This paper deals with the application of alienation coefficients for the detection and classification of various faults on transmission lines. A Global Positioning System is used to synchronize sampling of current signals at both the ends of the transmission line. The alienation coefficients are obtained by comparing successive half cycles of absolute values of current samples at each end. At each end, Fault Index is calculated by adding alienation coefficients of local end and remote end. This Fault Index is compared with threshold to detect and classify the faults. The proposed algorithm has been tested successfully for various types of faults at different locations and different fault incidence angles. This scheme proved to be successful in discriminating non-fault transients from fault transients, also. © 2015 IEEE.

Alienation based fault detection and classification in transmission lines

This paper presents a method for detection and classification of power quality (PQ) disturbances using Stock-well's transform. PQ disturbances are generated using MATLAB as per IEEE-1159 standard. Various features of signals are extracted from the multi-resolution analysis based on Stockwell's transform. These features are used to classify PQ disturbances using the decision tree initialized Fuzzy C-means clustering. It is observed that the Fuzzy C-means clustering based classification yields satisfactory accuracy even under noisy conditions. The investigated PQ disturbances include voltage sag, swell, interruption, harmonics, notch, flicker, oscillatory transient, impulsive transient and spike. Effectiveness of proposed algorithm has been established by satisfactory results of various case studies. © 2016 Asian Institute of Technology.

Recognition of power quality disturbances using S-transform and Fuzzy C-means clustering

This paper presents a low complexity algorithm for compensating the sampling-clock frequency offset encountered in short-range WPAN receivers. The proposed algorithm leverages on the pulse shaping information in the transmitted signal to identify erroneous samples resulting from the sampling-clock frequency offset and then compensates for the same. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm almost completely compensates for offsets of magnitudes specified by WPAN standards. © 2016 IEEE.

A low complexity algorithm for sampling clock-offset compensation in low power WPAN receivers

Two methods to estimate the direct current offset (DCO) of non-coherent receivers for on-off keying (OOK) systems are proposed. These estimate I-arm and Q-arm DCO solely from the digitized samples of the envelope detector. This ameliorates power consuming individual I-arm and Q-arm processing for DCO estimation and makes it more suitable for adoption in next generation wireless ultra-low power (ULP) receivers. Furthermore, the efficacy of the proposed methods is demonstrated for an IEEE 802.15.4q compliant ULP sliding intermediate frequency receiver. © 2016 IEEE.

DC offset estimation for on-off keying based ultra-low power non-coherent receivers

In this paper small-signal model of a symmetrical clamped mode controlled series-series compensated inductive power transfer (IPT) system has been derived using the extended describing function (EDF) method. The derived model has duty cycle, input voltage and switching frequency as control variables and an output voltage as an output variable. A voltage controller has been designed for symmetrical clamped mode control using the SISO Design Tool from MATLAB®. To test the designed controller, a prototype of the series-series compensated IPT system has been developed in lab. Simulation results and experimental results are presented in this paper for the validation of the designed controller. © 2016 IEEE.

Simplified mathematical modelling of phase-shift controlled series-series compensated inductive power transfer system

This paper presents a new trend in the transportation industry to adopt the multilevel inverter-based propulsion systems and gives the design procedure of a new dc/ac three-phase six-level inverter for powering the rail metro cars. The proposed inverter is based on the multilevel converter as it possesses much lower component voltage stress compared with the pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) topologies. Space vector pulsewidthmodulation (SVPWM) with back-to-back clamped diode voltage modulation operation is used to achieve voltage regulation and high efficiency at any loading condition. Zero-current-switching operation is achieved without using an auxiliary circuit, which leads to minimum switching losses. The novelty of the proposed inverter lies within the proposed control methodology, which uses a new switching pattern that guarantees a modified SVPWM to eliminate the unwanted harmonics from the output voltage. The new algorithm is developed using numerical iterative solution using the Newton-Raphson technique that was downloaded to the processor using digital signal processing developed code. The mathematical model is simple but proven to be effective. As a result, a higher operating efficiency at full load of 98.5% is achieved as compared to previous efficiency of 97%. Analytical, simulation, and experimental results of a 1500 Vdc/700 Vac 400-kW converter are presented to offer the proof of concept. The converter provides real estate savings for the train under floor layout, higher operating efficiency as well as better cost price than the conventional two-level PWM hard-switched converters. © 2015 IEEE.

Design and development of an efficient multilevel DC/AC traction inverter for railway transportation electrification

This paper provides an approach to use novel ferrite core geometries and winding configurations to improve effectiveness for electric vehicle wireless charging systems using magnetic resonant inductive power transfer (RIPT). Using ferrite magnetic cores improves the efficiency of IPT and magnetic resonance based IPT systems, and can reduce unwanted stray magnetic radiation in addition to improving coupling efficiency. Different ferrite geometries and various winding configurations are explored on U and I core geometries and their performance is studied using JMAG FEA analysis. Experimental results are shown for each core and winding configuration. From the analysis and the experimental results, it is seen that the U-U core based ferrite geometry system with windings close to the air gap provides the most efficient coupling in larger airgap RIPT applications. Design recommendations are given for a larger airgap WIPT system design. © 2016 IEEE.

Performance Analysis of a High-efficiency Multi-winding Wireless EV Charging System Using U-U and U-I Core Geometries

The emergence of high dynamic range (HDR) is widely seen as an important step toward improving the quality of experience (QoE) of the end users. The concept of HDR QoE is, nonetheless, multi-faceted and comprises of dimensions such as immersiveness, perceptual fidelity, naturalness, etc. These dimensions are prone to be affected during the processing of HDR videos along the delivery chain and as a result affect the QoE of the end user. Thus, this chapter first identifies few key dimensions (components) in HDR QoE and then discusses the impact of HDR processing on few of them. In particular, we find that operations such as tone mapping (and inverse tone mapping) can alter the artistic intent of HDR content, and thus need to be considered in the design and development of HDR video processing algorithms. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.

Quality of Experience and HDR: Concepts and How to Measure It

In this paper we have shown the modeling of Lateral Double-Diffused MOS (LDMOS) transistor. A LDMOS structure can be divided into two parts, intrinsic channel and extended drift region. The intinsic channel region is modeled by industry standard BSIM6 model and extended drift region has been modeled by the modified CMC standard model of R3. The R3 model of non-linear resistor, which includes physical effects like velocity-saturation, self-heating etc. has been modified to include gate bias dependency. The new model has been validated with technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations and measured data from ON Semiconductor. The model (which is the combination of BSIM6 and R3 models) shows excellent agreement with the TCAD simulations and measured data. © 2016 IEEE.

Modeling of high voltage LDMOSFET using industry standard BSIM6 MOS model

The work aims to leverage event triggered controller for power converters to achieve better performance and to improve overall efficiency of the system. It presents a control implementation scheme which is event based and can be applied to nonlinear systems with a stabilizing feedback. In this scheme, the control input signal is held constant, not periodically, but while the performance is satisfactory. In this paper, an existing classical Sliding Mode Control (SMC), which regulates a Buck converter, is made event-triggered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Complete analysis is done to prove the feasibility of the technique for practical application and simulations have been carried out to support the theoretical claims. © 2016 IEEE.
