Ecocultural Ethics: Critical Essays

Several psychological theories and models of wisdom have been developed. Despite converging trend from different theories and models in the understanding of wisdom, intervention plans or attempts to facilitate wisdom have been meager. In this study, different components of the MORE Life Experience Model of Wisdom were taken as intervention targets, and these components were targeted through mindfulness training, journal writing, narrative simulation, and case discussion on leadership virtues. The basic purpose was to seek the answer for the possibility of development of wisdom in individuals by testing MORE model and we plan to answer this by fulfilling two aims: first, to find empirical support for the MORE life experience model, we wanted to see whether MORE components predict participants’ self-rated wisdom scores; and second, to use this model as an intervention tool to foster wisdom. Intervention, lasted for 18 weeks, was done among 160 students (age range 19–22 years) enrolled for “leadership” course. Complete data were obtained from 108 participants. Result suggests Habitual Action (β = 0.24, p < 0.05), Personal Mastery (β = 0.24, p < 0.05), and Suppression (β = 0.20, p < 0.05) predicted Cognitive Wisdom; Personal Mastery (β = 0.34, p < 0.001; β = 0.43, p < 0.01) and Mindfulness (β = 0.23, p < 0.05; β = 0.26, p < 0.05) predicted Affective and Reflective Wisdom; and composite wisdom was predicted by Mindfulness (β = 0.33, p < 0.001) and Reappraisal (β = 0.24, p < 0.01). After intervention there were changes in Suppression (d = 0.34) and Habitual Action (d = 0.26). The study concluded with an affirmation to the conviction that wisdom may be amenable to the intervention. © 2017 The Author(s). Can wisdom be fostered: Time to test the model of wisdom

Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are essential link to healthy communities in resource-constrained environments. However, they are insufficiently trained to solve community health challenges. In this paper, we present Pragati - a mobile-based Virtual Reality (VR) platform to train and educate ASHAs in rural Assam, India. Mobile based VR platform was chosen due to its ability to increase focus, attention and learnability among users. We developed 3 modules on maternal and child healthcare. Modules were presented via audio-visual interface in local Assamesse language. This paper presents the design of Pragati, user interactions, technology implementations and future directions of our study. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2017.

Pragati - A mobile based virtual reality (VR) platform to train and educate community health workers

Since the inception of the intersectionality framework by feminists over three decades ago, scholars have advanced the analysis and subsequent understanding of peoples' social locations, identity constructions, and systems of oppression involving gender, ethnicity, religion, class, and caste, to name a few. Considering these axes of differentiation as mutually constitutive rather than only as individual factors has been the single most important innovation. However, intersectionality has yet to reach its potential theoretically, methodologically, and practically. For instance, the framework is rarely applied to social phenomena that extend beyond the confines of a given nation-state. In previous publications, we have addressed this shortcoming by arguing for applying intersectionality across multiple social scales (intimate, regional, national, and transnational). We have shown how any given person's intersectionality can and often does shift according to the scale of analysis. In this article, we address another important way to strengthen intersectionality-bringing in polyvocality. That is, and drawing upon arguments originally made in postmodern critiques of "writing culture", publications tend to reflect partial and/or limited perspectives, typically those reflecting researchers' privileged, authoritative accounts. In this article, in contrast, we include different insider (ego) and outsider (ego's relatives' and the researchers') perspectives. The article includes the theoretical and methodological argument for adding polyvocality to intersectionality and then applies the proposed model to an ethnographic case. We illustrate how intersectional constellations shift from voiced interpretation to voiced interpretation and, in so doing, deepen, expand, and problematize these same analyses. © 2016 by the author.

Enhancing intersectional analyses with polyvocality: Making and illustrating the model

Emotions are a major part of our subjective experiences of the world. At times, our emotions are not appropriate and require active management. Emotion regulation refers to the various ways of managing or controlling emotional responses. External stimuli play specific role in electing emotions. Pictures and movies elicit emotions and emotional effects of films are believed to exceed that of pictures. The aim of the present study is to compare the effectiveness of emotion regulation strategies across emotion induction method (picture and films). Forty participants rated their emotion on Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) ratings for each pictorial and video stimuli while following the emotion regulation instructions. Repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed that the pictures were more effective in modulating emotions. Cognitive reappraisal and distraction strategies downregulated emotions. © 2018, PsychOpen. Salaam bollywood: Introduction

Conventionally, the focus of history writing is ‘public’ lives and ‘public’ events. Maharaja Kumari Binodini Devi’s Boro Sahib Ongbi Sanatombi (The princess and the political agent, 1976), however, inverts this dominant tradition, diverting the attention of the reader from the larger ‘public’ events in Manipur’s history to a very specific and ‘private’ love relationship between her aunt Maharaja Kumari Sanatombi Devi and Major Horatio St. John Maxwell, the first political agent of British-occupied Manipur. This paper shows how the liminal form of Binodini’s book allows it to become a site for contestation and negotiation between public and private histories as it simultaneously confuses the line between history and fiction. To prove its point, it reveals first the blurring of the line between history and fiction in Boro Sahib Ongbi Sanatombi, and then demonstrates the relation between public and private histories in the book. Finally, the paper analyses the public–private (histories) distinction in a colonial relationship as illustrated in the book. © 2016, © 2016 SAGE Publications.

Fiction or History in the Making of the Past: A Dialogue between the Public and the Private in Maharaja Kumari Binodini Devi’s Boro Sahib Ongbi Sanatombi (The Princess and the Political Agent)

The installed power capacity of grid-connected wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) has increased exponentially around the world. The size of each unit is also increasing as they are becoming more affordable. The grid is a highly non-linear system due to wide spread use of power electronically switched loads and devices. Hence, the grid disturbances affect the output of the WECSs. This paper presents a study of the effects of grid disturbances such as switching of loads, feeder tripping, outage and synchronization of conventional generators on the output parameters of the grid-connected wind generators. The voltage, current and power of wind generator at the point of common coupling have been analysed. Further, presence of disturbances has also been investigated using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The results are validated using a 1.5 MW doubly fed induction generator based wind energy conversion system integrated with a test system in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
