This paper proposes multivariable integral sliding mode controller for any Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) system. The conventional integral sliding mode controller consists of a nominal control and a discontinuous feedback control such that the overall control is discontinuous in nature. The discontinuity in feedback control is undesirable for practical applications due to chattering. In this paper the existing integral sliding mode control law for MIMO systems with matched disturbances is modified by replacing the discontinuous part by a multivariable super twisting algorithm. This proposed controller is continuous in nature due to the combinations of two continuous controls and also disturbance can be rejected successfully. The effectiveness of the proposed control method has been demonstrated with the simulation results. © 2015 IEEE.

Multivariable continuous integral sliding mode control

The authors discuss here the robust stabilisation of a linear time-invariant system using sliding-mode control (SMC) with the self-triggering strategy. In self/event-triggering, the control is not updated in a periodic manner like in classical sampled-date system. The SMC with self-triggering mechanism achieves robust stability with increased control execution time period. In comparison to an event-triggering, the self-triggering technique does not require additional dedicated hardware for continuous state measurement to determine the next possible triggering instant. Here, a strategy is developed to find the next possible triggering instant using past sampled state information only and guaranteed that even in the presence of disturbance the closed-loop system is stable. It has been shown that the system performance is improved in terms of the number of the control updates and hence the control execution requires less resource. The numerical simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2015.

Self-triggering-based sliding-mode control for linear systems

This paper studies a problem of selecting a right set of driver nodes of multiple input multi-agent system (MAS) subject to actuator saturation. A controllable multi-agent system can be driven from any initial state to any desired state using a set of driver nodes. For many systems, a set of driver nodes to control the multi-agent system is not unique. It is important to characterize this set of driver nodes and select the right set of driver nodes. The work discusses theory and algorithms to select a set of driver nodes. The selection of a particular set as a driver set is based on region of attraction associated with a particular set. The set is selected such that largest region of attraction can be obtained. A multiple-input multi-agent system which can be controllable using a set of driver nodes is considered. Nonuniqueness of the set of driver nodes poses a challenge to select a right set of driver nodes. The work addresses this issue. The presented algorithms are illustrated through examples. © 2015 IEEE.

Algorithms to select right driver nodes for multi-agent systems

The paper presents a robust sliding mode controller for a dc/dc, bidirectional converter interfacing storage unit to ensure dc bus voltage regulation in a stand-alone dc microgrid. The dc bus supplies a combination of a constant power load and conventional resistive load. In order to enhance the battery life, a state-of-charge based charging algorithm is also implemented. Depending on the measured dc bus voltage, the controller selects the appropriate operating mode of the converter. The effectiveness of the proposed controller has been validated through simulation results. © 2015 IEEE.

DC bus voltage regulation in the presence of constant power load using sliding mode controlled DC-DC Bi-directional converter interfaced storage unit

Dynamic range compression (or tone mapping) of HDR content is an essential step towards rendering it on traditional LDR displays in a meaningful way. This is however non-trivial and one of the reasons is that tone mapping operators (TMOs) usually need content-specific parameters to achieve the said goal. While subjective TMO parameter adjustment is the most accurate, it may not be easily deployable in many practical applications. Its subjective nature can also influence the comparison of different operators. Thus, there is a need for objective TMO parameter selection to automate the rendering process. To that end, we investigate into a new objective method for TMO parameters optimization. Our method is based on quantification of contrast reversal and naturalness. As an important advantage, it does not require any prior knowledge about the input HDR image and works independently on the used TMO. Experimental results using a variety of HDR images and several popular TMOs demonstrate the value of our method in comparison to default TMO parameter settings. © 2015 SPIE.

Rendering of HDR content on LDR displays: An objective approach

Traditional capture and display devices can only support a limited dynamic range (contrast) and color gamut given the hardware limitations. As a result, the real physical luminance present in a natural scene cannot be captured by these. However, with the recent advancements in the related software and hardware technologies, it is now possible to capture or reproduce higher contrast and luminance ranges. Such scene-referred visual signals are known as high dynamic range (HDR) signals. They are visually more appealing because they can represent the dynamic range of the visual stimuli present in the real world more accurately. Not surprisingly, the emergence of HDR is seen as an important step towards improving the visual quality of experience (QoE) of the end users. However, HDR comes with its own set of challenges including capture, storage, processing, display, and so on. This chapter focuses on some of those issues from a QoE viewpoint. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

High dynamic range visual quality of experience measurement: Challenges and perspectives

This work presents new compact models that capture advanced physical effects presented in industry FinFETs. The presented models are introduced into the industry standard compact model BSIM-CMG. The core model is updated with a new unified FinFET model, which calculates charges and currents of transistors with complex fin cross-sections. In addition, threshold voltage modulation from bulk-bias effects and bias dependent quantum mechanical confinement effects are incorporated into the new core model. Short channel effects, affecting threshold voltage and subhtreshold swing, are modeled with a new unified field penetration length, enabling accurate 14nm node FinFET modeling. The new proposed models further assure the BSIM-CMG model's capabilities for circuit design using FinFET transistors for advanced technology nodes. © 2015 IEEE.

BSIM-CMG: Standard FinFET compact model for advanced circuit design

In this work, we have modeled the impact of substrate depletion in fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) transistor and have extensively verified the model for both NMOS and PMOS with geometrical and temperature scaling. The model has an accurate behavior for C-V and I-V characteristics and preserves the smooth behavior of the high order derivatives. Model validation is done at 50 nm technology node with state of the art FDSOI transistors provided by Low-power Electronics Association and Project (LEAP) and excellent agreement with the experimental data is achieved after parameter extraction. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Modeling the impact of substrate depletion in FDSOI MOSFETs

This paper deals to find the dynamic response of load frequency and corresponding tie-line power of an automatic generation control (AGC) in four area interconnected thermal power system by using two different technique (Controller); One is Intelligent (Fuzzy Logic Controller) technique and second is Evolutionary (GA for tuning of PID Controller) Technique. In this paper evolutionary technique are proposed for improving the performance of load frequency and tie-line power and their dynamic responses are compared with the intelligent controller’s responses. The results indicate that the proposed controller exhibit better performance and satisfy the automatic generation control requirements with a reasonable dynamic response. Automatic generation control in four area interconnected power system of thermal generating unit through evolutionary technique

Recently, a lot of bilateral and non-local means based reconstruction algorithms are proposed in literature. The success of these filters lies in finding similar patches in the neighbourhood. However, in complex regions and in presence of noise, finding similar patches based on mean square error (MSE) is not reliable. This results into blurred edges and visible patches in the reconstructed image. To address this issue, we propose a new Observation model based and Perceptually Motivated Bilateral Filter (OPBIF) for Image Reconstruction. In which image quality assessment (IQA) matrices are used to find the similarity among the patches. From experimental results, it is validated that the proposed algorithm has the capability of reconstructing sharp edges, as compared to existing non-linear filtering algorithms. © 2015 IEEE.
