Stability analysis of stratified multiphase flow for a spanwise system of rotation plays a pivotal role in micromixing and micromachines. In several such systems, centrifugal actuation is the driving force, which creates a pressure gradient in a rotating channel and Coriolis force enhances mixing in a short span by destabilizing the flow. Here, we focus on the impact of the Coriolis force on a rotating two-fluid flow through a microchannel, which is miscible in nature, having small viscosity difference and thereby forming a thin diffusive interface between fluids due to viscosity stratification. Modal stability analysis is used to estimate the critical flow parameters which are, in turn, responsible for regulating the instability mechanism for different viscosity contrasts and mixed layer thicknesses. Usually, viscosity stratified flow with respect to streamwise disturbance becomes more unstable for a thinner mixed layer. On the contrary, our numerical computation confirms a completely discrepant scenario by considering Coriolis force-driven instability of a miscible flow system on account of spanwise disturbances. Possible physical mechanisms for the same are discussed in terms of base flow pattern and the energy fluctuation between the perturbed and base flow. Comparison of three-dimensional disturbances of the flow field, in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions (for two different viscosity ratios), is executed to provide an insight into the dynamics of the flow system. Distributions of the velocity perturbations display a critical bonding between the vortices near and away from the mixed layer. These vortices are, in turn, responsible for the variation in instability mechanism with respect to different viscosity ratios and rotational directions. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Coriolis force-driven instabilities in stratified miscible layers on a rotationally actuated microfluidic platform

In this paper, a novel fusion framework is proposed for night-vision applications such as pedestrian recognition, vehicle navigation and surveillance. The underlying concept is to combine low-light visible and infrared imagery into a single output to enhance visual perception. The proposed framework is computationally simple since it is only realized in the spatial domain. The core idea is to obtain an initial fused image by averaging all the source images. The initial fused image is then enhanced by selecting the most salient features guided from the root mean square error RMSE and fractal dimension of the visual and infrared images to obtain the final fused image. Extensive experiments on different scene imaginary demonstrate that it is consistently superior to the conventional image fusion methods in terms of visual and quantitative evaluations. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation.

A fractal dimension based framework for night vision fusion

In this paper, a large scale public dataset containing floor plan images and their annotations is presented. BRIDGE (Building plan Repository for Image Description Generation, and Evaluation) dataset contains more than 13000 images of the floor plan and annotations collected from various websites, as well as publicly available floor plan images in the research domain. The images in BRIDGE also has annotations for symbols, region graphs, and paragraph descriptions. The BRIDGE dataset will be useful for symbol spotting, caption and description generation, scene graph synthesis, retrieval and many other tasks involving building plan parsing. In this paper, we also present an extensive experimental study for tasks like furniture localization in a floor plan, caption and description generation, on the proposed dataset showing the utility of BRIDGE. © 2019 IEEE.

BRIDGE: Building plan repository for image description generation, and evaluation

In the recent past, due to the boost in digitization a huge volume of data (BigData) related to building and architectures has been accumulated. The sources of such data are interviews, blogs, websites, etc. These descriptions has details about the interior of a building. For humans it is easy to interpret and imagine its structure and arrangements of furniture. Automatic synthesis of real-world images from text descriptions has been explored in the computer vision community. However, there is no such attempt in the area of document images, like floor plans. Even though, Floor plan synthesis from sketches, as well as data-driven models, were proposed earlier, this is the first attempt to automatically render building floor plan images from textual description. Here, the input is a natural language description of the internal structure and furniture arrangements within a house, and the output is the 2D floor plan image of the same. We have experimented on publicly available benchmark floor plan datasets. We were able to render realistic synthesized floor plan images from the description written in English. © 2019 IEEE.

A novel watermarking technique for multimedia security

In this paper, we consider the Galerkin method to approximate the solution of Fredholm–Hammerstein integral equations of second kind with weakly singular kernels, using Legendre polynomial bases. We prove that for both the algebraic and logarithmic kernels, the Legendre Galerkin method has order of convergence O(n−r), whereas the iterated Legendre Galerkin method converges with the order O(n−r−α+[Formula presented]) for the algebraic kernel, and order O(lognn−r−[Formula presented]) for logarithmic kernel in both L2-norm and infinity norm, where n is the highest degree of the Legendre polynomial employed in the approximation and r is the smoothness of the solution. We also propose the Legendre multi-Galerkin and iterated Legendre multi-Galerkin methods. We prove that iterated Legendre multi-Galerkin method has order of convergence O((1+clogn)n−r−2α+[Formula presented]) for the algebraic kernel, and order of convergence O((logn)2(1+clogn)n−r−[Formula presented]) for logarithmic kernel in both L2-norm and infinity norm. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Superconvergence results of Legendre spectral projection methods for weakly singular Fredholm–Hammerstein integral equations

We synthesized Hg alloyed CdTe quantum dots (Cd1−xHgxTe) using hydrothermal route. N-acetyl-cysteine is used as the capping agent for water dispersed Cd1−xHgxTe (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5) quantum dots. The diameter of the synthesized quantum dots is 3.8 ± 0.5 nm, as estimated from high resolution transmission electron micrographs. The mercury molar fraction modified band gap engineering is demonstrated with band gap changing from 2.5 eV for CdTe quantum dots to 1.25 eV for Cd0.5Hg0.5Te. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Band gap engineering of cdte quantum dots by hg alloying in infrared region

In this study, the authors propose a framework SUGAMAN (Supervised and Unified framework using Grammar and Annotation Model for Access and Navigation). SUGAMAN is a Hindi word meaning ‘easy passage from one place to another’. SUGAMAN synthesises textual description from a given floor plan image, usable by visually impaired to navigate by understanding the arrangement of rooms and furniture. It is the first framework for describing a floor plan and giving direction for obstacle-free movement within a building. The model learns five classes of room categories from 1355 room image samples under a supervised learning paradigm. These learned annotations are fed into a description synthesis framework to yield a holistic description of a floor plan image. Authors demonstrate the performance of various supervised classifiers on room learning and provided a comparative analysis of system generated and human-written descriptions. The contribution of this study includes a novel framework for description generation from document images with graphics while proposing a new feature representing the floor plans, text annotations for a publicly available data set, and an algorithm for door to door obstacle avoidance navigation. This work can be applied to areas like understanding floor plans and design of historical monuments, and retrieval. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2019

Sugaman: Describing floor plans for visually impaired by annotation learning and proximity-based grammar

We study the impact of a random environment on lifetimes of coherent systems with dependent components. There are two combined sources of this dependence. One results from the dependence of the components of the coherent system operating in a deterministic environment and the other is due to dependence of components of the system sharing the same random environment. We provide different sets of sufficient conditions for the corresponding stochastic comparisons and consider various scenarios. namely. (i) two different (as a specific case, identical) coherent systems operate in the same random environment; (ii) two coherent systems operate in two different random environments; (iii) one of the coherent systems operates in a random environment and the other in a deterministic environment. Some examples are given to illustrate the proposed reasoning.

COMPARING LIFETIMES OF COHERENT SYSTEMS WITH DEPENDENT COMPONENTS OPERATING IN RANDOM ENVIRONMENTS

In this paper, a simple design strategy is proposed for obtaining broadband, polarization insensitive metasurface, for radar cross section (RCS) reduction. Two different unit cells, circular patch and square ring structures are chosen as basic meta-atoms. For significant enhancement of RCS reduction bandwidth, sixteen supercells comprised of the variation of the two unit cells are distributed randomly in a checkerboard setting, resulting in a diffused backward scattering. The proposed metasurface have a wide-band, polarization insensitive RCS reduction spectra. © 2019 IEEE.
