Most of the document pre-processing techniques are parameter dependent. In this paper, we present a novel framework that learns optimal parameters, depending on the nature of the document image content for binarization and text/graphics segmentation. The learning problem has been formulated as an optimization problem using EM algorithm to adaptively learn optimal parameters. Experimental results have established the effectiveness of our approach. © 2012 ACM.

Content directed enhancement of degraded document images

Tagging is nowadays the most predominant technique to make resources searchable. These allow users to create and manage tags to annotate and categorize content. In this paper, we propose an approach to tag images in a user's collection based upon user's personal profile, his/her social context and the context defined by his/her prior image collection. We apply LDA for context modeling. In this scheme, tag similarity and tag relevance are jointly estimated so that they can profit from each other. We have used an Adaptive Context Model created from user related sources to tag images. Experimental validation with user's mobile as well as website based image collection has established effectiveness of the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

A ubiquitous image tagging system using user context

In this paper, we describe a novel technique for Document script identification(DSI) from printed documents, using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). The intrinsic decomposition nature can adaptively decompose script images into a series of modes representing different local features of script images. In this method, Radon transformed script images are decomposed into finite set of IMFs (Intrinsic Mode Functions). The energy concentration in a particular orientation characterises a script texture as it indicates the dominance of individual script in that direction. We demonstrate how the proposed method use these IMFs as feature vectors to distinguish various scripts. © 2012 ACM.

An empirical intrinsic mode based characterization of Indian scripts

The last few years have seen an exponential increase in the amount of multimedia content that is available online thanks to collaborative-online communities such as Flickr, You Tube etc. As opposed to "pure" social networking services these collaborative-online communities not only allow users to create new social links (e.g. add other users to their friend or contact list) but also allow users to contribute multimedia content and engage in content-driven interactions (called userto- content interactions). A good example of this can be seen in Flickr, in general and Flickr Group in particular where users can comment on or "like" an image contributed by another user. This paper looks at the task of predicting the formation of such user-to-content links in Flickr Groups. More specifically, what is the chance that a user will comment/like an image contributed by another user?. Our proposed method for predicting user-tocontent links takes into account both community effect and content effect. Our results on real-world Flickr Group data reveals that the proposed method shows good performance for the user-tocontent link prediction task. © 2012 IEEE.

Predicting user-to-content links in flickr groups

This paper presents a novel parameterized variety based architecture for interactive 3DTV and Free viewpoint TV (FTV) applications. The proposed signal representation scheme allows to render free viewpoint images, taking only few sample images of the scene acquired by arbitrary, uncalibrated cameras. We extend the Parameterized Image Variety approach for rendering proposed earlier by Genc and Ponce [1] to handle full perspective cameras. A fast and efficient algebraic framework is proposed for the parameterized representation of 3D scene, in terms of image pixel positions corresponding to only three reference scene points. The key aspects of the novel FTV architecture based on this variety model are i) interactive stereoscopic view synthesis from arbitrary viewpoint ii) intuitive interface for content based virtual view specification iii) facilitation to add special effects like 3D scene augmentation. © 2012 ICPR Org Committee.

A free viewpoint 3DTV system based on parameterized variety model

Simultaneous latent fingerprints are a cluster of latent fingerprints that are concurrently deposited by the same person. Inherent challenges of latent fingerprints such as partial and smudgy ridge flow information, presence of background noise, and availability of less number of features makes it challenging to develop an automated system for simultaneous latent fingerprint matching. This research attempts to fill this gap by developing a fusion framework. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: (i) an automated hierarchical fusion approach is proposed for fusing evidences from multiple latent impressions and (ii) IIITD simultaneous latent fingerprint database is prepared to drive further research in this area. The proposed algorithm yields promising results on the simultaneous latent fingerprint database. © 2012 IEEE.

