This paper presents the application of wavelet transform for broken rotor bar fault detection in a three-phase induction motor. One phase stator current signals are decomposed with db8 mother wave into approximate and detail coefficients. The detail coefficient including the frequencies near fundamental is chosen for analysis. Using the statistical analysis of the detail coefficient, it is found that mean absolute deviation varies in proportion to the fault severity. With the help of this parameter, not only fault detection can be accomplished, but also fault severity can be measured. The performance of the parameter is also tested under significant reduction in voltage drop and it is found that the mean absolute deviation remains undeterred in detecting and identifying fault severity under variation of supply voltage. The study has been performed on the experimentally collected data on laboratory simulated breakages in bars of the rotor. © 2019 IEEE.

Broken Rotor Bar Fault Diagnosis of a Three-phase Induction Motor using Discrete Wavelet Transform

This paper investigates the performances of adaptive linear neural network (ADALINE) based least mean square (LMS) control algorithm for distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM) to mitigate the power quality disturbances in a weak AC grid with multifarious load. The algorithm is based on the tracking of active unit voltage templates to maintain minimum error. This adaptive algorithm helps to extracts fundamental weighs of load currents to estimate controlled reference current signals. These reference current signals further compared with the actual weak AC grid current signals to generate controlled switching signals for the DSTATCOM to enhance the power quality. This adaptive control algorithm has been investigated successfully in current harmonics alleviation, voltage regulation, load balancing and reactive power compensation in the presence of non-linear load and induction furnace load at the point of common coupling. © 2019 IEEE.

Performance Evaluation of Adaline Controlled Dstatcom for Multifarious Load in Weak AC Grid

This paper presents an algorithm for transmission line fault diagnosis and classification using K-means clustering. The three-phase current signal is synchronized with the GPS clock and approximate wavelet coefficients are computed over a moving window of one cycle. Two centroids of successive cycles are computed using K-means clustering. The centroidal difference of local and remote bus are added to obtain resultant centroidal difference. The resultant centroidal difference is compared with the threshold to detect the fault. Similarly, the centroidal difference is computed of three-phases to classify the fault. A number of case studies have carried out to validate the proposed algorithm by fault impedance, fault incidence angle and, fault location. The robustness of the algorithm has been established in the presence of noise. © 2018 IEEE.

Centroidal Difference of Wavelet Approximate Coefficients Based Protection Scheme for Transmission Line

Wind energy (WE) source becomes widely used renewable energy sources for generating green, clean, and sustainable electrical energy due to their low cost and high efficiency. Integration of WE sources into the weak AC grid with unbalanced load is a significant cause of power quality deterioration. Therefore, wind side inverter is not capable of fulfilling the reactive power requirement and penetration level of the active power of the wind is very less. Thus, distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a smart solution to enhance the capability of WE sources to support the voltage of weak grids during the increase of WE penetration. In this work, the fourth-order least mean fourth (LMF) based adaptive control algorithm is proposed for smooth control of real and reactive power requirement by generating switching signals for DSTATCOM to enhance the WE penetration in weak AC grid in the presence of unbalanced load. The control algorithm has been successfully implemented in the MATLAB environment.

Adaptive Reactive Power Control of DSTATCOM in Weak AC Grid with High Wind Energy Penetration

We propose an algorithm to detect approximate reflection symmetry present in a set of volumetrically distributed points belonging to Rd containing a distorted reflection symmetry pattern. We pose the problem of detecting approximate reflection symmetry as the problem of establishing correspondences between the points which are reflections of each other and we determine the reflection symmetry transformation. We formulate an optimization framework in which the problem of establishing the correspondences amounts to solving a linear assignment problem and the problem of determining the reflection symmetry transformation amounts to solving an optimization problem on a smooth Riemannian product manifold. The proposed approach estimates the symmetry from the geometry of the points and is descriptor independent. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approach on the standard benchmark dataset and achieve the state-of-the-art performance. We further show the robustness of our approach by varying the amount of distortion in a perfect reflection symmetry pattern where we perturb each point by a different amount of perturbation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by applying it to the problem of 2-D (two-dimensional) and 3-D reflection symmetry detection along with comparisons. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Detecting approximate reflection symmetry in a point set using optimization on manifold

Dehazing is an important process as it can significantly improve the performance of computer vision applications in outdoor environments. The two main requirements that an online dehazing system demands are low processing time and high visual range. The authors present a novel dehazing algorithm based on colour uniformity principle (CUP) which meets the desired requirements of a realtime implementation. Estimation of atmospheric scattering parameter and transmission map forms the key step in dehazing problem. At first, the authors use CUP to generate the transmission map and refine it further by Fast Guided Filter. They estimate the atmospheric scattering parameter with the help of the estimated transmission map. Experimental results show that the quality of dehazed output, produced in real-time using the proposed method, is comparable with the results achieved by the state of the art techniques. The proposed dehazing method produces reliable dehazed output in varying haze conditions, unlike current methods. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2019.

