The paper presents a new method for design of power system stabilizer based on fuzzy logic and output feedback sliding mode controller. The control objective is to enhance the stability and to improve the dynamic response of the single machine infinite bus(SMIB) system operating in different conditions. First, the control rules are constructed according to the concepts of output feedback sliding mode control, and the fuzzy sets, whose membership functions are defined. Then, hitting control, which guarantees the stability of control system, is developed. Finally, the hitting control is smoothed via the constructed heuristic control rules. We apply this output feedback fuzzy sliding mode controller to design power system stabilizer for demonstrating the availability of the proposed approach [1]. © 2005 IEEE.

Output feedback fuzzy sliding mode control technique based Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system

Gradient Adjusted Predictor (GAP) uses seven fixed range of slope quantization bins and different predictors associated with each bin, for prediction of pixels of all kinds of images. Criteria for range of slope in the bins and associated predictors are not reported in the literature. This paper presents a technique for slope quantization bins which are optimum for a given set of images. It also presents a technique for finding a statistically optimal predictor for a given range of slope bin. Simulation results, for medical images, using optimal slope bins and associated predictors show a significant better compression performance as compared to the other methods such as GAP and Edge-Directed prediction (EDP) method. The proposed method and GAP has same order of computational complexity while EDP is computationally much expensive. © 2005 IEEE.

Optimal slope bin classification in gradient adjusted predictor for lossless compression of medical images

The fabrication of lateral ultra-narrow fin body (thickness ≤10 nm) gate-all-around MOSFETs, which exhibit excellent gate electrostatic control over the channel, is presented. The narrow fins were formed using alternating phase DUV lithography and low temperature oxidation of Si. The device characteristics are completely free from substrate bias effects.

Gate-all-around MOSFETs: Lateral ultra-narrow (≤10 nm) fin as channel body

A thermally actuated free space single crystal silicon micromirror device has been developed using one wafer low cost fabrication process. The device consists of a central mirror plate symmetrically joined with four thermal bimorph actuators through flexural springs. All the structural components of the device are fabricated in single crystal silicon using bulk silicon micromachining technology. Composite cantilevers of single crystal silicon, silicon dioxide, and aluminum are used as bimorph thermal actuators. This is an analogue micromirror device, which operates very accurately within an angular range for steering light beam in free space. The micromirror was demonstrated to achieve up to 10° repeatable angular deflection, 8-13 ms thermal response time, and 29 cm radius of curvature. The device was operated continuously for 100 million switching cycles at 40 Hz; no change in performance was observed which shows a good structural reliability. The target application area is optical communication networks; however, the device is equally useful for other scanning type of applications. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

3D free space thermally actuated micromirror device

In this paper, we present the experimental measurements of real-time voice packets over 3G-WLAN interworking system. It is of interest to evaluate (i) the performance of VoIP with IPSec tunnel in 3G-WLAN interworking system, (ii) maximum number of VoIP connections in a single 802.11b Access Point(AP), (iii) handoff latency due to terminal mobility and (iv) impact of terminal mobility on the VoIP performance. Our results show that the performance can degrade significantly with the increase of VoIP connections and with the terminal mobility. Furthermore, the performance degradation affects all the existing VoIP connections, not merely the new connection or the UE which undergoes mobility. The amount of delay during terminal movement severely affects the performance of all real-time applications in that particular AP. © 2005 IEEE.

Performance evaluation of VoIP over 3G-WLAN interworking system

Power-system stabilizers (PSSs) are added to excitation systems to enhance the damping during low-frequency oscillations. In this paper, the design of robust decentralized PSS for four machines with a 10-bus system using fast-output sampling feedback is proposed. The nonlinear model of a multimachine system is linearized at different operating points, and 16 linear state space models are obtained. For all of these plants, a common stabilizing state feedback gain, F, is obtained. A robust decentralized fast-output sampling feedback gain which realizes this state feedback gain is obtained using LMI approach. This method does not require all the states of the system for feedback and is easily implementable. This robust decentralized fast-output sampling control is applied to a nonlinear plant model of several machines at different operating (equilibrium) points. This method yields encouraging results for the design of power-system stabilizers. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group Ltd.

Discrete-time sliding mode control: A multirate output feedback approach

As neural networks are parallel machines, they hold great promise for solving complex problems. Due to the ability of neural networks to approximate arbitrary non-linearities, neural networks play a vital role in control field. To implement a neural network based predictive control, dynamic modeling of the process is required. The developed dynamic model is used to predict the output and try to minimize the difference between the predicted outputs and desired trajectory. A neural network based predictive control is implemented for a PMTD Process. © 2005 IEEE.

Neural network based predictive controller (NNPC): An investigation into its application in textiles

In this paper we report the realization and characterization of low-loss, capacitive RF MEMS switches that utilize folded serpentine spring suspensions with large area actuation electrodes. The surface micromachined switches with 1.7 μm thick, electroplated gold beams are implemented in standard 50 ohm CPW configuration. The electromechanical characterization indicates the measured actuation voltages in the range of 8 - 15 volts. The RF measurements of devices give insertion loss of 0.24 dB and isolation better than 21 dB at 20 GHz. © 2004 IEEE.

Micromachined low actuation voltage RF MEMS capacitive switches, technology and characterization

Fast output sampling control has been shown recently to be useful for various applications. The present work attempts to utilize the same control law for a completely new application: the autopilot controller design for a launch vehicle system. A linearized model representing rigid body dynamics of a launch vehicle system has been derived using the basic non-linear and coupled equations. The equations are simplified using the assumptions compatible with a laboratory scale launch vehicle model. To prevent the problems of poor error dynamics and noise sensitivity arising in practical applications, the design problem is transformed into an equivalent Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) form to realize a robust state feedback approximately by fast output sampling, in a way that closeness to the original design can be traded against reducing the deteriorating effects. Multi-model robust stabilization is achieved with satisfactory results.
