Heritage represents everything of the past for which we can be proud of today. In this chapter, we introduce the readers to the different categories of heritage as defined by UNESCO. The chapter then discusses the various techniques being developed and different research efforts going on in the world to digitally preserve cultural heritage-both its tangible and intangible aspects. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi in South India, with its historical and mythological significance, deserves preservation in physical and digital space. This book is an outcome of the India Digital Heritage project supported by the Department of Science and Technology of the government of India, focussing on the digital preservation of the heritage of Hampi. It attempts to show how multidisciplinary engagement across technology and humanities can provide significant impetus to the cause of documentation, showcasing and interpretation of cultural heritage and in some situations productive explorations of historical debates using digital tools. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Digital Hampi: Preserving Indian Cultural Heritage

Introduction

In the literature, it has been assumed that the Weber fraction is always fixed for an individual and is independent of any temporal variation in the stimulus. If the assumption is not correct, the perceptual limitations of a human being are not fully exploited by the fixed Weber fraction. For example, if the signal changes very slowly, it is difficult for a user to react to the change, and when the change is too quick, the user may not be able to respond because of nonzero human response time (minimum time required for reacting to a change). Thus, a fixed Weber fraction will contribute inessential data packets for such kind of signals. This leads us to examine how the perceptual deadzone is affected by the rate of change in the kinesthetic force stimulus. In this chapter, we take up this particular study. For this purpose, we design an experiment where a user is exposed to either a linearly increasing (positive slope) or decreasing (negative slope) haptic force stimulus with a varying slope S, and is asked to react to the change. We intend to find a decision boundary as a function of the rate of change of stimulus (slope) to compute the Weber fraction. We apply both parametric and nonparametric classifiers on the recorded data to estimate the best-fit decision boundary. We demonstrate that the Weber fraction decreases monotonically with an increase in the slope for both positive and negative regions. It means that as the slope is increased, the change in the signal is more easily perceivable. We also demonstrate that there is an asymmetric behavior of perception between the increasing and the decreasing force stimuli. Hence, it has been shown that the assumption of a fixed Weber fraction for a user is not correct and it is a monotonic function of the temporal variation of the stimulus. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Effect of rate of change of stimulus

A broadband dipole antenna fed by the Substrate Integrated Coaxial Line (SICL) to work in Local Multipoint Distributed System (LMDS) band is presented in this paper. The feeding network consist of SICL which holds the advantage of eliminating the complex network of balun and reflector in conventional microstrip based feeding designs of planar antennas. The proposed design utilises parasitic dipole in addition to the primary dipole antenna to enhance bandwidth. This antenna exhibits gain varying from 7.2dBi to 8dBi and 19% impedance bandwidth within the range of 25.7GHz to 31.2GHz. This antenna finds its application in LMDS (26GHz-29GHz) systems and millimetre wave applications. © 2018 IEEE.

Design of Substrate Integrated Coaxial Line based Broadband Dipole Antenna for Millimeter Wave Application

Hybrid CBRAM devices based on PVP/HfOx bilayer were investigated for their switching performance. A reliable and low voltage bipolar resistive switching operation was observed in these devices with repeatability of 300 cycles, Ion/Ioff of 80, set (Vset) and reset (Vreset) voltages of 1.03 V and −0.68 V, retention time of 7200 s, and switching endurance of &gt;2000 cycles in devices with 2.5 wt% PVP concentration. Low device-to-device variation was observed with 10 devices tested showing nearly similar switching parameters. Weibull's distribution of Vset and Vreset voltages have indicated reliable switching performance in devices. The pinholes formation in PVP layer guides the confined growth and dissolution of Ag conductive filament (CF) in the bilayer structure resulting in a stable, reliable and low voltage switching operation. PVP film roughness and pinholes depth have shown downtrend with PVP concentration. During the set process, a CF formed across the electrodes constitutes of Ag atoms, due to pinholes assisted electro-migration of Ag ions. Whereas in the reset process, the diffused Ag+ ions migrate back towards top electrode due to the electrochemical and joule-heating assisted rupture of CF in the PVP/HfOx bilayer structure. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Investigation of resistive switching in PVP and ultra-thin HfOx based bilayer hybrid RRAM

Effect of thermal annealing on the performance of flexible OFETs was investigated. Annealing at low temperatures up to 50 °C enhanced the molecular ordering and granular arrangement leading to improved device performance, however, a permanent degradation was induced at high temperature annealing due to loss in crystallinity and crack generation. An annealed device exhibited a larger decay in drain current than a pristine device under constant bias stress. Under combined effects of mechanical and thermal stress, effect of thermal stress was found to be dominant at higher annealing temperatures, resulting in monotonic performance degradation. © 2017 IEEE.