Realtime dehazing using colour uniformity principle

In this paper, we report a cost effective and facile approach to produce uniform nanostructural black silicon over large-area by metal assist chemical etching followed by its transfer over pressure sensitive flexible substrate. Structural and optical properties of black silicon over flexible substrate were investigated. Field emission scanning electronic microscope (FESEM) reveals textured surface and dense morphology of silicon nanostructures; that appeared to be black. An intense and broadband UV and Visible photoluminescence spectra from these nanostructures was observed and suggested the optically active nature of black silicon. Broadening and asymmetric shifting of Raman line shape, corresponding to black silicon, confirmed quantum confinement of phonon. The crystal sizes of silicon (Si) nanostructures calculated using frequency shift in Raman spectra analytical model were 3.4 nm to 4.7 nm. Significant reduction of reflection below (1%) over the wide UV–Vis spectrum was recorded due to presence of textured surface as observed by FESEM. The present work aids our understanding of tuning the optical properties of black silicon and its’ realization on flexible substrate could be beneficial for flexible electronics including bio-sensing and optoelectronics devices. More interestingly low reflectance of black silicon could pave the way for realization of highly efficient flexible solar cells. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

A cost-effective and facile approach for realization of black silicon nanostructures on flexible substrate

Dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid (DBSA) doped polyaniline (PANI) nanorods have been synthesized by a templateless route via in-situ emulsion polymerization of aniline in aqueous DBSA solution. XRD patterns, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, and FTIR analysis confirm the formation of PANI and PANI-DBSA, whereas FESEM images revealed their elongated rod shaped morphology. The chloroform dispersion of synthesized PANI-DBSA was spin coated over prefabricated interdigitated Pt patterned glass substrate to realize porous gas sensing active layer. The sensor displays good response in 1-1200 ppm ammonia concentration range and can repeatedly detect 300 ppm of ammonia with response time of 6 s, recovery time of 37 s and relative response value of 9.57. Besides, its response was found to be linear for 1-50 ppm ammonia concentration with relative response per ppm value of 0.01675. © 2013 IEEE.

Improved ammonia sensing by solution processed dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline nanorod networks

In this work, Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is applied for fast detection and location of faults using quarter cycle post fault current information, measured at the secondary of the substation transformer. Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is carried out over a moving window to obtain first level residue, on which Hilbert Transform (HT) is applied in order to obtain the instantaneous attributes. Standard deviations of instantaneous frequency (SDIF), amplitude (SDIA) and average value of residue (AVR) are obtained for computing fault location indices. A tree like logic flow is implemented by comparing these indices with thresholds to identify the zone of fault and subsequently the exact fault location. The proposed algorithm has been implemented for IEEE 13 bus distribution system using MATLAB. Various case studies involving changes in fault type, fault incidence angle, bus location, fault resistance have been carried out in order to establish the proposed algorithm. It has also been established that the protection algorithm is not affected by non faulty transients such as switching of compensating equipment. © 2019 IEEE.

Fast protection scheme for distribution system using hilbert-huang transform

A novel method based on constellation structure is proposed to identify PSK and QAM modulation of different orders, in the slow and flat fading channel. The proposed method does not require training for threshold optimization and considers carrier frequency, symbol rate, and phase offset unknown. The symbol rate is estimated using the spectrum of the instantaneous phase of the complex baseband signal. Carrier frequency offset (CFO) is estimated and corrected from the downconverted signal and downsampled to the estimated symbol rate for extraction of constellation points. The phase offset is determined based on the symmetrical structure of constellation. The features extracted using k-medoids are used for classification of the final modulation scheme. Results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms some existing classifiers and offers lower computational complexity compared to algorithms based on subtractive clustering. © 1997-2012 IEEE.
