This paper presents a method for recognition of power quality disturbances using Stockwell's transform. Power quality disturbances are generated using MATLAB as per IEEE standards. Various features of signals are extracted from the multi-resolution analysis based on Stockwell's transform. These features are used to classify various power quality disturbances using the rule-based decision tree. It is observed that high efficiency of classification is achieved using S-transform based ruled decision tree. The investigated power quality disturbances include voltage sag, swell, interruption, harmonics, notch, flicker, oscillatory transient, impulsive transient and spike. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been established by satisfactory results of various case studies. © 2016 IEEE.

Recognition of power quality disturbances using S-transform and rule-based decision tree

In photovoltaic (PV) array, the output power and the power-voltage (P-V ) characteristic of PV array are totally dependent on the temperature and solar insolation. Therefore, if these atmospheric parameters fluctuate rapidly, then the maximum power point (MPP) of the P-V curve of PV array also fluctuates very rapidly. This rapid fluctuation of the MPP may be in accordance with the uniform shading of the PV panel or may be in accordance to the partially shaded due to the clouds, tall building, trees, and raindrops. However, in both cases, the MPP tracking (MPPT) is not only a nonlinear problem, this becomes a highly nonlinear problem, which solution is time bounded. Because the highly fluctuating atmospheric conditions change the P-V characteristic after every small time duration. This paper introduces a hybrid of 'Jaya' and 'differential evolution (DE)' (JayaDE) technique for MPPT in the highly fluctuating atmospheric conditions. This JayaDE algorithm is tested on MATLAB simulator and is verified on a developed hardware of the solar PV system, which consists of a single peak and many multiple peaks in the voltage-power curve. Moreover, the tracking ability is compared with the recent state of the art methods. The satisfactory steady-state and dynamic performances of this new hybrid technique under variable irradiance and temperature levels show the superiority over the state-of-the-art control methods. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Rapid MPPT for Uniformly and Partial Shaded PV System by Using JayaDE Algorithm in Highly Fluctuating Atmospheric Conditions

This paper introduces a battery charging scheme from a solar photovoltaic (SPV) by using a single sensor-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategy. Here, for quick and efficient tracking, a novel hybrid 'Cauchy and Gaussian sine cosine optimization' (CGSCO) algorithm is proposed for MPPT, which is based on only a single current sensor. The main objective of the CGSCO algorithm is, maximum extraction of the power from SPV panel and efficiently charging the battery through maximizing the charging current of the battery. Due to the single sensor, the cost of the charging scheme is very low, as well as the algorithm complexity and computational burden are very less, so it can be easily implemented on the low-cost microcontroller. In this paper, a single current sensor-based battery charging scheme by CGSCO algorithm is tested on MATLAB simulator and verified on a developed hardware of the SPV system. The panel condition, with and without shaded as well as dynamic environmental condition (variable temperature and insolation), is considered during simulation as well as on hardware implementation. Moreover, the tracking ability is compared with the most recent state of the art techniques (Grey wolf optimization and Lagrange interpolation particle swarm optimization (LIPSO)) as well as compared with 'CGSCO with the conventional dual (voltage and current) sensor-based MPPT scheme.' The efficient battery charging with quick MPPT by CGSCO algorithm w.r.t. all state of the art techniques as well as dual sensor-based MPPT scheme, in steady-state as well as in dynamic conditions meets the motive of the work. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Single Sensor-Based MPPT of Partially Shaded PV System for Battery Charging by Using Cauchy and Gaussian Sine Cosine Optimization

Optimal Design of FIR &amp; IIR Filters by using Evolutionary Algorithms

In this paper, a new control law is proposed for the nonlinear underactuated system. It is proved that the proposed control achieves asymptotic stability of the whole system. A broad class of underactuated systems, termed as commensurate underactuated systems, is identified where numbers of actuated and unactuated degrees of freedom are equal; for which the proposed control can be used as the general stabilizing control. The design methodology is simple and uses the prevalent total energy like Lyapunov function. The control strategy is tested on slosh-container system, a benchmark underactuated system of the class considered herein. We discern some important features of the proposed control law and analyze its effectiveness through physical interpretations. The findings are verified through simulations and experimental results for the slosh-container system. © 1996-2012 IEEE.

