Electroplating on dielectric is used to realize continuous metallic side walls of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). Thus the complexity of fabricating chain of metallic via using precise mechanical or laser drilling used in conventional SIW fabrication is avoided. To show effectiveness of the procedure, a single cavity dual-mode bandpass filter is designed and fabricated. A modified corner cut configuration, compatible with the via less fabrication technology, is used to obtain the dual-mode operation. The bandpass filter with microstrip lines as the external feed lines offers two transmission zeroes which is symmetrically placed on both sides of the passband. The filter has a fractional bandwidth of 5% at a center frequency 10 GHz. © 2015 IEEE.

Dual-mode bandpass filter using via less substrate integrated waveguide technology

In this letter, compact substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) power dividers are presented. Both equal and unequal power divisions are considered. A quarter-wavelength long wedge shape SIW structure is used for the power division. Direct coaxial feed is used for the input port and SIW-to-microstrip transitions are used for the output ports. Four-way equal, unequal and an eight-way equal division power dividers are presented. The four-way and the eight-way power dividers provide -10 dB input matching bandwidth of 39.3% and 13%, respectively, at the design frequency f0= 2.4 GHz. The main advantage of the power dividers is their compact sizes. Including the microstrip to SIW transitions, size is reduced by at least 46% compared to other reported miniaturized SIW power dividers. © 2016 IEEE.

Miniaturized Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) Power Dividers

The Synchronous machine angle and speed variables availability give us an exact picture of the overall condition of power system networks leading therefore to an improved situational cognizance by system operators. As the enlargement of power systems continue, the challenge of real time monitoring and its control gets bigger. All significant network parameters are measured at various points on the system and that collected data transferred to the control center, where the data is used for Estimation Process through various Energy Management System (EMS) functions. Accuracy is directly dependent upon the data collected through Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) with their underlying high veracity and the unique ability to evaluate the voltage angles, offers an advantage in improving the overall accuracy. This paper compares the performance of four filtering approaches in estimating dynamic states of a power system network using PMU data. The five methods are extended Kalman filter (EKF), unscented Kalman filter (UKF), Particle Filter (PF), and Enhanced unscented Kalman filter. The statistical performance of each algorithm is compared using IEEE 30 and IEEE 14 bus test system. Under the statistical framework, Efficiency of Interpolation, Sensitivity of the missing data with computation time are evaluated and compared for each approach. According to the comparison, this paper makes some recommendations for the proper use of the methods. © 2016 IEEE.

Power system state estimation comparison of Kalman filters with a new approach

The rate-reliability-complexity limits of a quasi-static K-user multiple access channel (MAC), with or without feedback, are explored in this paper. Using high-SNR asymptotics, bounds on the computational resources required to achieve near-optimal (ML-based) decoding performance are first derived. They, in turn, yield bounds on the (reduced) complexity needed to achieve any (including suboptimal) diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) performance. Similar complexity-bounds in the presence of feedback-aided user selection are also given. This latter effort reveals the ability of a few bits of feedback not only to improve performance, but also to reduce complexity. In this context, our analysis reveals the interesting finding that a proper calibration of user selection can allow for near-optimal ML-based decoding, with complexity that need not scale exponentially in the total number of codeword bits. The derived bounds constitute the best known performance-versus-complexity behavior to date for ML-based MAC decoding, as well as a first exploration of the complexity-feedback-performance interdependencies in multiuser settings.

Performance-Complexity Analysis for MAC ML-Based Decoding with User Selection

Light is a mixture of multiple spectral components. An image is a response of the scene with respect to these spectra. Principal components are more compact representation of the data compared to any other representations. Hence accuracy of the estimated defocus parameter is higher in principal component representation than any other customary used representations. In this paper, we present comparison between principal component representation and customary gray scale representation for depth map creation. The presented results shows that the depth maps obtained using principal component are smoother than depth maps obtained using gray scale representation. Besides that, the noise estimation using principal components is much more accurate than using Wiener strategy. © 2015 IEEE.

Defocus map estimation from a single image using principal components

Unit commitment (UC) problem on a large scale with the ramp rate and prohibited zone constraints is a very complicated nonlinear optimization problem with huge number of constraints. This paper presents a new hybrid approach of 'Gaussian Harmony Search' (GHS) and 'Jumping Gene Transposition' (JGT) algorithm (GHS-JGT) for UC problem. In this proposed hybrid GHS-JGT for UC problem, scheduling variables are handled in binary form and other constants directly through optimum conditions in decimal form. The efficiency of this method is tested on ten units, forty units and hundred units test system. Simulation results obtained by GHS-JGT algorithm for each case show a better generation cost in less time interval, in comparison to the other existing results. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A solution to the ramp rate and prohibited operating zone constrained unit commitment by GHS-JGT evolutionary algorithm

This paper introduces a single sensor based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategy for solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed battery charging by using normal harmonic search (NHS) algorithm. The NHS algorithm is an improved version of the harmony search, which is inspired to the music composition technique and its searching ability is improved by using the normal probability distribution factor. Therefore, NHS reaches the global maximum point (GMP) very quickly and found suitable for online searching. In this work, the objective of the NHS algorithm is, the maximum extraction of the power from a PV array and efficiently charging the battery through maximizing the charging current of the battery. Due to the single sensor, the cost of the MPPT is reduced, as well as the algorithm complexity and computational burden are very less, so it can be easily implemented on the low-cost microcontroller. Here, a single current sensor based battery charging by NHS algorithm is tested on MATLAB simulation and verified on a developed prototype of the PV system. The satisfactory steady-state and dynamic performances of the NHS algorithm is obtained for a single current sensor based battery charging, under variable irradiance and temperature. © 2016 IEEE.

Harmony Search with Wavelet Mutation evolutionary approach for ramp rate constrained unit commitment

Recently utilities are continuously seeking cost-effective and accurate power quality (PQ) improvement techniques in order to achieve customer satisfaction. This paper intends to provide a comprehensive review on the status of topological aspects of techniques used to improve the power quality in distribution network for the researchers, designers and engineers working in this area. This review helps to select a PQ improvement technique that suits a specific application in terms of technical and economical aspects. Topological aspects of power quality improvement techniques: A comprehensive overview

The distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) provides fast control of active and reactive powers to enable load compensation, harmonics current elimination, voltage flicker mitigation, voltage and frequency regulation. This paper presents power quality improvement technique in the presence of grid disturbances and wind energy penetration using DSTATCOM with battery energy storage system. DSTATCOM control is provided based on synchronous reference frame theory. A modified IEEE 13 bus test feeder with DSTATCOM and wind generator is used for the study. Power quality events during grid disturbances such as feeder tripping and re-closing, voltage sag, swell and load switching have been studied in association with DSTATCOM. The power quality disturbances due to wind generator outage, synchronization and wind speed variations have also been investigated. The study has been carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the simulation results are compared with real time results obtained by the use of real time digital simulator (RTDS) for validating the effectiveness of proposed methodology. The proposed method has been proved to be effective in improvement of power quality with all disturbances stated above. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
