The performance of a two-phase heat transport device such as the loop heat pipe is influenced by the evaporative heat transfer coefficient in the evaporator. From previous experiments with loop heat pipes, it has been observed that fluids with a high heat pipe figure of merit have a high heat transfer coefficient. Considering an evaporating extended thin film, this paper theoretically corroborates this experimental observation by deriving a direct link between the evaporative heat flux at the interface and the fluid figures of merit (namely interline heat flow parameter and heat pipe figure of merit) in the thin film. Numerical experiments with different working fluids clearly show that a fluid with high figure of merit also has a high cumulative heat transfer in the microregion encompassing the evaporating thin film. Thus, a loop heat pipe or heat pipe that uses a working fluid with a high interline heat flow parameter and heat pipe figure of merit will lead to a high evaporative heat transfer coefficient© 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Effect of heat pipe figure of merit on an evaporating thin film

Boundary layers are subject to favorable and adverse pressure gradients because of both the temporal and spatial components of the pressure gradient. The adverse pressure gradient may cause the flow to separate. In a closed loop unsteady tunnel we have studied the initiation of separation in unsteady flow past a constriction (bluff body) in a channel. We have proposed two important scalings for the time when boundary layer separates. One is based on the local pressure gradient and the other is a convective time scale based on boundary layer parameters. The flow visualization using a dye injection technique shows the flow structure past the body. Nondimensional shedding frequency (Strouhal number) is calculated based on boundary layer and momentum thicknesses. Strouhal number based on the momentum thickness shows a close agreement with that for flat plate and circular cylinder. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Unsteady separation and vortex shedding from a laminar separation bubble over a bluff body

This work is concerned with the removal of unwanted fluid through the source-sink pair. The source consists of fluid issuing out of a nozzle in the form of a jet and the sink is a pipe that is kept some distance from the source pipe. Of concern is the percentage of source fluid sucked through the sink. The experiments have been carried in a large glass water tank. The source nozzle diameter is 6 mm and the sink pipe diameter is either 10 or 20 mm. The horizontal and vertical separations and angles between these source and sink pipes are adjustable. The flow was visualized using KMnO4 dye, planer laser induced fluorescence and particle streak photographs. To obtain the effectiveness (that is percentage of source fluid entering the sink pipe), titration method is used. The velocity profiles with and without the sink were obtained using particle image velocimetry. The sink flow rate to obtain a certain effectiveness increase dramatically with lateral separation. The sink diameter and the angle between source and the sink axes don't influence effectiveness as much as the lateral separation. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Removal of unwanted fluid

Abstract We investigate the effect of a prescribed tangential velocity on the drag force on a circular cylinder in a spanwise uniform cross flow. Using a combination of theoretical and numerical techniques we make an attempt at determining the optimal tangential velocity profiles which will reduce the drag force acting on the cylindrical body while minimizing the net power consumption characterized through a non-dimensional power loss coefficient ( C PL). A striking conclusion of our analysis is that the tangential velocity associated with the potential flow, which completely suppresses the drag force, is not optimal for both small and large, but finite Reynolds number. When inertial effects are negligible (Re≪1), theoretical analysis based on two-dimensional Oseen equations gives us the optimal tangential velocity profile which leads to energetically efficient drag reduction. Furthermore, in the limit of zero Reynolds number (Re→0), minimum power loss is achieved for a tangential velocity profile corresponding to a shear-free perfect slip boundary. At finite Re, results from numerical simulations indicate that perfect slip is not optimum and a further reduction in drag can be achieved for reduced power consumption. A gradual increase in the strength of a tangential velocity which involves only the first reflectionally symmetric mode leads to a monotonic reduction in drag and eventual thrust production. Simulations reveal the existence of an optimal strength for which the power consumption attains a minima. At a Reynolds number of 100, minimum value of the power loss coefficient ( CPL = 0. 37) is obtained when the maximum in tangential surface velocity is about one and a half times the free stream uniform velocity corresponding to a percentage drag reduction of approximately 77 %; C PL = 0. 42 and 0. 50 for perfect slip and potential flow cases, respectively. Our results suggest that potential flow tangential velocity enables energetically efficient propulsion at all Reynolds numbers but optimal drag reduction only for Re→∞. The two-dimensional strategy of reducing drag while minimizing net power consumption is shown to be effective in three dimensions via numerical simulation of flow past an infinite circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 300. Finally a strategy of reducing drag, suitable for practical implementation and amenable to experimental testing, through piecewise constant tangential velocities distributed along the cylinder periphery is proposed and analysed. © Cambridge University Press 2013.

