We propose a novel method to eliminate the lock-in in a Semiconductor Fiber Ring Laser Gyroscope by orthogonally polarizing the counter-traveling waves in the ring cavity. Orthogonal polarization reduces the coupling between the waves which prevents them from locking. © 2015 IEEE.

Lock-in elimination by orthogonal polarization in semiconductor Ring Laser Gyroscope

Cell sorting and separation are considered to be very crucial preparatory steps for numerous clinical diagnostics and therapeutics applications in cell biology research arena. Label free cell separation techniques acceptance rate has been increased to multifold by various research groups. Size based cell separation method focuses on the intrinsic properties of the cell which not only avoids clogging issues associated with mechanical and centrifugation filtration methods but also reduces the overall cost for the process. Consequentially flow based cell separation method for continuous flow has attracted the attention of millions. Due to the realization of structures close to particle size in micro dimensions, the microfluidic devices offer precise and rapid particle manipulation which ultimately leads to an extraordinary cell separation results. The proposed microfluidic device is fabricated to separate polystyrene beads of size 1 μm, 5 μm, 10 μm and 20 μm. The actual dimensions of blood corpuscles were kept in mind while deciding the particle size of polystyrene beads which are used as a model particles for study. © 2016 Author(s).

Microfluidic-chip platform for cell sorting

This paper introduces a novel protection scheme designed for protecting multi-terminal transmission lines combined with wind energy source. With an increasing capacity of wind power installed in the world, the impact of wind generation during fault condition has been studied. Wind plants equipped with induction generator results in different fault behavior in transmission networks. After the wind plant model is developed, it is connected to an equivalent multi terminal transmission system. A fault is simulated on the transmission line so that the fault location algorithm can be applied to determine the fault location with the existence of wind plant. In this paper, the validation of wavelet fault analysis methods are performed on multi terminal transmission line connecting wind plant irrespective of the fault impedance, fault inception angle and location of the fault. © 2016 IEEE.

Multi-terminal transmission line protection using wavelet based digital relay in the presence of wind energy source

This paper explores the area of double-input single-output DC-DC converters to develop a photovoltaic (PV) source based DC microgrid which is incorporated with maximum power point tracking control technique. The converter used is a fifth-order converter utilizing boost plus single ended primary inductor converter topology which draws power from the two PV sources simultaneously and supplies upstream with reduced ripple current. A control strategy is developed for load voltage regulation by operating the PV in derating mode. The PV sources are controlled to remove any power mismatch, thus maintaining constant voltage at the load end. The voltage is measured at the load end and the error signal is sent to the controller through power line communication (PLC). Results obtained in MATLAB/ Simulink show that the proposed scheme helps in regulating the load voltage by derating the PV sources. This also demonstrates the successful application of the PLC technique in a DC system. © 2016 IEEE.

Voltage control of a DC microgrid with double-input converter in a multi-PV scenario using PLC

This paper proposes a control scheme for single phase inverter based systems. The inverter controller consists of two loops; the inner current control loop which is the faster one while the outer voltage / active and reactive power control loop is the slower one. A Lyapunov based inner (current) control is presented in this work which robustly tracks the reference current independent of the system frequency. The proposed controller is used in a grid connected single phase Photo Voltaic (PV) system and is compared with a Proportional Resonant (PR) and sliding mode controller which are generally used in AC systems. While the PR controller is tuned to operate at a particular frequency, the proposed controller performs much better in terms of tracking the reference current at any frequency. The controller is derived using the system differential equation and obtaining asymptotical stability using Lyapunov's stability criteria. © 2016 IEEE.

Lyapunov based frequency independent current controller for grid connected single phase PV systems

This paper deals with the application of wavelet based alienation technique for the detection and classification of faults on transmission lines. The three phase current signals of both the ends are synchronized with the help of Global Positioning System clock. These signals are decomposed with Haar wavelet to obtain approximate coefficients over a moving window of half cycle. Approximate Coefficients obtained over a half cycle are compared with the previous half cycle of same polarity to compute alienation coefficients at each end. A Fault Index, computed by adding alienation coefficients of local and remote end, is compared with the threshold to detect and classify the faults. The proposed algorithm has been tested successfully for various types of faults at different fault locations and different fault incidence angles. © 2015 IEEE.

Fault detection and classification on transmission line using wavelet based alienation algorithm

Focal plane ambiguity in depth map creation from defocus blur has remained an challenging problem. In this paper, we present a method to resolve this issue with the help of Chromatic Aberration(CA). CA is a distortion referred to focal length variation of the lens with wavelength of light. When light, a mixture of various monochromatic components, passes through a lens, multiple focal planes are generated due to CA. There also exists an inherent ordering in the defocus blur of the object for different RGB components depending on whether the object lies in the near or far focus region. The ordering reverses as soon as focal planes are crossed. By using this difference in ordering of the defocus amount for different RGB components of an object, we can deduce whether the object is present in front of or behind the image plane, hence using this information, a more reliable depth map can be obtained. © 2015 IEEE.

Resolving focal plane ambiguity in depth map creation from defocus blur using chromatic aberration

A continuous output integral sliding mode robustification methodology for switched uncertain linear time invariant systems with state-dependent location transitions and dwell time is presented. The robustifying methodology is based on the adjustment of the super-twisting algorithm gains to assure the convergence time and the attenuation of the chattering. The use of the adjusted STA allows to reconstruct the states theoretically exactly before half of the dwell time without the usage of filters, via a continuous cascade observer. Moreover, it allows to generate a continuous control signal that is turn on after the observer has converged, guaranteeing theoretically exact compensation of the matched uncertainties/perturbations before the dwell time. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

Continuous output integral sliding mode control for switched linear systems

Autopilot control law has been designed for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) using the second order sliding mode (SOSM) approach. The control implementation has an inner loop and an outer loop structure, outer loop converts the guidance commands to desired attitudes. Inner loop attitude tracking control is done using output feedback based higher order sliding mode technique. Finite time convergence properties of second order sliding mode technique has been used for designing tracking controller. Lyapunov based stability proof has been given to analyze the zero dynamics stability of the MAV longitudinal dynamics during tracking. Nonlinear 6DoF model of the Blackkite 300 mm wingspan fixed wing MAV, is used both for control design and as well as to verify controller performance against the classical PID control methods. © 2016, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Design of autopilot control laws for MAV using super twisting control

The paper proposes a theory and an algorithm to characterize driver node (control node) of a complex network. The proposed algorithm identifies an appropriate driver node when multiple options are available to select a driver node. The method is based on concept of maximization of stability regions. A realistic situation where driver node has limited actuating capability is considered. The proposed control law considers actuator saturation a priori and also ensures a specified convergence rate. Formation control in robotic network and numeric examples are used to verify the theoretical developments. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
