frequency components are fused using the directive contrast, which essentially collects all the informative textures from the source. Integrating these fusion rules, more spatial feature and functional information can be preserved and transferred into the fused images. The performance of the proposed framework is illustrated using four groups of human brain and two clinical bone images from different sources as our experimental subjects. The experimental results and comparison with other methods show the superior performance of the framework in both subjective and objective assessment criteria. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

A new contrast based multimodal medical image fusion framework

In this paper, existence of critical point and weak efficient point of vector optimization problem is studied. A sequence of points in n-dimension is generated using positive definite matrices like Quasi-Newton method. It is proved that accumulation points of this sequence are critical points or weak efficient points under different conditions. An algorithm is provided in this context. This method is free from any kind of priori chosen weighting factors or any other form of a priori ranking or ordering information for objective functions. Also, this method does not depend upon initial point. The algorithm is verified in numerical examples. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

A modified Quasi-Newton method for vector optimization problem

The night-vision image fusion plays a critical role in detecting targets and obstructions in low light or total darkness, which has great importance for pedestrian recognition, vehicle navigation, surveillance and monitoring applications. The central idea is to fuse low-light visible and infrared imagery into a single output. In this paper, we describe a new fusion framework for spatially registered visual and infrared images. The proposed framework utilizes the properties of fractal dimension and phase congruency in the non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) domain. The proposed framework applies multiscale NSCT on visual and IR images to get low- and high-frequency bands. The varied frequency bands of the transformed images are then fused while exploiting their characteristics. Finally, the inverse NSCT is performed to get the fused image. The performance of the proposed framework is validated by extensive experiments on different scene imaginary, where the definite advantages are demonstrated subjectively and objectively. © 2015, Springer-Verlag London.
