BSIM6 is the new Compact Model Coalition (CMC) standard bulk MOSFET model. It offers excellent fitting capability, accurate RF/analog simulations, and similar implementation features of the small dimension effects as included in the popular BSIM4 model. These features make BSIM6 a very desirable candidate for future nano-MOSFET simulations. In this work we evaluate the capabilities of the model and perform benchmark tests to assess the strengths of the model. Bulk 90nm technology MOSFET data is used to extract BSIM6 for analog/RF specific applications. Industry standard benchmark tests have been performed and results shown against the hardware data (where applicable). The model is found to correlate very well with hardware data and passes all important model quality benchmark tests for analog/RF applications. © 2014 IEEE.

BSIM6 - Benchmarking the next-generation MOSFET model for RF applications

With the aim of improving the immersive experience of the end user, High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging has been gaining popularity. Therefore, proper validation and performance benchmarking of HDR processing algorithms is a key step towards standardization and commercial deployment. A crucial component of such validation studies is the selection of a challenging and balanced set of source (reference) HDR content. In order to facilitate this, we present an objective method based on the premise that a more challenging HDR scene encapsulates higher contrast, and as a result will show up more visible errors on contrast reduction. This information is subsequently analyzed via fuzzy clustering to enable a probabilistic interpretation. To evaluate the proposed approach, we performed an experimental study on a large set of publicly available HDR images. © 2014 IEEE.

An objective method for High Dynamic Range source content selection

High Dynamic Range (HDR) signals capture much higher contrasts as compared to the traditional 8-bit low dynamic range (LDR) signals. This is achieved by representing the visual signal via values that are related to the real-world luminance, instead of gamma encoded pixel values which is the case with LDR. Therefore, HDR signals cover a larger luminance range and tend to have more visual appeal. However, due to the higher luminance conditions, the existing methods cannot be directly employed for objective quality assessment of HDR signals. For that reason, the HDR Visual Difference Predictor (HDR-VDP-2) has been proposed. HDR-VDP-2 is primarily a visibility prediction metric i.e. whether the signal distortion is visible to the eye and to what extent. Nevertheless, it also employs a pooling function to compute an overall quality score. This paper focuses on the pooling aspect in HDR-VDP-2 and employs a comprehensive database of HDR images (with their corresponding subjective ratings) to improve the prediction accuracy of HDR-VDP-2. We also discuss and evaluate the existing objective methods and provide a perspective towards better HDR quality assessment. © 2014 SPIE-IS&T.

On improving the pooling in HDR-VDP-2 towards better HDR perceptual quality assessment

Generalization of the Super-Twisting algorithm (STA) for r relative degree system with respect to output, ensuring finite time convergence to the set σ, σ,..., π(r) where σ represents the output via absolutely continuous control signal using information of σ, σ,..., π(r)-1 are discussed. The convergence conditions for the 3-STA algorithm are proposed. The formula for algorithm of arbitrary order is suggested. The simulations results are confirmed the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. © 2014 IEEE.

Higher order super-twisting algorithm

In this paper, a novel method for lossless compression of video is proposed. Almost all the prediction based methods reported in literature are of two pass. In the first pass, motion compensated frame is obtained and in the second, some sophisticated method is used to predict the pixels of the current frame. The proposed method is an efficient replacement for the first method that predicts current pixel using an estimate of deviation from the pixel at same temporal location in the previous frame. In this scheme, causal pixels are divided into bins based on the distance between the current and causal pixels. The novelty of the work is in finding out the fixed coefficients of the bins for a particular type of video sequence. The overall performance of the proposed method is same with much lower computational complexity. © 2014 IEEE.

Bin classification using temporal gradient estimation for lossless video coding

The assessment of fetal wellbeing depends heavily on variations in fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns. The variations in FHR patterns are very complex in nature thus its reliable interpretation is very difficult and often leads to erroneous diagnosis. We propose a new method for evaluation of fetal health status based on interval type-2 fuzzy logic through fetal phonocardiography (fPCG). Type-2 fuzzy logic is a powerful tool in handling uncertainties due to extraneous variations in FHR patterns through its increased fuzziness of relations. Four FHR parameters are extracted from each fPCG signal for diagnostic decision making. The membership functions of these four inputs and one output are chosen as a range of values so as to represent the level of uncertainty. The fuzzy rules are constructed based on standard clinical guidelines on FHR parameters. Experimental clinical tests have shown very good performance of the developed system in comparison with the FHR trace simultaneously recorded through standard fetal monitor. Statistical evaluation of the developed system shows 92% accuracy. With the proposed method we hope that, long-term and continuous antenatal care will become easy, cost effective, reliable and efficient. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Interval type-2 fuzzy logic based antenatal care system using phonocardiography

This paper discusses the robust stabilization of a linear time-invariant system based on event triggering strategy. In most practical system, it is not possible to update control in continuous manner, so it is given to plant at some periodic discrete instants only. Recently, the event based control technique for control law update has become popular as it uses the resources efficiently while guaranteeing closed loop system stability. We address here the event based sliding mode control for a linear system in the presence of disturbances and it is shown that the closed loop system achieves stability with respect to measurement errors. The expression for minimum control execution time, where the control law gets updated only after this time interval is also derived. Simulation results are given to verify the theoretical analysis. © 2014 IEEE.

Event based robust stabilization of linear systems

InN nanorods (NRs) were grown on Si(111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The growth of InN NRs has been demonstrated using an electron-beam evaporated (~2 nm) Au layer prior to the initiation of growth. The structure and morphology of as deposited Au film, annealed at 600 °C, and InN NRs were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Chemical characterization was performed with energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Single-crystalline wurtzite structure of InN NRs is verified by transmission electron microscopy. The formation process of NRs is investigated and a qualitative mechanism is proposed. © 2012, The Author(s).

Study of InN nanorods growth mechanism using ultrathin Au layer by plasma-assisted MBE on Si(111)

In this study, a dynamic stochastic resonance (DSR)-based technique in spatial domain has been proposed for the enhancement of dark- and low-contrast images. Stochastic resonance (SR) is a phenomenon in which the performance of a system (low-contrast image) can be improved by addition of noise. However, in the proposed work, the internal noise of an image has been utilised to produce a noise-induced transition of a dark image from a state of low contrast to that of high contrast. DSR is applied in an iterative fashion by correlating the bistable system parameters of a double-well potential with the intensity values of a low-contrast image. Optimum output is ensured by adaptive computation of performance metrics – relative contrast enhancement factor (F), perceptual quality measures and colour enhancement factor. When compared with the existing enhancement techniques such as adaptive histogram equalisation, gamma correction, single-scale retinex, multi-scale retinex, modified high-pass filtering, edge-preserving multi-scale decomposition and automatic controls of popular imaging tools, the proposed technique gives significant performance in terms of contrast and colour enhancement as well as perceptual quality. Comparison with a spatial domain SR-based technique has also been illustrated.

Enhancement of dark and low-contrast images using dynamic stochastic resonance

Power Integrity problem for a high speed power plane is discussed in context of selection and placement of decoupling capacitors. The s-parameters data of power plane geometry and capacitors are used for the accurate analysis including bulk capacitors and VRM, for a real world problem. The optimal capacitors and their optimum locations on the board are found using particle swarm optimization. A novel and accurate methodology is presented which can be used for any high speed Power delivery Network. © 2013 IEEE.
