This work examines the role of capital and psychological resources in the achievements of high achievers. It investigates the integrative role of psychological resources and capital in the achievement process. In the study, we chose four Indian high achievers: two first-generation achievers and two non-first-generation achievers - JRD Tata, Dhirubhai Ambani, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Srinivasa Ramanujan. The written biographies were analysed. The biographical analysis shows that while capital plays a major role in the success of non-first-generation achievers, psychological resources are more important in first-generation achievers. The results indicate that psychological resources are important in channelizing capital for achievement. It was also found useful for the generation and maintenance of various forms of capital. Though hard work and inborn talent cannot be ignored, the role of capital and psychological resources must not be underestimated in the process of attaining high achievement. © 2015, National Academy of Psychology (NAOP) India.

Capital, Psychological Resources and High Achievement: a Biographical Analysis of the Accomplishment of High Achievers

Ecoambiguity, Community and Development takes stock of cultural and environmental contexts in many different regions of the world by exploring literature and film. Artists and scholars working in the social ecology, environmental justice and postcolonial arenas have long recognized that as soon as we tug on a thread of “ecodegradation,” we generally find it linked to some form of cultural oppression. The reverse is also often true. In the spirit of postcolonial ecocriticism, the studies collected by Scott Slovic, R. Swarnalatha and Vidya Sarveswaran emphasize the impossibility of disentangling environmental and cultural problems. While not all the authors explicitly invoke Karen Thornber's term “ecoambiguity” or the concepts and terminology of postcolonial ecocriticism, their articles frequently bring to light various ironies. For example, the fact that Ukrainian environmental experience in the twenty-first century is defined by one of the world's most infamous industrial disasters, the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986, yet Ukrainian culture, like many throughout the world, actually cherishes a profound, even animistic, attachment to the wonders of nature. The repetition of this and other paradoxes in human cultural responses to the more-than-human world reinforces our sense of the congruities and idiosyncrasies of human culture. Every human culture, regardless of its condition of economic and industrial development, has produced its own version of “environmental literature and art”—but the nuances of this work reflect that culture's precise social and geophysical circumstances. In various ways, these stories of community and development from across the planet converge and diverge, as told and explained by distinguished scholars, many of whom come from the cultures represented in these articles.

Pandemic Influenza Planning and Response in India, 1949-2009

Despite the creation of the Kalbeliya (Kālbeliyā) dance form in the 1980s, it was recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2010. Rajasthani "Gypsy" performances, featuring a dance designed by the nomadic Kalbeliya community, have quickly become popular among tourists in India as well as on Western world music stages. The state of Rajasthan, where the Kalbeliyas hail from, is celebrated as "India's heritage state" by the Indian government as it seeks to promote tourism and the international dissemination of Indian culture through performances and festivals. In this paper, I sketch the history of the Kalbeliya dance form from its origins in the 1980s through to the UNESCO nomination in 2010. Moreover, I discuss the effects of its recognition as a world heritage dance tradition. The official approval of the Kalbeliya dance form as a heritage activity further highlights the challenges to UNESCO's candidate selection process. This paper aims to explain the reasons for the nomination of the Kalbeliya dance form (how and why UNESCO was persuaded to recognize it as a suitable candidate) by connecting this to the continued processes of nationalism and romanticism, the economic strategies adopted by the cultural tourism industry and the commodification and commercialization of Indian folk arts. © 2015 Oriental Institute (ASCR), Prague.

Intangible inventions: The Kalbeliya Gypsy dance form, from its creation to UNESCO recognition

Word sense disambiguation (WSD) can be defined as a task that focuses on estimating the right sense of a word in its context. It is important as a pre-processing step in information extraction, machine translation, question answering and many other natural language processing tasks. Ambiguity in Word Sense arises when a particular word has more than one possible sense. Finding the correct sense requires thorough knowledge regarding words. This information of words is often derived from the sources such as words appearing in the context of the target word, part of speech information of the words in the neighbour, syntactical relations and local collocations. Our main aim in this paper is to develop an automatic system for WSD in Assamese using a Naive Bayes classifier. This is the first work to the best of our knowledge on developing an automatic WSD system for Assamese language. Assamese, the main language of most of the people in North-Eastern part of India is a morphologically very rich language. In Assamese WSD is a challenging task because a word can behave differently when combined with a suffix or a sequence of suffixes to have an entirely different sense. WSD often makes use of lexical resources such as WordNet, lexicon, annotated or unannotated corpora etc for its process of disambiguation. © 2014 IEEE.

Assamese word sense disambiguation using supervised learning

The idea of the self plays a pivotal role in human life. The most common way of conceptualizing the self may be called the free-floating or separative self. This amounts to treating the self as something away from the web of life and as something in need of protection and aggrandizement. Another major characteristic of the free-floating self is the belief in free will. There have been many studies questioning the empirical validity of free will, and this takes cudgels against the free-floating self-conception also. Even though some traits associated with this kind of self-conception might have had evolutionary advantages, it is not difficult to see that the moorings of many human problems can be traced to the separative self-conception. Therefore, efforts need to be made to develop an alternate way of understanding the self. It is contended in this chapter that the conception of the free-floating self is primarily a case of gut feeling of certainty and our present environment is conducive to overcome this inveterate way of understanding ourselves. © Springer India 2014.

Reconceptualizing the separative self

The concept of sustainability, as originally developed in environmental ethics and associated with sustainable development (SD), is gaining attention in the business sector. Ethical responsibilities of a business actually address sustainable development in three dimensions: economic, ecological and social. The SD framework gives a new direction to the way Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was previously comprehended. This paper argues that the SD framework of sustainability and sustainable development is a more appropriate choice. This article reviews the CSR evolution and finds its essence at every decade for the past seventy years. The next section of the article discusses the limitations of the CSR approach, the importance of sustainability in business and introduces the sustainable development framework as a guideline for better social responsibility. There is a need for strong policy formulation for well-structured sustainable businesses where there is balance between all three pillars of profitability, society and environment. Mere CSR policies would not make a company sustainable.

Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Ethics in Action

In each and every natural language nouns play a very important role. A subcategory of noun is proper noun. They represent the names of person, location, organization etc. The task of recognizing the proper nouns in a text and categorizing them into some classes such as person, location, organization and other is called Named Entity Recognition. This is a very essential step of many natural language processing applications that makes the process of information extraction easier. Named Entity Recognition (NER) in most of the Indian languages has been performed using rule-based, supervised and unsupervised approaches. In this work our target language is Assamese, the language spoken by most of the people in North-Eastern part of India and particularly in Assam. In Assamese language, Named Entity Recognition has been performed using the rule based and suffix stripping based approaches. Supervised learning technique is more useful and can be easily adapted to new domains compared to rule based approaches. This paper reports the first work in Assamese NER using a machine learning technique. In this paper Assamese Named Entity Recognition is performed using Naïve Bayes classifier. Since feature extraction plays the most important role in getting better performance in any machine learning technique, in this work our aim is to put forward a description of a few important features related to Assamese NER and performance measure of the system using these features. © 2014 IEEE.
