Guest Editorial: Introduction to IT Enabled Services

This paper addresses the problem of invariant-based recognition of quadric configurations from a single image. These configurations consist of a pair of rigidly connected translationally repeated quadric surfaces. This problem is approached via a reconstruction framework. A new mathematical framework, using relative affine structure, on the lines of Luong and Vieville, has been proposed. Using this mathematical framework, translationally repeated objects have been projectively reconstructed, from a single image, with four image point correspondences of the distinguished points on the object and its translate. This has been used to obtain a reconstruction of a pair of translationally repeated quadrics. We have proposed joint projective invariants of a pair of proper quadrics. For the purpose of recognition of quadric configurations, we compute these invariants for the pair of reconstructed quadrics. Experimental results on synthetic and real images, establish the discriminatory power and stability of the proposed invariant-based recognition strategy. As a specific example, we have applied this technique for discriminating images of monuments which are characterized by translationally repeated domes modeled as quadrics.

Reconstruction-based recognition of scenes with translationally repeated quadrics

This paper is an attempt towards obtaining a method for validation of personal identification documents such as licenses, photo IDs. The method tries to obtain a photosignature from the image document by using certain image processing techniques. The method uses discrete cosine transform (DCT) based technique to obtain the required signature. This gives a substantially compressed signature which is quite unique for that particular document. In case of authentication from a large database the signature can be used as hashing function for indexing. Results of experiments done on a large database have validated the approach. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Image based document authentication using DCT

Protein fingerprinting is a widely used technique in epidemiological studies for typing bacterial strains. This study reports the development of a computer based gel analysis system. The system has the capability to analyse SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein profiles using digital image processing techniques. The software incorporates spatial and frequency domain operators for image enhancement, support for geometric correction of images and new algorithms for identification of strain tracks and protein bands. The system also provides facilities for correcting imaging defects for inter-gel comparison, similarity analysis, clustering and pictorial representation of results as a dendrogram. The software is highly interactive, user-friendly and can produce accurate results for differentiation of bacterial strains with minimal overhead of time.

We present an open and extensible architecture, ImAge, for content-based image retrieval in a distributed environment. The architecture proposes the use of system components with standard public interfaces for implementing retrieval functionality. The standardization of the components and their encapsulation in autonomous software agents result in functional stratification and easy extensibility. Collaboration of the independent retrieval resources in ImAge results in enhanced system capability. Reuse of existing retrieval resources is achieved by encapsulating them in agents with standard interfaces. The addition of independent agents with domain knowledege adds the capability of processing conceptual queries, while reusing the existing system components for feature-based retrieval. A communication protocol allows the declaration of the capabilities of the system components and negotiations for optimal resource selection for solving a retrieval problem. The use of mobile agents alleviates network bottlenecks. This paper describes a prototype implementation that validates the architecture. © Springer-Verlag 2000.

ImAge: An extensible agent-based architecture for image retrieval

In many cases, a single view of an object may not contain sufficient features to recognize it unambiguously. This paper presents a new on-line recognition scheme based on next view planning for the identification of an isolated three-dimensional (3-D) object using simple features. The scheme uses a probabilistic reasoning framework for recognition and planning. Our knowledge representation scheme encodes feature based information about objects as well as the uncertainty in the recognition process. This is used both in the probability calculations as well as in planning the next view. Results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy for a reasonably complex experimental set.

Isolated 3-D object recognition through next view planning

We present a generic architecture for content based retrieval of images, which can be extended to the requirements of large distributed and heterogeneous collections. The system is modeled as a multi agent system where an autonomous search agent encapsulates independent image retrieval algorithms. An optimal team of agents is dynamically selected for every retrieval problem. A flexible protocol allows for dynamic addition of search agents incorporating new pattern recognition techniques. These agents are coded as mobile agents, so that they can travel across a wide area network and analyze the documents at their sources. The separation of physical image forms and their logical structural composition allows the search agents to operate over heterogeneous repositories. A prototype implementation validates the effectiveness of the architecture. © 1999 IEEE.

Content based image retrieval using mobile agents

This paper describes an MIMD algorithm for the detection of constant curvature features in an image of man-made objects. This method involves intelligent partitioning of the edge points belonging to the object contour into logical divisions so that geometric token extraction algorithm for each partition can work independently. Partitioning is done using curvature information. A new technique is proposed for the estimation of curvature on the basis of local information. Modified Hough transform based techniques have been applied for the extraction of linear and curved segments from individual partitions. Experimental results have established effectiveness of the scheme.

An MIMD algorithm for constant curvature feature extraction using curvature based data partitioning

In this paper, a new neural network based indexing scheme has been proposed for recognition of planar shapes. Local contour segment-based-invariants have been used for indexing. Object contours have been obtained using a new algorithm which combines advantages of region growing and edge detection. Neighbourhood constraints have been applied on the results of indexing for combining hypotheses generated through the indexing scheme. Composite hypotheses have been verified using a distance transform based algorithm. Experimental results, on real images of varying complexity of a reasonably large database of objects have established the robustness of the method. © 1999 Pattern Recognition Society.
