The presented study intends to analyze the microstructure and corresponding mechanical characteristics of P91 and Incoloy 800HT dissimilar welded joint (DWJ). The thermo-physical property differences between P91 and Incoloy 800HT arise due to their complex alloying composition, making their weldability difficult. Incoloy 800HT is difficult to weld due to its high susceptibility to solidification cracking. The recommended nickel-based filler metals for welding Incoloy 800HT were employed to weld P91 and Incoloy 800HT using conventional gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The welded joint morphology and characteristics were analyzed in as-welded (AW) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions. The PWHT was performed to observe changes in microstructural inhomogeneity and residual stress relaxation in weld after the heat treatment. An electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) was utilized to observe the distribution and segregation of elements in different weld regions. The deep hole drill technique was employed to find the distribution of bi-axial residual stresses in the weld fusion zone (WFZ) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of base metals in both AW and PWHT conditions. The two nickel-based fillers, ERNiCr-3 and ERNiCrMo-3, were employed, and their weld characteristics were compared. The mechanical strength of ERNiCr-3 filler-based DWJ was found superior to ERNiCrMo-3 filler-based DWJ. The standard AW and PWHT ERNiCr-3 filler-based DWJ tensile specimen failed from Incoloy 800HT base metal with an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 570 ± 4 MPa and 650 ± 4 MPa, respectively. The ERNiCrMo-3 filler-based DWJ obtained the highest UTS of 679 MPa after PWHT in a subsize specimen. The microhardness for ERNiCrMo-3 WFZ was found to be higher than ERNiCr-3 WFZ microhardness, and PWHT successfully tempered the P91 HAZ. Further, the impact toughness for the ERNiCr-3 WFZ in AW condition was 86 ± 3 J and PWHT did not provide any significant improvements, while ERNiCrMo-3 WFZ had an impact toughness of 47 ± 10 J in AW state and 41 ± 10 J in PWHT state. Thus, a successful weld characteristic study of defect-free P91 and Incoloy 800HT DWJ was completed, and ERNiCr-3 filler was concluded to be an optimum choice of filler to make the DWJ between P91 and Incoloy 800HT. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Dissimilar joining of the martensitic grade P91 and Incoloy 800HT alloy for AUSC boiler application: Microstructure, mechanical properties and residual stresses

This physical weld simulation study deals with the coarse grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) region's microstructure and the mechanical properties of naval bainitic steel after multi-pass welding. A welding thermal physical simulation experiment has been carried out by simulating different subzones (temperature range between 1100ý and 600 °C) in reheated coarse-grained heat-affected regions. The weld thermal cycles were tested between these temperature ranges using a thermo-mechanical simulator Gleeble®3800. The fixed low heat input 15 kJ/mm was used. The hardness, impact toughness at −50 °C, and notched tensile properties of the sub-CGHAZ regions were tested, and average results are reported. The altered CGHAZ microstructures were analyzed through optical microscopy, SEM, and TEM facility. This CGHAZ microstructure consisted of granular bainite, martensite, bainitic ferrite, and martensite austenite (M/A) islands, while base metal steel consisted of tempered bainite and martensite, and M/A islands. The first-pass CGHAZ region's mechanical properties were found worst due to coarse microstructure, whereas improved mechanical properties were obtained after the subsequent pass (second pass). The improvement in mechanical properties of sub-CGHAZ regions was attributed to the microstructure of soft granular bainite, shorter length and coarser width of bainitic ferrite, soft M/A islands, and carbides as well as changes in prior austenite grain size. The correlation between CGHAZ structure and mechanical properties is established in detail. © 2021, ASM International.

Impact of Subsequent Pass Weld Thermal Cycles on First-Pass Coarse Grain Heat-Affected Zone’s Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Naval Bainitic Steel

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a non-traditional welding technique used to join similar and dissimilar materials that are difficult to join using fusion techniques. Furthermore, when compared to traditional welding, this type of welding is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Tool probes have a significant impact on the mechanical and microstructural properties of metallic joints in FSW. In this work, different probe profiles such as straight cylindrical, straight threaded, and straight hexagon (SH) are used to join the AA5083 aluminum alloy plates. Mechanical and microstructural characterization of welded plates is performed using various probe profiles. When the plates are welded using a straight hexagonal (SH) probe profile and process parameters such as tool rotational speed of 1200 rpm, tool transverse speed of 40 mm/min, and tool tilt angle of 1°, mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, percentage of elongation (EI %), and hardness are significantly improved. The electron backscatter diffraction analysis was carried out to know about the microstructural changes that are the cause of the mechanical property alteration. Analysis reveals that the nugget zone (NZ) exhibits recrystallized fine grains with an equiaxed structure as a result of dynamic recrystallization (DRX). In NZ, a high proportion of high angle grain boundaries are found, resulting in improved mechanical properties of the joint. © 2022, ASM International.

