This paper presents a novel biometric watermarking algorithm for improving the recognition accuracy and protecting the face and fingerprint images from tampering. Multi-resolution Discrete Wavelet Transform is used for embedding the face image in a finger print image. An intelligent learning algorithm based on õ-Support Vector Machine (SVM) is introduced to enhance the quality of the extracted face image. The performance of the watermarking algorithm is experimentally validated using existing fingerprint and face recognition algorithms. The results show that the extracted fingerprint and faceimages are of high quality. The use of SVMenhances the performance of face recognition by at least 10% even when the watermarked image is subjected to certain geometric and frequency attacks such as scaling, cropping, compression and filtering. © 2005, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers. Improving biometric recognition accuracy and robustness using DWT and SVM watermarking

An investigation was carried out during 2000-01 to study the adsorptive behaviour of thiophanate-methyl on humic acid extracted from soil. Adsorptions of thiophanate-methyl by humic acid followed the Freundlich and Langmuir equations. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of humic acid depends both on nature and type of saturating cations present on humic acid surface. The order of adsorption of thiophanate-methyl by humic acid was humic acid> Ca- humic acid > Mg-humic acid in the soil studied.

Adsorption behaviour of thiophanate-methyl on soil extracted humic acid

In this paper we have proposed a novel scheme for locating text regions in an image. The method is based on multi-resolution wavelet analysis. We used matched wavelets to capture textural characteristics of image regions. A clustering based approach has been proposed for estimating globally matched wavelets (GMWs)for a given collection of images. Using these GMWs, we generate feature vectors for segmentation and identification of text regions in an image. Our method, unlike most of the other methods, does not require any a priori information about the font, font-size, scripts, geometric transformation, distortion or background texture. We have tested our method on various categories of images like license plates, posters, hand written documents and document images etc. The results show proposed method to be a robust, versatile and effective tool for text extraction from images. © 2005 IEEE.

Locating text in images using matched wavelets

Prevalent visualization tools exploit gray value distribution in images through modified histogram equalization and matching technique, referred to as the window width/window level-based method, to improve visibility and enhance diagnostic value. The window width/window level tool is extensively used in magnetic resonance (MR) images to highlight tissue boundaries during image interpretation. However, the identification of different regions and distinct boundaries between them based on gray-level distribution and displayed intensity levels is extremely difficult because of the large dynamic range of tissue intensities inherent in MR images. We propose a soft-segmentation visualization scheme to generate pixel partitions from the histogram of MR image data using a connectionist approach and then generate selective visual depictions of pixel partitions using pseudo color based on an appropriate fuzzy membership function. By applying the display scheme in clinical examples in this study, we could demonstrate additional overlapping regions between distinct tissue types in healthy and diseased areas (in the brain) that could help improve the tissue characterization ability of MR images. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. Reducing the False Rejection Rate of Iris Recognition Using Textural and Topological Features

In this paper, we propose a scheme for accessing document images using ontology. We make use of an extension of OWL (Ontology Language for Web) to allow encoding of ontologies for document images. We experimentally demonstrate that reasoning with the concepts defined in ontology and their observation models provide a mechanism to support conceptual querying and automated hyperlinking of document images. © 2005 IEEE.

Ontology guided access to document images

We describe a face mosaicing scheme that generates a composite face image during enrollment based on the evidence provided by frontal and semi-profile face images of an individual. Face mosaicing obviates the need to store multiple face templates representing multiple poses of a user's face image. In the proposed scheme, the side profile images are aligned with the frontal image using a terrain transform that exploits neighborhood properties to determine the transformation relating the 2 images. Multiresolution splining is then used to blend the side profiles with the frontal image thereby generating a composite face image of the user. A local binary pattern matching algorithm is used to compare an input face image with the template face mosaic. Experiments conducted on a small dataset of 27 users indicate that face mosaicing as described in this paper offers significant benefits by accounting for the pose variations commonly observed in face images.

Performance enhancement of 2D face recognition via mosaicing

A signature verification algorithm based on static and dynamic features of online signature data is presented. Texture and topological features are the static features of a signature image whereas the digital tablet captures in real-time the pressure values, breakpoints, and the time taken to create a signature. ID - log Gabor wavelet and Euler numbers are used to analyze the textural and topological features of the signature respectively. A multi-classifier decision algorithm combines the results obtained from three feature sets to attain an accuracy of 98.18%. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Signature verification using static and dynamic features

We propose a computational model for generating an interpretation of a video shot based on our proposed principle of perceptual prominence. We also provide a formulation of the perceptual grouping problem in the spatio-temporal domain to identify the perceptual clusters. We illustrate our approach with experimental results.

In this paper we present Heritage+, an integrated platform for interactive access of different types of media elements through an unified interface. A unique aspect of Heritage+ is that it deals with document images as distinct media type and implements tools and techniques for browsing and querying document images along with other media elements like video sequences and images. Further, Heritage+ proposes a new scheme for encoding and use of ontology for accessing multi-media collection. In the context of document images, the ontology specifies the document class-specific semantics of the logical components that help in an automated semantically meaningful linking of documents and their components with heterogeneous media-type resources. Further, Heritage+ supports conceptual query of document images along with other media elements. This multi-functional access interface to the document images is provided in Heritage+ using a novel model guided document image segmentation scheme and word-image based indexing scheme.