Effect of thermal annealing on electrical stability of TIPS-pentacene flexible OFETs

Metal oxide-based gas sensors are known for operating at high temperatures, which results in high power consumption. This drawback limits their application in battery-operated devices as well as system on chip (SoC) applications. In this paper, the design, simulation, integrated circuit (IC)-compatible fabrication, and testing of an integrated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) micro-heater with a sensor platform using planar MEMS technology are presented. The micro-heater is integrated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and a nano-silicon (Si) heterostructure using a simple fabrication process. This heterostructure is tested in the presence of different analytes like ethanol, acetone, iso-propyl alcohol, xylene, and benzene. The sensor shows an optimum sensing response at 100 °C with a maximum response to ethanol vapors. In comparison to the crystalline Si, the power consumption of the nano-Si-based platform is almost half. The formation of the heterostructure, highest sensitivity to ethanol, and repeatable ppm level of ethanol sensing at a comparatively low operating temperature are reported. The results show the TiO2/nano-Si integration with the MEMS micro-heater, and demonstrate the reduced power consumption of 18 mW by nano-Si, which is very small in comparison to what is consumed by crystalline Si. The temperature profiling carried out using an IR-camera ensures the uniform temperature of 100 °C over the suspended sensing structure. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Development of scalable planar MEMS technology for low power operated ethanol sensor

This paper presents the development of an extremely sensitive and selective acetone sensor prototype which can be used as a platform for non-invasive diabetes detection through exhaled human breath. The miniaturized sensors were produced in high yield with the use of standard microfabrication processes. The sensors were based on a heterostructure composed of MoO3 and nano-porous silicon (NPS). Features like acetone selective, enhanced sensor response and 0.5 ppm detection limit were observed upon introduction of MoO3 on the NPS. The sensors were found to be repeatable and stable for almost 1 year, as tested under humid conditions at room temperature. It was inferred that the interface resistance of MoO3 and NPS played a key role in the sensing mechanism. With the use of breath analysis and lab-on-chip, medical diagnosis procedures can be simplified and provide solutions for point-of-care testing. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

MoO3/nano-Si heterostructure based highly sensitive and acetone selective sensor prototype: A key to non-invasive detection of diabetes

In this letter, an air filled substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) based cavity backed slot antenna design is proposed to achieve high radiation efficiency and gain by reducing the dielectric loss component by removing the dielectric inside the cavity. An effective miniaturization is also achieved by introducing a specialized slot backed by the cavity. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Air filled substrate integrated waveguide cavity backed slot antenna

A printed Quasi-Yagi Antenna with a new feed, Substrate Integrated Coaxial Line (SICL) working in the millimeter wave frequency range is presented. This new feeding technique makes the antenna design simple, surpasses the need to have balun and reflector. The antenna design presented here operates at 28GHz with a frequency band of 6.8 GHz, providing a gain of 7.2dBi and front to back ratio of better than 9dB. The SICL section exhibits good shielding ability which is advantageous for circuits implemented in millimeter wave frequency range. It also enhances the performance of the antenna by providing a shielding to feed network. It also reduces the complexity of the feeding network and makes it compact. This antenna is suited for millimeter wave automotive radar application operating at K Band (18-26 GHz). © 2018 IEEE.

Design of substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL) fed planar quasi-yagi antenna for millimeter wave application

Layout analysis, mainly including binarization and page segmentation, is one of the most important performance determining steps of an OCR system for complex medieval document images, which contain noise, distortions and irregular layouts. In this paper, we present high performance page segmentation techniques for medieval European document images which include a novel main-body and side-notes segregation and an improved version of OCRopus (OCRopus,) based text line extraction. In order to complete the high performance layout analysis pipeline, we have also presented the application of the percentile based binarization (Afzal et al., 2014) and the multiresolution morphology based text and non-text segmentation (Bukhari et al., 2011) methods over historical document images. presented layout analysis techniques are applied to a collection of the 15th century Latin document images, which achieved more than 90% accuracy for each of the segmentation techniques.