A New Nonlinear Control for Asymptotic Stabilization of a Class of Underactuated Systems: An Implementation to Slosh-Container Problem

In this study, a new second order sliding mode controller is designed through a novel non-linear sliding surface proposal for a slosh-container system. A linear sliding surface based controller using second order sliding mode is also derived for the comparison purpose. Both the controllers need only output measurements. The super-twisting algorithm is employed to ensure the finite time convergence of system trajectories to a second order sliding set. In sliding phase, the asymptotic stability of the system states to a desired origin is proved by proposing a new Lyapunov function for the system. A slosh-container system representing underactuated interconnected non-linear dynamics is considered. It is shown that how the consideration of limited track length of container affects the stability conditions. To generate a position trajectory for container from the control input signal, a new approach is employed for the implementation purpose. It is demonstrated through simulations and experimental results that the proposed controller based on the novel non-linear sliding surface outperforms the other controller based on the linear surface and it is more suitable on various practical aspects. This also validates the theoretical findings of the study. © 2016 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Improved output-feedback second order sliding mode control design with implementation for underactuated slosh-container system having confined track length

This paper performs an extensive review on control schemes and architectures applied to dc microgrids (MGs). It covers multilayer hierarchical control schemes, coordinated control strategies, plug-and-play operations, stability and active damping aspects, as well as nonlinear control algorithms. Islanding detection, protection, and MG clusters control are also briefly summarized. All the mentioned issues are discussed with the goal of providing control design guidelines for dc MGs. The future research challenges, from the authors' point of view, are also provided in the final concluding part. © 2013 IEEE.

Review on Control of DC Microgrids and Multiple Microgrid Clusters

This paper aims to present an analysis of a noise-aided contrast enhancement algorithm in hybrid transform domains. The performance of our earlier noise-enhanced iterative algorithm, formulated from the motion dynamics of a double-well system exhibiting dynamic stochastic resonance, has been investigated here on hybrid coefficients, viz. singular values (SVs) of wavelet coefficients, SVs of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients, and DCT of wavelet coefficients, of a dark image. The performance of the algorithm is gauged using metrics indicating relative contrast enhancement and perceptual quality. Colorfulness, subjective visual scores and logarithmic contrast metrics for outputs are also observed. Experimental results display noteworthy enhancement of contrast on both natural and synthetically-darkened images. It can be inferred from comparative analysis with respect to other conventional methods that while the algorithm is observed to work well in all three hybrid domains, the SV-DCT domain performs better in terms of iteration count, while DCT-DWT is found to outperform others in terms of perceptual quality. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Hybrid Domain Analysis of Noise-Aided Contrast Enhancement Using Stochastic Resonance

We present a compact model for source-to-drain tunneling current in sub-10-nm gate-all-around FinFET, where tunneling current becomes nonnegligible. Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method with a quadratic potential energy profile is used to analytically capture the dependence on biases in the tunneling probability expression and simplify the equation. The calculated tunneling probability increases with smaller effective mass and with increasing bias. We at first use the Gaussian quadrature method to integrate Landauer's equation for tunneling current computation without further approximations. To boost simulation speed, some approximations are made. The simplified equation shows a good accuracy and has more flexibility for compact model purpose. The model is implemented into industry standard Berkeley Short-channel IGFET Model-common multi-gate model for future technology node, and is validated by the full-band atomistic quantum transport simulation data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Compact Modeling Source-to-Drain Tunneling in Sub-10-nm GAA FinFET with Industry Standard Model

In this paper, we presents the effect of higher back plane doping on analog figure of merit of fully depleted-silicon on insulator (FD-SOI) MOSFETs at RF frequencies. Procedure for DC and RF parameter extraction at RF frequencies has been discussed. Surface potential based Industry standard BSIM-IMG model for FD-SOI MOSFETs with enhanced gate parasitic network is used for validation of extracted DC and RF parameters such as gate resistance, gate parasitic capacitance, output conductance, transconductance. © 2016 IEEE.