Influence of Tool Probe Profiles on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Underwater Friction Stir Welded AA5083 Material

This paper reviews the various fabrication methodologies explored for the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based nanocomposites along with their applications in gas sensing and other associated domains. PDMS is well known polymer for its biocompatibility, durability, transparency, and adoptability to any size and shape via replication technique. Envisioning its potential and prospects in flexible device realization, this review discusses various methods used by researchers to develop PDMS-based nanocomposites and approaches to improve their functional properties along with their associated applications. Recent trends of silicon elastomer-based nanocomposites and their sensing applications

The 9% Cr steels were developed for ultra-supercritical (USC) power plants to meet the requirements of high operating temperature and pressure. These steels are produced to operate at high temperatures where impact toughness is not a concern; however, it becomes important for the welded joints to have good impact toughness at room temperature for manufacturing. The present work investigates the effect of the post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) parameters, i.e., temperature and time, on the impact toughness of multi-pass gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) joints of ferritic/martensitic grade P92 steel. The microstructural evolution in welded joints given varying post-weld temperatures and times was studied. The lath martensitic structure of the weld metal for the as-welded joints resulted in high hardness and low impact toughness. The weld fusion zone toughness was 12 J, which was lower than the minimum specified values of 41 J (ASME standards) and 47 J (EN ISO 3580:2017). The PWHT temperature and time were found to have a significant effect on the impact toughness of the weld metal. A drastic increase in the impact toughness of the weld metal was noticed, which was attributed to lath break-up, reduction in dislocation density and reduction in solid solution hardening. The maximum impact toughness of 124 J was measured for PWHT temperature and time of 760◦C and 120 min, respectively. The effect of PWHT parameters on tensile strength was also investigated, and test results showed that the joint was safe for USC boiler application as it failed from the region of the P92 base metal. The variation in microstructural evolution along the weldments resulted in hardness variation. PWHT led to homogeneity in microstructure and, ultimately, reduction in hardness value. According to the study, the optimum temperature and time for PWHT of a GTAW joint of P92 steel were found to be 760◦C and 120 min, respectively. © 2022 by the authors. Influence of PWHT Parameters on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Behavior of Multi-Pass GTAW Joints of P92 Steel

Hard-magnetic soft materials belong to a class of the highly deformable magneto-active elastomer family of smart materials and provide a promising technology for flexible electronics, soft robots, and functional metamaterials. When hard-magnetic soft actuators are driven by a multiple-step input signal (Heaviside magnetic field signal), the residual oscillations exhibited by the actuator about equilibrium positions may limit their performance and accuracy in practical applications. This work aims at developing a command-shaping scheme for alleviating residual vibrations in a magnetically driven planar hard-magnetic soft actuator. The control scheme is based on the balance of magnetic and elastic forces at a critical point in an oscillation cycle. The equation governing the dynamics of the actuator is devised using the Euler–Lagrange equation. The constitutive behaviour of the hard-magnetic soft material is modeled using the Gent model of hyperelasticity, which accounts for the strain-stiffening effects. The dynamic response of the actuator under a step input signal is obtained by numerically solving the devised dynamic governing equation using MATLAB ODE solver. To demonstrate the applicability of the developed command-shaping scheme, a thorough investigation showing the effect of various parameters such as material damping, the sequence of desired equilibrium positions, and polymer chain extensibility on the performance of the proposed scheme is performed. The designed control scheme is found to be effective in controlling the motion of the hard-magnetic soft actuator at any desired equilibrium position. The present study can find its potential application in the design and development of an open-loop controller for hard-magnetic soft actuators. © 2022 by the authors.