Hierarchical fusion for matching simultaneous latent fingerprint

Multi-Spectro-Temporal Curvature Scale Space (MST-CSS) had been proposed as a video content descriptor in an earlier work, where the peak and saddle points were used for feature points. But these are inadequate to capture the salient features of the MST-CSS surface, producing poor retrieval results. To overcome these, we propose EMST-CSS (Enhanced MST-CSS) as a better feature representation with an improved matching method for CBVR (Content Based Video Retrieval). Comparative study with the existing MST-CSS representation and two state-of-the-art methods for CBVR shows enhanced performance on one synthetic and two real-world datasets. © 2012 IEEE.

Enhancing the MST-CSS representation using robust geometric features, for efficient Content Based Video Retrieval (CBVR)

Muscle satellite cells, also known as myogenic precursor cells, are the dedicated stem cells responsible for postnatal skeletal muscle growth, repair, and hypertrophy. Biological studies aimed at describing satellite cell activity on their host myofiber using timelapse light microscopy enable qualitative study, but high-throughput automatic tracking of satellite cells translocating on myofibers is very difficult due to their complex motion across the three-dimensional surface of myofibers and the lack of discriminating cell features. Other complicating factors include inhomogeneous illumination, fixed focal plane, low contrast, and stage motion. We propose a semi-automated approach for satellite cell tracking on myofibers consisting of registration with illumination correction, background subtraction and particle filtering. Initial experimental results show the effectiveness of the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Semi-automated tracking of muscle satellite cells in brightfield microscopy video

A field study was carried out to monitor the effect of application of molasses based distillery effluent on yields of sugarcane and soil properties. The treatments consisted of main plots: control (I0), first pre-sowing irrigation with undiluted effluent (I1), one irrigation with effluent: tube-well water (1:3) at tillering stage (I2), two irrigations with effluent: tube-well water (1:4) at tillering and 30 d after tillering stage (I3). The subplots either received no fertilizer application (F0) or had 50 % of recommended dose (50 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 40 kg K2O ha-1 as basal dose (F1) with top dressing of 50 kg N ha-1 at tillering and in June before the onset of monsoon. Nitrogen to the ratoon crops was applied in three equal splits. Application of 50 % recommended fertilizer dose increased the cumulative cane yields under different effluent treatments. Use of distillery effluent irrespective of the method of application significantly increased the cumulative yields of sugarcane over no application of effluent significantly at p ≤ 0. 05. After the harvest of second ratoon crop, no significant effect of different treatments was noted on soil pH, electrical conductance and exchangeable Na. Significantly higher build-up of organic C in surface soil was noted under I2 treatment in comparison to I0 treatment at p ≤ 0. 05. With no fertilizer application, both I1 and I2 significantly increased accumulation of alkaline KMnO4 hydrolysable N in 30-45 cm layer in comparison to I0F0 at p ≤ 0. 05. In comparison to I0, use of I2 increased the content of Olsen's P significantly (p ≤ 0. 05) in 30-45 and 45-60 cm layers while I3 increased it significantly at p ≤ 0. 05 in 0-15 and 45-60 cm layers. Use of distillery effluent as pre-sowing or standing crop irrigation increased ammonium acetate extractable K in surface and sub-surface layers significantly in comparison to I0 at p ≤ 0. 05. Thus, use of distillery effluent in sugarcane crop as pre-sown or standing crop irrigation had no adverse impact on soil reaction or electrical conductivity and could save at least fifty percent of basal NPK application with significantly higher cumulative millable cane yields of main crop and two subsequent ratoons. {\textcopyright} 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Utilization of molasses based distillery effluent for fertigation of sugarcane

Tuple Space based Mobile Middleware (TSMM), with tuple space as its coordination medium, provides decoupled coordination of different agents of its supported applications over mobile, dynamic and unreliable networks, like Infrastructure Basic Service Set (iBSS). TSMM includes its own discovery and communication mechanisms to achieve robustness and flexibility in such networks. This paper suggests an approach for formalizing these discovery and communication mechanisms of TSMM, in order to appropriately analyze robustness and flexibility of TSMM in presence of underlying unreliability. Formalization is carried out using Mobile UNITY. © 2012 IEEE.
