Renewable energy can be used to decrease global dependence on natural resources, and tidal power can be the primary form of renewable power utilized. Built upon steam turbine knowledge, tidal turbines draw on innovative technology and design to operate on both the inflow and outflow of water through them. Tidal power utilizes twice the daily variation in sea level caused primarily by the gravitational effect of the Moon and, to a lesser extent by the Sun on the world's oceans. The Earth's rotation is also a factor in the production of tides. Control & Operation system for tidal power plant should be simple, reliable, cheap and with minimum interference of operating personal. Control system should be such that remote operation can be performed easily. The main functions of the controller for automation is to execute starting and the shut down sequences under normal and emergency conditions. In this paper an attempt has been made to elaborate the use of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for control and automation of tidal power plant, its advantages and cost effectiveness. Programmable logic controllers (PLC) can be used for control & automation of tidal power plant. The main reason for this is cost effectiveness. Various functions and controls can be achieved by programming the PLC. They can be used for full plant automation including governing of auto-operation includes speed control, load control, excitation control, and level control automatic start/stop sequencing, barrage gate control, start/stop of auxiliary systems, and protection requirement etc. Functions other than control like continuous monitoring, data recording, instrumentation and protections can also be performed. For remote operation, communication with PLC can be performed. For continuous monitoring purpose, a personal computer can be interfaced with PLC and continuous data can be recorded regularly [16]. © 2012 IEEE.

Automation of a Dry Steam Geothermal Power Plant

To maintain Power Integrity in a high speed system, an effective methodology for suppressing the cavity-mode anti-resonances peaks is presented. The optimum values and the optimal positions of the decoupling capacitors are found using Particle Swarm Optimization, which leads to optimum impedance of power plane loaded with decoupling capacitors. Optimum number of capacitors and their values, by which impedance of loaded board is matched below the target impedance of the system, are found. © 2012 IEEE.

Maintaining power integrity by damping the cavity-mode anti-resonances' peaks on a power plane by particle swarm optimization

To ensure that any proposed microstructure design fortifies the device from the stress due to load applied during and post fabrication process its structural modeling is mandatory. The work presented in this paper highlights the need to optimize the thin membranes or films for fabrication of thermoelectric microstructures. This paper analyses the stress and deformation in thin film due to suction load during photolithography (SUSS MicroTec Lithography) which exerts 0.8 bar pressure on the film. Investigation and characterization of 3 types of thermoelectric membrane designs are presented using Finite Element Method software COMSOL Multiphysics™ 3.3a at applied load of 80000 N/m2. These characterizations are significant for the stability and feasibility of structures during processing and thereafter. A membrane experiencing stress above 5e8 dynes/cm2 is considered stressed film for the thermoelectric membrane. However, a microstructure with stress below 5e8 dynes/cm2 is taken low stressed. The microstructure device sized 9.7 mm × 9.7 mm is optimized by doing comparison of stress and deformation observed in differently designed membranes of varying thickness and widths. For successful fabrication and operation of a device it is necessary that before moving to fabrication stage, the proposed micro-structure device must be analyzed and optimized by structural modeling to avoid any kind of undesirable deformation or ductile failure. © 2012 IFSA.

FEM based optimization of thin membrane for thermoelectric energy harvesting devices

Distributed Generation (DG) System is a small scale electric power generation at or near the user's facility as opposed to the normal mode of centralized power generation. In order to ensure safe and reliable operation of power system based on DS, grid synchronization algorithm plays a very important role. This paper presents a Double Synchronous Reference Frame (DSRF) phase locked loop (PLL) based on synthesis circuit for grid synchronization of distributed generation (DG) system under grid disturbances. Due to flexible in characteristics, DSRF PLL can accurately detect the phase irrespective of the grid conditions. Further, it demonstrates how the PLLs track the phase angle during some of the major abnormal grid conditions like voltage unbalance, line to ground fault and voltage sag etc. The superiority of DSRF PLL over SRF PLL is well illustrated by the simulations results obtained from MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. © 2012 IEEE.

Improved grid synchronization algorithm for DG system using DSRF PLL under grid disturbances

Wafer-level micro-encapsulation is an innovative, low-cost, wafer-level packaging method for encapsulating RF MEMS switches. This article presents an approach for design and processing steps related to encapsulation of individual RF components e.g. CPW, RF MEMS switches, in view of the variation in performance subsequent to packaging. Bottom contact vertical packaging is more prone to misalignment margin and easy to make connections. Cavity height of 30 μm is optimized for bottom contact vertical packaging. © 2012 SPIE.

Design of vertical packaging technology for RF MEMS switch

Objective speech quality assessment is a challenging task which aims to emulate human judgment in the complex and time consuming task of subjective assessment. It is difficult to perform in line with the human perception due the complex and nonlinear nature of the human auditory system. The challenge lies in representing speech signals using appropriate features and subsequently mapping these features into a quality score. This paper proposes a nonintrusive metric for the quality assessment of noisesuppressed speech. The originality of the proposed approach lies primarily in the use of Mel filter bank energies (FBEs) as features and the use of support vector regression (SVR) for feature mapping. We utilize the sensitivity of FBEs to noise in order to obtain an effective representation of speech towards quality assessment. In addition, the use of SVRexploits the advantages of kernels which allow the regression algorithm to learn complex data patterns via nonlinear transformation for an effective and generalized mapping of features into the quality score. Extensive experiments conducted using two third party databases with different noise-suppressed speech signals show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2011 IEEE.

Nonintrusive quality assessment of noise suppressed speech with Mel-filtered energies and support vector regression

High Dynamic Range (HDR) images/videos require the use of a tone mapping operator (TMO) when visualized on Low Dynamic Range (LDR) displays. From an artistic intention point of view, TMOs are not necessarily transparent and might induce different behavior to view the content. In this paper, we investigate and quantify how TMOs modify visual attention (VA). To that end both objective and subjective tests in the form of eye-tracking experiments have been conducted on several still image content that have been processed by 11 different TMOs. Our studies confirm that TMOs can indeed modify human attention and fixation behavior significantly. Therefore our studies suggest that VA needs consideration for evaluating the overall perceptual impact of TMOs on HDR content. Since the existing studies so far have only considered the quality or aesthetic appeal angle, this study brings in a new perspective regarding the importance of VA in HDR content processing for visualization on LDR displays. © 2012 SPIE.

Effect of tone mapping operators on visual attention deployment

We present a new image quality assessment algorithm based on the phase and magnitude of the 2-D discrete Fourier transform. The basic idea is to compare the phase and magnitude of the reference and distorted images to compute the quality score. However, it is well known that the human visual system's sensitivity to different frequency components is not the same. We accommodate this fact via a simple yet effective strategy of non-uniform binning of the frequency components. This process also leads to reduced space representation of the image thereby enabling the reduced-reference (RR) prospects of the proposed scheme. We employ linear regression to integrate the effects of the changes in phase and magnitude. In this way, the required weights are determined via proper training and hence more convincing and effective. Last, using the fact that phase usually conveys more information than magnitude, we use only the phase for RR quality assessment. This provides the crucial advantage of further reduction in the required amount of reference image information. The proposed method is, therefore, further scalable for RR scenarios. We report extensive experimental results using a total of nine publicly available databases: seven image (with a total of 3832 distorted images with diverse distortions) and two video databases (totally 228 distorted videos). These show that the proposed method is overall better than several of the existing full-reference algorithms and two RR algorithms. Additionally, there is a graceful degradation in prediction performance as the amount of reference image information is reduced thereby confirming its scalability prospects.