This work is concerned with the interaction of a source-sink pair. Real source-sink pair

This paper deals with the study of a submerged jet for the suction of unwanted fluid. This submerged jet is caused by the fluid coming out from a source. The presence of a sink in front of this source facilitates the suction of the fluid depending upon the source and sink flow rates, the axial and lateral separations of the source and sink, and the angle between the axes of the source and sink. The main purpose is the determination of the sink flow rate for 100 % removal of the source fluid as a function of these parameters. The experiments have been carried using a source nozzle 6 mm in diameter and two sizes for the sink pipe diameter: 10 mm and 20 mm. The main diagnostics used are flow visualization using dye and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The dependence of the required suction flow rate to obtain 100 % effectiveness on the suction tube diameter and angle is relatively weak compared to the lateral separation. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Study of submerged jet for suction of fluid

The present paper discusses the flow visualization for turbulent free convection in a tank of water with the bottom surface being a smooth or a grooved surface and the top of the water surface exposed to ambient. The grooved surface is of parallel 90° V-grooves with groove height of 10mm and groove width of 20mm. The experiment is carried out with aspect ratio (AR) of 2.9 and Rayleigh number (Ra) in the range, 1.3×10 7-4×10 7. Here AR is the aspect ratio (= width of fluid layer/height of fluid layer). Heat flux at the bottom surface is from electrical heating. From the pH-dye visualization, interesting flow structures are observed and these structures are analyzed with the help of plumes dynamics and temperature variations with time. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Flow visualization in turbulent free convection over horizontal smooth and grooved surfaces

Natural ventilation of a model room with water as the fluid medium is studied. It is insulated by air gaps on the four sides and at the top. A constant heat flux has been maintained on the bottom surface of the room. This room is surrounded by a large exterior tank containing water. There are three openings each on two opposing sides of the model room. For any experiment, only one opening on each side is kept open. Fluid enters or leaves these openings and the flow is driven entirely by buoyancy forces. Shadowgraph technique is used for visualization. The buoyancy causes flow to enter through the bottom opening and leaves through the top opening. At the openings, buoyant jets are observed and which have higher or lower relative density compared with that of its environment. The buoyant jet at the inlet interacts with the plumes on the heated bottom plate. From these visualizations, it appears that free convection at bottom plate will be affected by the buoyant jets at the openings and the degree to which it is affected depends on the position and size of openings and distance between inlet and outlet. The flow rate due to the natural ventilation depends on the bottom surface heat flux and the height difference between the openings. The temperatures of the floor, the interior and the exterior are calculated using a simple mathematical model. The values of temperatures obtained in the experiments are reasonably well predicted by the mathematical model. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Natural Ventilation in a Model Room

This study investigates the free convection and plumes dynamics over horizontal surfaces with parallel V-grooves. The convection is studied in a tank of water with the bottom surface being a smooth or grooved surface and the top of the water surface exposed to ambient. Two groove heights were used - 10 mm and 3 mm - and the experiment was done with two values of aspect ratio - 2.9 and 1.8 (aspect ratio is the width of the fluid layer/height of fluid layer). Heat flux at the bottom surface was from electrical heating. Beyond a certain critical temperature difference, enhanced heat transfer is obtained on the grooved surface compared to a smooth surface. Nusselt numbers are evaluated for both smooth and grooved surfaces and correlated using modified Rayleigh numbers. Visualization shows that the enhanced heat transport in the rough cavities cannot be ascribed to the increase in the contact area; rather, it must be the local dynamics of the thermal boundary layer. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Plumes dynamics and heat transfer over horizontal grooved surfaces

Cloud formation is a ubiquitous process and modeling it as a simplified experimental set-up may be an interesting and fruitful task. In this study different flow and thermal processes and fluid structures during cloud formation (especially Cumulus clouds1) are investigated through an experimental setup. Vapor coming out of a 20cm×20cm water surface at temperature 60-800C interacts inside a square plexiglas tube of vertical height 60cm with dry, cold air passing from above the tube. An air conditioner is used to supply cold air at temperature 180C over the plexiglas tube. Various parameters like rate of evaporation, speed of cold air are regulated as per requirements. Turbulent plume structure is observed through a sheet of light. Optical visualization method is adopted for observing the condensed water droplets. Movies of vertical and horizontal views of plume structure are taken. Observation of this entrainment process reveals the turbulent nature of convection related to it and the gradual growth of cloud (aggregation of condensed water particles) with drop of temperature as clouds move up. Our present study is also important for prediction of type of Cumulus cloud formed for known environmental conditions. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Experimental study of cloud formation

