In this paper an argon filled coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been studied to understand the detail of power transfer from a unipolar square pulse to plasma during discharge. A dielectric barrier discharge based diffuse pulse discharge and its electrical characteristics are investigated. A quartz coaxial DBD tube filled at different pressures is used in the experiment. A unipolar pulse voltage of different peak voltages and frequencies has been applied to the discharge electrodes for the generation of microdischarges. Two current pulses are used for two consecutive discharges per applied voltage pulse. The second discharge, which occurs at the falling flank of the voltage pulse, is induced by the charges stored on the dielectric barrier during the first discharge. It has been deduced that the power supplied to ignite the first discharge is partly stored to ignite the second discharge when the applied voltage decays. This process ultimately leads to much improved power transfer to the plasma. The knowledge obtained from dynamic processes of the DBDs in the discharge gap explains quantitatively the mechanism of ignition, development and extinction of the DBDs.

Analysis of power in an argon filled pulsed dielectric barrier discharge

The delay logistic map with two types of q-deformations: Tsallis and Quantum-group type are studied. The stability of the logistic map and its bifurcation scheme is analyzed as a function of the deformation and delay parameters. Chaos is suppressed in a certain region of deformation and delay parameter space. By introducing delay, the steady state in one type of deformation is maintained while chaotic behavior is recovered in another type. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Microtubule nanotubes are found in every living eukaryotic cells; these are formed by reversible polymerization of the tubulin protein, and their hollow fibers are filled with uniquely arranged water molecules. Here we measure single tubulin molecule and single brain-neuron extracted microtubule nanowire with and without water channel inside to unravel their unique electronic and optical properties for the first time. We demonstrate that the energy levels of a single tubulin protein and single microtubule made of 40,000 tubulin dimers are identical unlike conventional materials. Moreover, the transmitted ac power and the transient fluorescence decay (single photon count) are independent of the microtubule length. Even more remarkable is the fact that the microtubule nanowire is more conducting than a single protein molecule that constitutes the nanowire. Microtubule's vibrational peaks condense to a single mode that controls the emergence of size independent electronic/optical properties, and automated noise alleviation, which disappear when the atomic water core is released from the inner cylinder. We have carried out several tricky state-of-the-art experiments and identified the electromagnetic resonance peaks of single microtubule reliably. The resonant vibrations established that the condensation of energy levels and periodic oscillation of unique energy fringes on the microtubule surface, emerge as the atomic water core resonantly integrates all proteins around it such that the nanotube irrespective of its size functions like a single protein molecule. Thus, a monomolecular water channel residing inside the protein-cylinder displays an unprecedented control in governing the tantalizing electronic and optical properties of microtubule. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Atomic water channel controlling remarkable properties of a single brain microtubule: Correlating single protein to its supramolecular assembly

An all-solid large mode-area (LMA) chalcogenide-based microstructured core optical fiber (MCOF) is designed and proposed for high power handling in the mid-IR spectral regime, covering the entire second transparency window of the atmosphere (3-5 μm). The core of the proposed specialty fiber is composed of a few rings of high index rods arranged in a pattern of hexagon. Dependence of effective mode area on the pitch and radius of high index rods are studied. Ultra-high effective mode area up to 75,000 μm2 can be achieved over this specific wavelength range while retaining its single-mode characteristic. A negligible confinement loss along with a low dispersion slope (~0.03 ps/km-nm2), relatively low bend loss, and a good beam quality factor (M2~1.17) should make this LMA fiber design attractive for fabrication as a potential candidate suitable for high power, passive applications at the mid-IR wavelength regime. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Ultra-large mode area microstructured core chalcogenide fiber design for mid-IR beam delivery

We report the design of a highly nonlinear holey fiber for making a mid-infrared light source at 4.36 μm. A solid-core chalcogenide-based index-guided holey microstructured optical fiber with circular air holes has been exploited to numerically demonstrate wavelength translation via four-wave mixing. We employ a thulium-doped fiber laser as the pump with a power of 5 W. Our simulations indicate that a maximum parametric gain of 20.5 dB with a bandwidth of 16 nm is achievable in this designed fiber, resulting in a power conversion efficiency of more than 17.6%. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

All-fiber broadband mid-IR source through wavelength translation: Design and simulation

A simple method for the preparation of magnetic nanocomposites consisting of cobalt ferrite (CF; CoFe2O4) nanoparticles, polybenzoxazine (PB), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and linear low-density polyethylene-g-maleic anhydride (LgM) is described. The composites were prepared by the formation of benzoxazine (BA)-CF nanopowders followed by melt blending with LLDPE and the thermal curing of BA. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, universal testing machine measurement, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The composites consisting of LLDPE, PB, and LgM (47.5L-47.5PB-5LgM) exhibited a higher tensile strength (23.82 MPa) than pure LLDPE and a greater elongation at break (6.11%) than pure PB. The tensile strength of the composites decreased from 19.92 to 18.55 MPa with increasing CF loading (from 14.25 to 33.25 wt %). The saturation magnetization of the composites containing 33.25 wt % CF was 18.28 emu/g, and it decreased with decreasing amount of CF in the composite. The composite films exhibited mechanical flexibility and magnetic properties. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Synthesis, characterization, and properties of flexible magnetic nanocomposites of cobalt ferrite-polybenzoxazine-linear low-density polyethylene

Recently it has been realized that for high current applications a radial channel Pseudospark Switch (PSS) is a right choice whereas a coaxial PSS is better suited for medium power applications. An effort has been made to design and develop a high current PSS for pulse power applications and the initial results of the same are presented in this paper. It utilizes linear discharge apertures (length greater than width) in the electrodes geometry. The linear aperture helps in significantly higher current conduction without discharge constriction. The electrostatic simulations of the geometry have been carried out using Omni Track code to analyze voltage penetration through the linear apertures. To study the voltage profile, discharge phenomenon and dynamics of the charge particles in the radial channel PSS, a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code 'Oopic-Pro' has also been used. The simulated results have been applied as a feedback to design and develop this PSS on the specified parameters. A demountable high current pseudospark switch with radial discharge channel is ready for experimentation. © 2013 IEEE.

Design and development of a high current pseudospark switch for pulse power applications

A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based light source has been developed for the sterilization of water. For this a single barrier DBD cell with quartz (low dielectric loss and high breakdown strength) as dielectric has been used. Six numbers of linear strips of titanium gold are coated using magnetron sputtering technique on the diametrical opposite portions of the outer surface of the quartz tube. A helical tungsten electrode has been used as cathode to which a pulsed high voltage signal has been applied to strike the discharge. The outer striped electrodes are grounded. In this paper an effort has been made to evaluate the germicidal effect of the developed DBD tube. A series of experiments have been carried and decontamination study of autoclaved water has been performed using air as a working gas. The developed DBD cell is non-toxic and has advantages over the other conventional methods like dry heat, auto clave, γ-ray irradiation. Sterilization of the E. Coli bacteria (diluted in water) has been performed using this DBD source and results are illustrated. © 2013 IEEE.
