Pilgrimage is an important aspect of our life and has both religious as well as spiritual significance. The present study examined the relationship of religiosity, happiness and satisfaction with life in the case of pilgrims in a very special cultural context of the Ardh-Kumbh Mela (held in Prayag, Allahabad, India) during the months of January and February, 2007). The study specifically examined these relationships in a sample of Kalpvasis (pilgrims who stay at the banks of the Sangam for a month in the holy city of Prayag during the Mela period). One hundred and fifty-four Kalpvasis participated in the study. Positive association between religiosity, happiness and life satisfaction was obtained. Results showed that gender did not have a significant role on these relations in the case of pilgrims. Psychological well-being and pilgrimage: Religiosity, happiness and life satisfaction of Ardh-Kumbh Mela pilgrims (Kalpvasis) at Prayag, India: SHORT NOTES

This paper examines the case of a recent H5N1virus (avian influenza) outbreak in West Bengal, an eastern state of India, and argues that poorly executed pandemic management may be viewed as a moral lapse. It further argues that pandemic management initiatives are intimately related to the concept of health as a social 'good' and to the moral responsibility of protection from foreseeable social harm from an infectious disease. The initiatives, therefore, have to be guided by special moral obligations towards biorisk reduction, obligations which remain unfulfilled when a public body entrusted with the responsibility fails to manage satisfactorily the prevention and control of the infection. The overall conclusion is that pandemic management has a moral dimension. The gravity of the threat that fatal infectious diseases pose for public health creates special moral obligations for public bodies in pandemic situations. However, the paper views the West Bengal case as a learning opportunity, and considers the lapses cited as challenges that better, more effectively conducted pandemic management can prepare for. It is hoped that this paper will provoke constructive bioethical deliberations, particularly pertinent to the developing world, on how to ensure that the obligations towards health are fulfilled ethically and more effectively. © 2008 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Swaminarayan Hinduism (founded by Swami Sahajanand) is a modern form of Hinduism that was floated in early 19th century Gujarat. In fact, Swaminarayan movement is a Gujarati form of Vaishnavism and wherever it exists outside of Gujarat, is the religion of Gujaratis. Globally the convergence of religious identity with cultural and linguistic associations is a most important aspect of the transmission of the tradition, and that is exactly what Swaminarayan movement has done by building a bridge of faith, so integral to Gujarati Diaspora. Swaminarayan Hinduism is a powerful agent in preservation of Gujarati ethnic identity, linguistic and regional ties around the globe; it has stressed the union of regional-linguistic identity, by clubbing the use of Gujarati language, dress, music, dance, cuisine, art. Thus Swaminarayan Hinduism is a sectarian group which overlaps the regional-linguistic aspect and this has been highlighted in this paper, along with reasons for the success of this movement in Gujarati diaspora. © Serials Publications.

Recent literature shows that ethics of care can be used as a theoretical basis to add a new, important dimension to social issues. This paper argues for a similar extension of the theoretical support from ethics of care to an area in bioethics. Specifically, it contends that a justification based ethics of care can be constructed to argue for a moral obligation to give some priority in the HIV-related initiatives to one of most vulnerable groups; namely, the rural women in India. In an epidemic situation this care-based approach has certain advantages as a moral justification over the usual traditional approaches. © 2006 The Author.
