The transient components are introduced in the extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines during the faulty conditions. The transients may damage the power system equipments as well as may also lead to the mal-operation of the equipments utilized for a specific application in the power network These transient components are intensified in the presence of distributed generation (DG) sources such as wind and solar power generation. Further, these transients may affect the functioning of series compensation of the lines in the presence of renewable energy sources. The analysis of faults on the series compensated EHV transmission lines in the presence of DG sources may help to design suitable series compensation as well as the generator sizes. This paper addresses the effect of power system faults on the voltage and current waveforms in the presence of wind generation and series compensated EHV transmission lines. The detailed simulation study of transmission line faults with and without series compensation in the presence of 3 MW wind power generation has been carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results show the impacts of faults on the system voltages and load currents with and without series compensation of the lines in the presence of wind power generation.

Analysis of Faults in Power System Network in the Presence of Series Compensated EHV Transmission Lines

This paper seeks to examine the ambiguities inherent in the ways in which the notion of Indian modernity is etched out in our social imaginery, especially in urban middle class-centric ways. To do so, it examines the novel Chowringhee (1962) by Shankar and its 1968 film adaptation (directed by Satyajit Ray). This paper argues-following Partha Chatterjee's theory of andar-bahir and Dipesh Chakrabarty's theory of two histories-that the plural, hybrid, modern Indian subject can perhaps be better accessed by examining the interstices between the subject positions one is simultaneously occupying. Examining subjectivity, as performed in intersectional, liminal spaces, rather than exclusive binaries-allows for a more comprehensive representation of the hybrid space and time inhabited by the modern Indian subject and addresses the anxieties inherent in this hybridity.

Heterogeneous time in indian modernity: Reading Chowringhee

Over the past three decades, a series of documentary films featuring performing artists from Rajasthan have been produced. Extending the scholarly notion that the Roma historically migrated from India, these documentaries often portray present-day Rajasthani communities as descendants of Roma ancestors in India, and therefore as 'Indian Gypsies'. These 'realistic' films have greatly influenced public perceptions on Gypsy cultural representations and express identity politics of Gypsy unity, but have hardly been studied so far. To gain insight into both the portrayal of Rajasthani artists as Gypsies and the representation of the Indian background of the Roma, this article presents the results of a contextualized content analysis of the films, complemented by ethnographic research. It shows that the image of the Indian Gypsy is grounded in the discursive interplay between Roma politics, commercial music industries and self-exoticizing marketing by Rajasthani artists.

Representing Rajasthani roots: Indian Gypsy identity and origins in documentary films

Intersectional analyses represent an enormously important advance in understanding how people identify whether as individuals, families or other social groups. However, the overwhelming majority of research taking an intersectional approach to date is hampered by limiting its analysis to the confines of any given country. Such “domestic intersectionality” does not reflect the growing transnationalization of people’s lives and family matters given that over 200 million people now live outside the nation where they were born. A key objective of this article is to make a case explicitly for broadening intersectional analyses to the transnational scale. Moreover, the article argues that feminist analysis of families is greatly enhanced when their standpoints are examined simultaneously at multiple social scales including the intimate, local, national and transnational scales. Intersections of gender, class, ethnicity, race, nation, etc. can and typically do shift as we move across scales of analysis. Thus, a family who enjoys a privileged standpoint in their homeland community can, and often does, occupy a marginalized standpoint abroad, albeit marginalization vis-à-vis the society in the country of relocation and enhanced privilege concurrently in the home community. Within the same transnational family—indeed within any family—there will be variability in individuals’ standpoints as well. This article provides a blueprint for how such multi-scalar intersectional analyses can be accomplished and then executes it for one set of transnational families—Hindu Bengalis who conduct their family life between India and South Florida. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Scaling Intersectionality: Advancing Feminist Analysis of Transnational Families

In India, health inequality, rooted in structural elements of the public healthcare system, is a topic of much concern and discussion in research literature. However, very few articles have approached this persistent problem from a theoretical standpoint. This article addresses this gap by employing the social justice framework of the Health Capability Paradigm (HCP). After critically analyzing some features of the Indian healthcare system, the article argues that some public healthcare system features not only cause health inequalities, but more specifically cause inequities in central health capabilities to avoid escapable diseases and premature death. To address such inequities, the article argues from an HCP perspective that the Indian healthcare system should (a) revise the national health policy's underlying vision of health, (b) reshape its three-tiered public healthcare system to deliver healthcare services to all, and (c) focus on core HCP concepts such as shared health governance and shortfall inequality as guiding principles to provide universal health coverage to all. © 2015 Human Development and Capability Association.

India, Health Inequities, and a Fair Healthcare Provision: A Perspective from Health Capability

In the context of clinical and non-clinical biomedical practices, negligence is usually understood as a lapse of a specific professional duty by a healthcare worker or by a medical facility. This paper tries to delineate systemic negligence as another kind of negligence in the context of health systems, particularly in developing countries, that needs to be recognized and addressed. Systemic negligence is not just a mere collection of stray incidences of medical errors and system failures in a health system, but is proposed in this paper as a more pervasive kind of neglect. Several non-medical factors, such as lack of social and political will, also contribute to it and hence is more difficult to address in a health system. This paper argues that recognizing systemic negligence and including it research agenda have special moral importance for researchers in developing world bioethics, public health ethics and for health activists in the developing world. For, it can be a potent health system barrier, and can seriously impair efforts to ensure patient safety, particularly in the weaker health systems. As it erodes accountability in a health system, addressing it is also important for the twin goals of ensuring patient safety and improving health system performance. Above all, it needs to be addressed because the tolerance of its persistence in a health system seems to undervalue health as a social good. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Systemic Negligence: Why It Is Morally Important for Developing World Bioethics

Despite technological progresses and improved understanding of biological systems, discovery of novel drugs is an inefficient, arduous and expensive process. Research and development cost of drugs is unreasonably high, largely attributed to the high attrition rate of candidate drugs due to adverse drug reactions. Computational methods for accurate prediction of drug side effects, rooted in empirical data of drugs, have the potential to enhance the efficacy of the drug discovery process. Identification of features critical for specifying side effects would facilitate efficient computational procedures for their prediction. We devised a generalized ordinary canonical correlation model for prediction of drug side effects based on their chemical properties as well as their target profiles. While the former is based on 2D and 3D chemical features, the latter enumerates a systems-level property of drugs. We find that the model incorporating chemical features outperforms that incorporating target profiles. Furthermore we identified the 2D and 3D chemical properties that yield best results, thereby implying their relevance in specifying adverse drug reactions.

Phenotypic side effects prediction by optimizing correlation with chemical and target profiles of drugs

Embodied approach to cognition has taken roots in cognitive studies with developments in diverse fields such as robotics, artificial life and cognitive linguistics. Taking cue from the metaphor of a Watt governor, this approach stresses on the coupling between the organism and the environment and the continuous nature of the cognitive processes. This results in questioning the viability of computational–representational understanding of mind as a comprehensive theory of cognition. The paper, after giving an overview of embodied approach based on some examples from conceptual metaphor theory, looks into a special case of Orwell’s problem in cognitive science. The problem is that there is so much evidence for embodiment to be true, yet there is little understanding of the same. I shall try to solve this problem by pointing out that it is our inveterate habits of perceiving ourselves that makes the embodied approach appear implausible. Studies on free will as well as the importance of the unconscious in overall cognitive processing raise challenging questions on our self-conception. A revision in the self-conception in the light of these findings will pave the way for a better appreciation of the embodied approach to cognition. © 2013, Springer-Verlag London.
