The design of periodic output feedback control for a multivariable smart structure system was discussed. A periodic output feeback vibrational control system for a flexible smart cantilever beam was designed by bonding patches of piezoelectric layers as a sensor/actuator pair to the master structure at different locations along the length of the beam. The entire structure was modeled in state space form using the finite element method by dividing the master structure 4 finite elements and placing the sensor/actuator pair at finite element positions, 2 and 4, giving rise to a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system.

Multivariable Control Of A Smart Structure Using Periodic Output Feedback

Power System Stabilizer (PSS) are added to excitation system to enhance the damping of electric power system during low frequency oscillations. Design of decentralized PSS for 4 machines with 10 buses using periodic output feedback is proposed. The nonlinear model of multi-machine system is linearized and linear state space model is obtained. An output injection gain is obtained using LQR technique. A decentralized periodic output feedback gain which realizes this output injection gain is obtained using LMI approach. This method doesn't require state of the system for feedback. It uses only the output for feedback. Thus it is easily implementable.

Design of Decentralized Power System Stabilizer for Multi-Machine Power System Using Periodic Output Feedback Technique

In this paper we present a new algorithm for discrete sliding mode control of linear multivariable systems using fast output sampling feedback. Here we make use of a single switching surface regardless of the number of inputs. The main contribution of this work is that instead of using the system states, the output samples are used for designing the controller. Numerical example demonstrates the design technique. Output feedback sliding mode control for MIMO discrete time systems

It is shown that the LPCVD deposition technique and annealing of polysilicon effect the mechanical properties of the released structures, for micromachined sensors. Tensile residual stress is often required for a stable polysilicon MEMS structure after final release process. © 2002 IEEE.

A process technique to engineer the stress of thick doped polysilicon films for MEMS applications

In the present work a fabrication process based on a controlled semi-isotropic reactive plasma etching of single crystal silicon has been formulated to create sharp Si-tips of desired heights using high-resolution electron beam lithography for the realisation of high-density field emission arrays. PMMA was used as e-beam resist and patterns in the shape of squares were transferred to a 2000 Å thick thermal oxide, which was used as etch mask for the subsequent reactive plasma process. For the development of desired RIE process for the etching of silicon tips, a number of Fluorine based plasma processes have been analysed to control the various parameters in order to achieve a desired shape of the sidewalls. Different kinds of wall profiles have been generated to obtain ultimate sharp-silicon tips. Two approaches have been followed, one, a multi-step and another, single step reactive plasma process. Silicon tips with a density of 6.25 × 106 tips/cm2 have been fabricated. Salient features and limitations of the fabrication process are discussed.

Micromachining of single crystal silicon in fluorine based reactive plasma for the fabrication of high density nano-tip field-emitter arrays

This paper presents a new approach for sliding-mode control (SMC) of discrete-time systems using the reaching law approach together with the fast output sampling (FOS) feedback technique. This method does not need the system states for feedback as it makes use of only the output samples for designing the controller. Thus, this methodology is more practical and easy to implement. Numerical example demonstrates the design technique. Simulation results show that the proposed FOS SMC technique produces the same results as obtained by state feedback SMC technique.

A new algorithm for discrete-time sliding-mode control using fast output sampling feedback

There is an increasing interest of space industries towards the MEMS devices, which already found several applications in other sectors. The potential benefits from the use of those devices are good electrical performances, power savings, small size. This article describes a silicon technology used for the development of MEMS RF switches. The choice of a well established technology helps maintaining competitive manufacturing costs. The electrical and mechanical designs make use of FDTD/TLM and ANSYS simulation tools respectively. The test results of the first wafer run are also presented.

A silicon based MEMS technology for electro-statically actuated SPDT RF switches

In this paper, the problem of modeling and output feedback control design for smart structural system using piezoelectric as sensor/actuator is addressed. The model for a smart cantilever beam is developed by Finite Element Method (FEM). State space models for a smart cantilever beam with single sensor/actuator for three different sensor/actuator locations are obtained. The fast output sampling feedback control is designed to control the first two vibration modes for each sensor/actuator location and its performance is evaluated. © 2002 SPIE · 0277-786X/02/$15.00.

Design of fast output sampling feedback control for smart structure model

The paper presents a nodal technique for modeling a large Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). Model equations have been derived from the two group diffusion equations and validated by applying it to a benchmark problem for a large heavy water reactor. The computational results obtained from the model are compared with the benchmark results. © 2001 EUCA.

Modeling of a large pressurized heavy water reactor by nodal approximation

The sliding mode control systems (SMCS) for which the switching variable is designed independent of the initial conditions are known to be sensitive to parameter variations and extraneous disturbances during the reaching phase. For second order systems this drawback is eliminated by using the moving switching line technique where the switching line is initially designed to pass the initial conditions and is subsequently moved towards a predetermined switching line. In this paper, we make use of the above idea of moving switching line together with the reaching law approach to design a discrete output feedback sliding mode control. The main contributions of this work are such that we do not require to use system states as it makes use of only the output samples for designing the controller and by using the moving switching line a low sensitivity system is obtained through shortening the reaching phase. Simulation results show that the fast output sampling feedback guarantees sliding motion similar to that obtained using state feedback.
