Estimation of jitter in early design cycle of an SoC is necessary to avoid jitter budget conflicts in the design. In this paper, an analysis of power supply induced jitter in a commonly used voltage mode driver architecture in serial links is discussed. The circuit used for the analysis is designed in 28nm FD-SOI technology but the analysis is technology independent. Jitter induced by noise in power delivery networks is analyzed by a transfer function from power supply to the output by a small signal equivalent model. The analysis can be extended generically for System-On-Chip (SoC) level design considerations. © 2016 IEEE.

An analysis of power supply induced jitter for a voltage mode driver in high speed serial links

A conceptual design methodology is proposed for event-triggered based power system control. The event-triggering mechanism is adopted to reduce the communication burden between origin of the remote control signal and the controller location. The remote signal is transmitted to the controller location only when a pre-defined state dependent event-triggering condition, is satisfied. The triggering condition is derived from a stability criterion, and is monitored continuously by a separate event-monitoring unit located at the origin of the remote signal. The stability of the resulting closed loop system is guaranteed via the input-to-state stability (ISS) technique. The proposed event triggered mechanism is implemented on single machine infinite bus test power system. The validation of proposed mechanism is carried out through the simulation studies on MATLAB/Simulink platform. The numerical results show the efficacy of the controller in managing the communication channel usage without compromising the stated system stability objectives. © 2016 IEEE.

Conceptual analysis and representation of event-triggering mechanism in power system

In developing countries like India, adulteration in the milk consumed by the population presents stern implications as tarnishing of the same poses serious issues, such as health deterioration, corruption, and so on. There are many adulterants that are added to milk, including water, flour, starch, and even urea, in quantitative measures making it undetectable. There are many devices in the market to measure adulteration in milk but most of them are bulky, require large sample volume, and need a technical operator for working. In the recent decade, microfluidics has emerged as a huge market for biomedical research. It has paved the pathway for a quick, robust, and plug-and-play device for various applications. This paper describes a low-cost, durable, and simple optofluidic microviscometer fabricated by the stereolithography technique. The device operation is based on the linear relationship between dynamic viscosity and channel width derived from the flow of two immiscible fluids inside a channel. The principle of operation is based on the modified Hagen-Poiseuille flow equation. The working principle is the viscosity-dependent capture of the microchannel width by the fluids flowing inside the microchannel under the laminar flow based on the pressure gradient between the inlets and the outlet. In this paper, around 60 milk samples with various adulteration ratios of various adulterants ranging from 1% to 10% have been tested. A best fit curve for every adulterant was defined, and the device was found to be accurate enough to measure the entire range of adulteration ratios with a high accuracy of 0.95. © 2016 IEEE.

Rapid and Automated Measurement of Milk Adulteration Using a 3D Printed Optofluidic Microviscometer (OMV)

Data mining has been used as a technology in various applications of engineering, sciences and others to analysis data of systems and to solve problems. Its applications further extend towards detecting cyber-attacks. We are presenting our work with simple and less efforts similar to data mining which detects email based phishing attacks. This work digs html contents of emails and web pages referred. Also domains and domain related authority details of these links, script codes associated to web pages are analyzed to conclude for the probability of phishing attacks. © 2015 IEEE.

DC scanner: Detecting phishing attack

Copy on write technique to modify a shared memory page has been a novel idea by keeping the original page unchanged and modifying a duplicate copy of it. The modifiable content in a page can range from one byte to a complete page. The process which owns the page to be modified is kept suspended until the whole page is copied down. Page copying is done without caring the size of modifiable content. Process suspension and page content copying take further time. Also minor page fault is raised as further activity. COW technique, in virtual machines, to save redundant physical memory space is resulting today in memory disclosure attacks. Our work BMCOW as bytes modification & COW modifies shared pages in a way such that COW works on only unreferenced bytes of the pages and thus it avoids extra time of modification process. This avoids any known timing based attacks on virtual machines' memory. © 2015 IEEE.

BMCOW: An approach to modify shared page

For electrical characterization of bio-molecules and to make metallic contacts with the sensing element e.g. nano-wires, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Graphene etc, the stability and minimization of contact resistance are always desirable, which is really challenging and needs development of simple and low-cost technology. This paper reports reusable silicon shadow mask, fabricated using conventional photolithography process has minimum gap size of 1 μm to 5 μm to make stable metallic contacts to the objects of few microns size. The fabricated shadow masks not only provide low cost patterning but also essential, when chemical free lithography is required to make contacts with bio-molecules, CNTs, graphene etc. E-beam metal deposition was carried out using fabricated shadow mask, feature sizes of shadow and the transferred pattern confirms the perfect use of mask. The metallic contacts on the dispersed single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were also made using this mask, followed by electrical characterization of the SWNTs chemiresistors. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Reusable silicon shadow mask with sub-5 μm gap for low cost patterning

Power line communication (PLC) deals with the transmission of power as well as data through the use of power lines. It is an emerging field of communication for the home area network of smart grid. The performance of a PLC system is significantly affected by the presence of the additive and multiplicative power line noises. The multiplicative PLC noise results in fading in the received signal strength. This paper provides the performance analysis of a PLC system over Rician fading channel under Nakagami-m distributed additive background noise assuming binary phase shift keying modulation scheme. We derive the probability density function of the decision variable. A numerically computable expression of the analytical average bit error rate of the considered system is obtained. The validity of the derived analytical expressions is closely verified by the simulated results. © 2015 IEEE.

BER analysis of PLC system under Rician channel gain over Nakagami-m additive noise

Power line communication (PLC) utilizes power lines for the purpose of electronic data transmission. Differential binary phase shift keying (DBPSK) is a popular modulation scheme proposed in the PLC standards like G3, PRIME, and IEEE P1901.2. This letter provides the performance evaluation of a PLC system assuming DBPSK modulation under the combined effect of Nakagami-m background noise and impulsive noise. We utilize a simple, yet accurate approximation available in literature to derive the probability density function of the sum of two Nakagami-m random variables. Closed-form expressions of the analytical average bit error rate and the outage probability of the system are derived. Validity of the derived analytical expressions is closely verified by simulated results. © 2016 IEEE.

On the Performance of a PLC System Assuming Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying

The sensitivity of a monolithically integrated semiconductor ring laser gyro is severely limited by the high value of the lock-in threshold. In this work, we calculate the lock-in threshold using perturbation theory and coupled mode theory analysis. It is shown that gyro sensitivity is limited to an input rotation rate of 108 deg / h due to nonlinear coupling between the countertraveling modes. This coupling arises due to the backreflection of modes from moving index gratings, induced by rotation. Lock-in threshold is directly proportional to the strength of nonlinear coupling and spatial overlap of the modes' energy densities with periodic index perturbations. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Limits imposed by nonlinear coupling on rotation sensitivity of a semiconductor ring laser gyroscope

The large requirement of power for fulfilling daily demands cannot be supplied with the help of a single unit or stored power, a large number of generating units are required to complete this demand. The scheduling of these units so as to generate the forecasted power at a minimum cost is known as Short Term Generation Scheduling Problem. It is one of the basic optimization problems in power systems. Different algorithms like lagrangian relaxation, particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm etc. have been used to address this problem. In this paper a better solution to Short Term Generation Scheduling Problem is proposed. The proposed WODE algorithm is a hybrid of Whale optimization algorithm and Differential Evolution algorithm. The proposed solution results in minimum generation cost as compared to cost involved while using other existing optimization algorithms. Results are shown for 10, 20 and 40 unit system and comparison of total cost and total computational times are listed for different algorithms. © 2016 IEEE.