The Cr–Mo steel containing 9% Cr is generally preferred in producing high-temperature operating components (lower than 620 °C) like steam pipes and headers due to their outstanding combination of elevated temperature mechanical properties and creep strength. The components with an operating temperature of more than 620 °C (superheater and reheaters tubes) are mainly produced using stainless steel or Ni-based superalloy. Hence due to economic aspects of boilers, joining of P92 steel with Ni-based superalloy is inevitable in advanced ultra-supercritical (AUSC) plants. Thus the development of joining technology without diminishing the high-temperature mechanical properties of the weldments becomes essential. The present work introduces the microstructure evolution in gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) dissimilar joint of P92 steel and Inconel 617 alloy produced by using the P92 filler. The microstructure study along weldments was examined using an optical microscope (OM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The mechanical properties of welded joint and joint integrity were determined by using the microhardness measurement, cross-weld tensile tests, and impact toughness test. The effect of the post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on mechanical properties and microstructure evolution was also performed. The residual stresses were also examined using the blind hole drilling methods, and the effect of PWHT on the nature and magnitude of the residual stresses were also conducted. The microstructure observation showed the martensitic lath structure in the weld metal, which resulted in poor impact toughness (36 ± 5 J) and high hardness (458 ± 25 HV) of weld metal in the as-welded condition. A considerable increase in impact toughness (90 ± 4 J) and a decrease in hardness (371 ± 11 HV) of weld metal were observed after the PWHT. A wide region of the unmixed zone at the interface of weld metal and Inconel 617 was formed due to the difference in chemical composition and structure. The unmixed zone formation led to the poor tensile properties of the welded joint, and failure was observed both in P92 BM and at the interface of weld metal and Inconel 617 interface. The tensile tested sample failed from the interface region and showed the presence of Ti(C, N) particles, while secondary phase M23C6 particles were obtained from the tensile sample fractured from P92 BM. The impact test results also showed the variation in impact toughness along the weldments. The P92 BM was found the strongest zone, while weld metal was noticed as the weakest zone in terms of impact toughness. The variation in residual stresses was also measured along with the thickness of the plate, and the peak magnitude of the residual stresses was measured in the capping pass, which was compressive in nature. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Some studies on dissimilar welds joint P92 steel and Inconel 617 alloy for AUSC power plant application

In the present research work, an effort has been made to examine the effect of the ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler on solidification mechanism, microstructural characterization, welded joint integrity, and residual stresses of the dissimilar welded joint (DWJ) of martensitic grade P92 steel and Ni-based superalloy Inconel 617 for advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power plant application. Weld joints have been fabricated for V groove geometry by using the multipass gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The multiple aspects of the welded joint structural integrity have been tested by performing the tensile test, microhardness tests and Charpy impact test. The ERNiCrCoMo-1 weld solidified in austenitic mode with columnar and cellular dendrites in the interior region, while columnar dendrites were observed near the interface region. The unmixed zone (UZ) formation was noticed at the ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler weld and P92 steel interface, while the UZ gets eliminated at Inconel 617 interface. The microstructural observation near the interface showed that migrated grain boundaries were observed frequently near the lower region of the weld metal (WM), while at the interface of the P92 steel and ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler welds, higher density of soft δ ferrite patches for the capping and backing passes were observed. The energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed the presence of the Cr- and Mo-enriched M23C6 precipitates, Mo-enriched M6C and Ti-enriched Ti(C, N) precipitates in the WM. Acceptable mechanical properties were obtained at room temperature. The Charpy impact toughness (CIT) was observed 98 ± 5 J and 108 ± 3 J for WM with V notch at the top and root region, respectively. The dramatic reduction in CIT was after the postweld heat treatment (PWHT) was attributed to the evolution of the carbide particles in interdendritic areas. Tensile strength results of the cross-weld specimen showed the tensile strength value marginally lower than the P92 steel but significantly lower than the Inconel 617 base metal in both as-welded (AW) and PWHT condition along with fracture in the week region of P92 steel. The failure from the region of P92 steel instead of the ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler WM confirmed that the welded joint was safe for A-USC power plants boiler application. A significant heterogeneity in microhardness was seen along the weldments with a peak hardness of 445 ± 8 in P92 CGHAZ and a lower hardness of 181 HV in the peninsula. The increase in microhardness of the WM as a result of PWHT was attributed to the evolution of the carbide particles in the WM. Through thickness residual stresses variation was also measured for both WM and HAZ region and the effect of the PWHT on the magnitude and nature of the residual stresses were also performed. Hence the work provides insight into welding procedure development, microstructural evolution in the WM and HAZ, variation in mechanical properties, and residual stresses variation for the welded joint of P92 steel and Inconel 617 alloy. © 2022, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International.
