We propose an implicit interval Newton algorithm for finding a root of a nonlinear equation. Our implicit process avoids the burden of selecting an initial point very close to the root as required by the classical Newton method. The conventional interval Newton method converges quadratically, while our modified algorithm converges cubically under some conditions and bi-quadratically under other conditions. These convergence results are proved using an image extension of a Taylor expansion. The algorithm is illustrated by numerical examples, and we provide a comparison between the existing interval Newton method and our proposed method.

New higher order root finding algorithm using interval analysis

Multimodal medical image fusion is an important task for the retrievalof complementary information from medical images. In this chapter,a novel framework for multimodal medical image fusion is proposed,which enables the decomposition of input images into low- and high frequencybands using framelet transform and utilizes local visibility andsmallest univalue segment assimilating nucleus (SUSAN) features fusionrules for coefficient selection at different levels. The final fused image isobtained from the superposition of selected coefficients in bot low- andhigh-frequency bands. The fused medical image that is produced by thisframework presents a visually better representation than the input images.Experimental results highlights the expediency and suitability of the proposedalgorithm and the efficiency is carried by the comparison madebetween proposed and existing algorithm. © 2015 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Multimodal medical image fusion based on SUSAN feature in framelet domain

Spatio-temporal instability of miscible two-fluid symmetric flow in a horizontal slippery channel is considered. Both fluids have the same density but different viscosity. A smooth viscosity stratification is created by a thin mixed layer between the fluids due to the presence of two species/scalars, which are diffusing at different rates. Our study suggests the existence of a rapidly growing absolute unstable mode for higher viscosity ratio with a highly viscous fluid close to the slippery channel wall. This instability is less stronger in the case of the equivalent single component two-fluid flow. The viscosity stratified single component (SC) and double-diffusive (DD) slippery flows are absolutely unstable for a wide range of parameter values, when a highly viscous fluid is adjacent to the slippery wall and the mixed layer is close to the channel wall with slip. The instability can be either enhanced or suppressed by wall slip and this is dependent on the location of mixed layer, inertial effects, diffusivity and the log-mobility ratios of the faster and slower diffusing species. This suggests that one can achieve early transition to turbulence due to the absolute instability in a viscosity stratified channel flow by making the channel walls hydrophobic/rough/porous with small permeability, which can be modelled by the Navier-slip condition. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Absolute and convective instabilities in double-diffusive two-fluid flow in a slippery channel

The primary aim of this paper is to analyze solar power variability. Ground-based measurements of solar photovoltaic power are used for the forecasting of 43-kW A-Si SPV system. In this study, we describe the variability in the power production of solar photovoltaic plant at IIT, Jodhpur. Solar PV generation forecasting is playing a key role in accurate solar power dispatchability as well as scheduling of PV power for hybrid power generation systems. The actual power produced by a PV power system varies according to variation in meteorological parameters and efficiency of PV system components. For the purpose of forecasting as per the schedule in the Indian power sector, a time slot of 15 min is considered for each forecasting. The proposed generalized neural network technique will be appropriated for modeling of solar power variability forecasting. In this paper, we used generalized neural network for forecasting the PV power variability. © Springer India 2015.

Ground-based measurement for solar power variability forecasting modeling using generalized neural network

In the emerging photo-voltaic markets worldwide the use of appropriate estimation of the operating performance of the grid-connected PV systems is becoming more and more crucial. The widely used performance indices that are used to analyze the system performance with respect to energy output, solar resource and the effect of system losses in its various components are total yield, final yield/specific yield, performance ratio, PVUSA rating, and performance indicator based on ratio of ac power at PTC to dc power at STC. This paper presents performance analysis of a 43 kW amorphous-silicon thin-film grid-connected PV system. Recorded plant monitoring data during July 2011 to July 2014 is used for the analysis. Major operation and maintenance issues encountered in last three years are also reported. © 2014 IEEE.

