Using a kinematic approach we show that the non-adiabatic, non-cyclic, geometric phase corresponding to the radiation emitted by a three level cascade system provides a sensitive diagnostic tool for determining the entanglement properties of the two modes of radiation. The nonunitary, noncyclic path in the state space may be realized through the same control parameters which control the purity/mixedness and entanglement. We show analytically that the geometric phase is related to concurrence in certain region of the parameter space. We further show that the rate of change of the geometric phase reveals its resilience to fluctuations only for pure Bell type states. Lastly, the derivative of the geometric phase carries information on both purity/mixedness and entanglement/separability. © EDP Sciences, Società Italiana di Fisica, Springer-Verlag 2012.

Geometric phase: An indicator of entanglement

The work is primarily concerned with the development of nanocrystalline Nd-Fe-B, based permanent magnet with high Curie temperature. An alloy of composition Fe81Nd7Al2B10 has been prepared using vacuum arc furnace and subjected to using Melt-Spinning process for preparation of amorphous flakes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been performed to determine the crystallization temperature and activation energy of the melt spun amorphous ribbons. Subsequently the melt spun ribbon was subjected to annealing at below and above the crystallization temperatures to identify effect of Al on the Curie temperature. It was noteworthy for the effect of alloying Al above crystallization temperature. The Curie temperature increases to by almost 1.3 times with increase in annealing temperature. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Crystallization behavior and curie temperature properties of Al doped Nd-Fe-B based nanocomposite permanent magnet

A Giant Magneto-Impedance (GMI) based electromagnetic sensing device has been designed and developed using a nanostructured CoFeSiB microwire as sensing core element. The sensor consists of three segments, (i) signal generation and amplification unit, (ii) transducer with the bridge circuit and (iii) the detection circuit. The sensor output voltage is directly correlated to hardness variation in heat-treated 9Cr-1Mo steel and martensite volume fraction in the deformed 304 SS austenitic stainless steel. The amplitude of GMI voltage in defective welded pipe has also been investigated. The present study indicated that the developed GMI sensor can be applicable for structural health monitoring of service exposed engineering components. © 2012 IEEE.

Development of a GMI sensor for evaluating microstructural degradation in ferromagnetic materials

An electromagnetic sensing device has been developed suitable for measurement of magnetic hysteresis loop (MHL) and Magnetic Barkhausen Emissions (MBE) parameters in a non-destructive way. The system is capable of magnetizing the test sample within the frequency range of 50mHz to 200Hz and has the option of band pass filter with the range of 30kHz to 300kHz for measuring Barkhausen emissions. The system has been demonstrated to evaluate the microstructural character of steel used in super-heater of thermal power plant and has the capability of structural health monitoring of engineering components. © 2012 IEEE.

An electromagnetic sensing device for microstructural phase determination of steels through non-destructive evaluation

The effect of annealing on melt spun Ni55Mn22Ga 23 (at. ) ribbon has been addressed in terms of structural, thermal, thermomagnetic, and magnetic field induced strain (MFIS) behaviour. In comparison to as-spun ribbons, the samples annealed within the L21 domain at 1073 K for 30 h with subsequent furnace cooling, showed a rise in martensitic transformation temperature. This was endorsed from electron microscopy studies revealing change in morphology of martensite plate and stacking of dislocations in a preferential orientation. The mechanism is associated to martensitic accommodation which enhanced ferro-elastic magnetic coupling and also lowered magnetic coercivity. Such accommodations and adaptive anisotropy improved the MFIS behavior in the annealed sample. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Heat treatment induced martensitic accommodation and adaptive anisotropy in melt spun Ni55Mn22Ga23 (at. ) ribbons

We present initial results of the direct observation of the signature of localized light in an ultrafast laser-inscribed (ULI) disordered lattice that contains an array of evanescently coupled, one-dimensional optical waveguides in glass in which certain amount of disorder in refractive index was introduced. Numerical simulations were carried out to test the feasibility of the initial experimental design. Such configurable ULI disordered waveguide lattices should open up a platform for investigating the phenomenon of transverse localization of light and its statistical nature. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Ultrafast laser inscribed waveguide lattice in glass for direct observation of transverse localization of light

We report the generation of a new wavelength at 4.3 μm by a meter long As2S3-based microstructured optical fiber exploiting FWM. A peak gain of 37 dB with FWHM below 3 nm is achieved. © OSA 2012.

Dye-sensitized Solar Cell Based on Natural Dyes

This paper presents experimental studies for the production and propagation of an electron beam from a single gap pseudospark discharge based plasma cathode electron (PCE) gun. The generated electron beam has been successfully propagated for more than 25 cm in a gaseous environment without application of external guiding magnetic field at different operating conditions. The electron beam losses due to recombination with ions and collision with walls of drift space have been estimated. The electron beam profile has also been analyzed in the drift region of the gun. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