Convection traditionally refers to heat transfer associated with a fluid which is in motion. When the fluid motion is caused by an external agency, for example, a fan or a “wind,” the convection is termed as forced convection. In free convection, in contrast, fluid motion is predominantly due to buoyancy forces caused by density differences in the fluid; the density difference is generally due to variations of temperature or variations of concentration of species or both. © 2013 CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

We present planforms of line plumes formed on horizontal surfaces in turbulent convection, along with the length of line plumes measured from these planforms, in a six decade range of Rayleigh numbers (105 &lt; Ra &lt; 1011) and at three Prandtl numbers (Pr = 0.7, 5.2, 602). Using geometric constraints on the relations for the mean plume spacings, we obtain expressions for the total length of near-wall plumes on horizontal surfaces in turbulent convection. The plume length per unit area (Lp/A), made dimensionless by the near-wall length scale in turbulent convection (Z w), remains constant for a given fluid. The Nusselt number is shown to be directly proportional to Lp H/A for a given fluid layer of height H. The increase in Pr has a weak influence in decreasing Lp/A. These expressions match the measurements, thereby showing that the assumption of laminar natural convection boundary layers in turbulent convection is consistent with the observed total length of line plumes. We then show that similar relationships are obtained based on the assumption that the line plumes are the outcome of the instability of laminar natural convection boundary layers on the horizontal surfaces. © 2011 Cambridge University Press.

Length of near-wall plumes in turbulent convection

There exist a huge range of fish species besides other aquatic organisms like squids and salps that locomote in water at large Reynolds numbers, a regime of flow where inertial forces dominate viscous forces. In the present review, we discuss the fluid mechanics governing the locomotion of such organisms. Most fishes propel themselves by periodic undulatory motions of the body and tail, and the typical classification of their swimming modes is based on the fraction of their body that undergoes such undulatory motions. In the angulliform mode, or the eel type, the entire body undergoes undulatory motions in the form of a travelling wave that goes from head to tail, while in the other extreme case, the thunniform mode, only the rear tail (caudal fin) undergoes lateral oscillations. The thunniform mode of swimming is essentially based on the lift force generated by the airfoil like crosssection of the fish tail as it moves laterally through the water, while the anguilliform mode may be understood using the "reactive theory" of Lighthill. In pulsed jet propulsion, adopted by squids and salps, there are two components to the thrust; the first due to the familiar ejection of momentum and the other due to an over-pressure at the exit plane caused by the unsteadiness of the jet. The flow immediately downstream of the body in all three modes consists of vortex rings; the differentiating point being the vastly different orientations of the vortex rings. However, since all the bodies are self-propelling, the thrust force must be equal to the drag force (at steady speed), implying no net force on the body, and hence the wake or flow downstream must be momentumless. For such bodies, where there is no net force, it is difficult to directly define a propulsion efficiency, although it is possible to use some other very different measures like "cost of transportation" to broadly judge performance.

Fluid mechanics of aquatic locomotion at large Reynolds numbers

Previous work on rigid splitter plates in the wake of a bluff body has shown that the primary vortex shedding can be suppressed for sufficiently long splitter plates. In the present work, we study the problem of a hinged-splitter plate in the wake of a circular cylinder. The splitter plate can rotate about the hinge at the base of the cylinder due to the unsteady fluid forces acting on it, and hence the communication between the two sides of the wake is not totally disrupted as in the rigid splitter plate case. In our study, we investigate this problem in the limit where the stiffness and internal damping associated with the hinge are negligible, and the mass ratio of the splitter plate is small. The experiments show that the splitter plate oscillations increase with Reynolds numbers at low values of Re, and are found to reach a saturation amplitude level at higher Re, Re > 4000. This type of saturation amplitude level that appears to continue indefinitely with Re, appears to be related to the fact that there is no structural restoring force, and has been observed previously for transversely oscillating cylinders with no restoring force. In the present case, the saturation tip amplitude level can be up to 0.45 D, where D is the cylinder diameter. For this hinged-rigid splitter plate case, it is found that the splitter plate length to cylinder diameter ratio (L / D) is crucial in determining the character and magnitude of the oscillations. For small splitter plate lengths (L / D ≤ 3.0), the oscillations appear to be nearly periodic with tip amplitudes of about 0.45 D nearly independent of L / D. The nondimensional oscillation frequencies (fD / U) on the other hand are found to continuously vary with L / D from fD / U ≈ 0.2 at L / D = 1 to fD / U ≈ 0.1 at L / D = 3. As the splitter plate length is further increased beyond L / D ≥ 4.0, the character of the splitter plate oscillations suddenly changes. The oscillations become aperiodic with much smaller amplitudes. In this long splitter plate regime, the spectra of the oscillations become broadband, and are reminiscent of the change in character of the wake oscillations seen in the earlier fixed-rigid splitter plate case for L / D ≥ 5.0. In the present case of the hinged-splitter plate, the sudden transition seen as the splitter plate length (L / D) is increased from 3 to 4 may be attributed to the fact that the wake vortices are no longer able to synchronize with the plate motions for larger splitter plate lengths. Hence, as observed in other vortex-induced vibration problems, the oscillations become aperiodic and the amplitude reduces dramatically. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Flow over a cylinder with a hinged-splitter plate