Performance monitoring of 43 kW thin-film grid-connected roof-top solar PV system

Zirconium carbide-nitride absorber (ZrC-ZrN) and zirconium reflector tandem structures were prepared on glass and aluminum substrate, in conjunction with zirconium oxide (ZrOx) anti-reflection coatings, using DC/RF magnetron sputtering system. The solar absorption properties of zirconium carbide-nitride absorber layers were optimized by controlling nitrogen flow during synthesis process for optimal solar thermal response. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were carried out on fabricated absorber-reflector tandem structures to understand the structure-property correlation. We absorbed strong dependence of zirconium nitride fraction on solar thermal performance. We observed enhanced solar absorptance α ∼ 0.86 and thermal emittance ϵ ∼ 0.05 at room temperature for structures fabricated with optimized synthesis parameters. The optimized structures are stable up to 150 °C in the air without any significant degradation in their solar performance. © 2016. The Authors.

Zirconium carbide-nitride composite matrix based solar absorber structures on glass and aluminum substrates for solar thermal applications

The linear stability characteristics of pressure-driven miscible two-fluid flow with same density and varying viscosities in a channel with velocity slip at the wall are examined.Aprominent feature of the instability is that only a band ofwave numbers is unstable whatever the Reynolds number is, whereas shorter wavelengths and smaller wave numbers are observed to be stable. The stability characteristics are different from both the limiting cases of interface dominated flows and continuously stratified flows in a channel with velocity slip at the wall. The flow system is destabilizing when a more viscous fluid occupies the region closer to the wall with slip. For this configuration a new mode of instability, namely the overlap mode, appears for high mass diffusivity of the two fluids. This mode arises due to the overlap of critical layer of dominant instability with the mixed layer of varying viscosity. The critical layer contains a location in the flowdomain atwhich the base flowvelocity equals the phase speed of themost unstable disturbance. Such amode also occurs in the corresponding flow in a rigid channel, but absent in either of the above limiting cases of flow in a channel with slip. The flow is unstable at low Reynolds numbers for a wide range of wave numbers for low mass diffusivity, mimicking the interfacial instability of the immiscible flows. A configuration with less viscous fluid adjacent to the wall is more stable at moderate miscibility and this is also in contrast with the result for the limiting case of interface dominated flows in a channel with slip, where the above configuration ismore unstable. It is possible to achieve stabilization or destabilization of miscible two-fluid flow in a channel with wall slip by appropriately choosing the viscosity of the fluid layer adjacent to the wall. In addition, the velocity slip at the wall has a dual role in the stability of flow system and the trend is influenced by the location of the mixed layer, the location of more viscous fluid and the mass diffusivity of the two fluids. It is well known that creating a viscosity contrast in a particularway in a rigid channel delays the occurrence of turbulence in a rigid channel. The results of the present study show that the flow system can be either stabilized or destabilized by designing the walls of the channel as hydrophobic surfaces, modeled by velocity slip at the walls. The study provides another effective strategy to control the flow system. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Linear stability analysis of miscible two-fluid flow in a channel with velocity slip at the walls

Stochastic orders are useful to compare the lifetimes of two systems. We discuss both active redundancy as well as standby redundancy. We show that redundancy at the component level is superior to that at the system level with respect to different stochastic orders, for different types of systems. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Component redundancy versus system redundancy in different stochastic orderings

We study the system (series/parallel) where the components are randomly chosen from two different batches. We assume that one batch is more reliable than the other in some stochastic sense. In the case of series systems we show that, under certain conditions, lifetime of one system dominates that of the other in different stochastic orders viz. hazard rate, down shifted hazard rate and likelihood ratio orders. Further, we show that the same principle holds for the reversed hazard rate and the likelihood ratio orders in the case of parallel systems. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Some results on series and parallel systems of randomized components

The Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur (IITJ) has been monitoring and recording all the parameter of 101 kW (43.30 kW A-Si PV system located in Block 1 and 58.08 kW C-Si PV system in Block 2) grid tied solar photovoltaic system over the 4 year. The paper present the operational data 43.30 kW amorphous silicon (A-Si) based PV system located at Block 1 and 58.08 kW crystalline silicon based PV system at Block 2 of IIT Jodhpur. This paper helps in a study of the performance and consistency of this system. This paper will estimate the theoretical and actual Power output, Energy yield of the both PV systems. During the year, the PV systems in Jodhpur, India have generated a 74922 kWh by C-Si PV and 55910 kWh solar energy by A-Si PV system. As a whole, the location of Solar PV system is the primary reason of energy variability and system production. © 2014 IEEE.