We report an experimental study of a new type of turbulent flow that is driven purely by buoyancy. The flow is due to an unstable density difference, created using brine and water, across the ends of a long (length/diameter=9) vertical pipe. The Schmidt number Sc is 670, and the Rayleigh number (Ra) based on the density gradient and diameter is about 108. Under these conditions the convection is turbulent, and the time-averaged velocity at any point is 'zero'. The Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale, Reλ, is about 65. The pipe is long enough for there to be an axially homogeneous region, with a linear density gradient, about 6-7 diameters long in the midlength of the pipe. In the absence of a mean flow and, therefore, mean shear, turbulence is sustained just by buoyancy. The flow can be thus considered to be an axially homogeneous turbulent natural convection driven by a constant (unstable) density gradient. We characterize the flow using flow visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Measurements show that the mean velocities and the Reynolds shear stresses are zero across the cross-section; the root mean squared (r.m.s.) of the vertical velocity is larger than those of the lateral velocities (by about one and half times at the pipe axis). We identify some features of the turbulent flow using velocity correlation maps and the probability density functions of velocities and velocity differences. The flow away from the wall, affected mainly by buoyancy, consists of vertically moving fluid masses continually colliding and interacting, while the flow near the wall appears similar to that in wall-bound shear-free turbulence. The turbulence is anisotropic, with the anisotropy increasing to large values as the wall is approached. A mixing length model with the diameter of the pipe as the length scale predicts well the scalings for velocity fluctuations and the flux. This model implies that the Nusselt number would scale as Ra1/2 Sc1/2, and the Reynolds number would scale as Ra1/2 Sc-1/2. The velocity and the flux measurements appear to be consistent with the Ra1/2 scaling, although it must be pointed out that the Rayleigh number range was less than 10. The Schmidt number was not varied to check the Sc scaling. The fluxes and the Reynolds numbers obtained in the present configuration are much higher compared to what would be obtained in Rayleigh-Bénard (R-B) convection for similar density differences. © 2009 Cambridge University Press.

Axially homogeneous, zero mean flow buoyancy-driven turbulence in a vertical pipe

An experimental study is carried out to elucidate the structure of a high Reynolds number (∼105) turbulent pulsed jet. Particle image velocimetry measurements showed that the near flow field is dominated by a series of vortex rings with jet-like flows in between. The data show that the vortex rings convect at nearly constant speed of 0.6 Uj (Uj: mean jet exit velocity) and the spacing between the rings assumes a value of about 0.6/St (St: Strouhal number = fd/Uj, where f is the pulsing frequency and d is the nozzle exit diameter). With increasing Strouhal number, the rings are closely spaced and the flow tends to assume a steady jet character at five diameters downstream of the nozzle exit. At lower Strouhal numbers there is a distinct region of jet flow in between the rings. Many of the global characteristics, entrainment, mass and momentum flux are essentially determined by the strength and spacing of the rings which, in turn, depend on St. We show that the increase in momentum is due to both increased momentum flux and overpressure at the exit in accordance with Krueger &amp; Gharib (AIAA J., vol. 43 (4), 2005, p. 792). This increase in momentum comes at the expense of higher energy required to produce the jet. We also present results of organized and random components of the fluctuations and production of the random turbulence in a pulsed jet. The two regions of dominant turbulence production are identified with the ring and the trailing jet shear layers. © 2009 Cambridge University Press.
