The IEEE 'Tactile Internet' (TI) Standards working group (WG), designated the numbering IEEE 1918.1, undertakes pioneering work on the development of standards for the TI. This paper describes the WG, its intentions, and its developing baseline standard and the associated reasoning behind that and touches on a further standard already initiated under its scope: IEEE 1918.1.1 on 'Haptic Codecs for the TI.' IEEE 1918.1 and its baseline standard aim to set the framework and act as the foundations for the TI, thereby also serving as a basis for further standards developed on TI within the WG. This paper discusses the aspects of the framework such as its created TI architecture, including the elements, functions, interfaces, and other considerations therein, as well as the novel aspects and differentiating factors compared with, e.g., 5G Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication, where it is noted that the TI will likely operate as an overlay on other networks or combinations of networks. Key foundations of the WG and its baseline standard are also highlighted, including the intended use cases and associated requirements that the standard must serve, and the TI's fundamental definition and assumptions as understood by the WG, among other aspects. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The IEEE 1918.1 "tactile Internet" standards working group and its standards

This article presents a second order Substrate Integrated Coaxial Line (SICL) based bandpass filter operating at 28 GHz with multiple transmission zeros. SICL cavity comprising of a L-bend line confined between a pair of dielectrics and shorted at both ends is conceived here. A bandpass filter is devised by coupling a pair of half-mode cavities generated from the proposed SICL cavity. In the designed bandpass filter, the selectivity is improved by placing a pair of transmission zeros on each lower and upper side of the passband. Three resonators operating in the out of band response of the bandpass filter is proposed to suppress the first higher order mode. These embedded resonators are realized by metallic vias connecting to the top conducting plane through a grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) line from the disconnected middle layer of SICL. Positioning of the three additional transmission zeros as a function of their GCPW length is analyzed. The proposed low insertion loss SICL filters exhibit 14.21% 11.64% 3-dB fractional bandwidth and a good out of the band performance with rejection level better than 20 dB in both below and above the passband. Utilization of compact size and electromagnetically robust filters designed in SICL technology provide notable front end millimeter-wave communication system. © 2019 European Microwave Association (EuMA).

Design of a Substrate Integrated Half Mode Coaxial Cavity Filter with Multiple Transmission Zeros

This article presents a compact substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL) based quadrature hybrid operating at 10 GHz specifically for X-band communication with controllable harmonic rejection. The proposed SICL based compact branch-line coupler utilizes four open-ended coaxial stubs. Design equations are analytically derived using even-odd mode analysis and the range of realizable impedance is graphically determined from the derived equations. Variation in position of transmission zero as a function of open-ended stub's electrical length is illustrated through simulation and a 15 dB harmonic rejection up to 31.8 GHz observed. The fabricated SICL based quadrature hybrid demonstrates a measured fractional bandwidth of 12.24% and occupies only 0.10λ2garea. Use of compact size and electromagnetically robust passive components designed in SICL technology provides exceptional front-end communication system. © 2019 IEEE.

In addition to accurate modeling of the real device physics, it is equally important for a model to behave reasonably well under different types of simulation environment. In this paper, we present the design of observer based event-triggered sliding mode control (ETSMC) for a chain of integrator system in the presence of matched uncertainties. In the scenario, where only output information is available, the observer is needed to observe all the states of the system. If a Luenberger observer is used the robustness property cannot be achieved, so it is appealing to use sliding mode observer (SMO). But conventional SMO does not give finite time convergence of all the observed states to their true values. Consequently, we use a higher order SMO (HOSMO) to observe all the states of the system in finite time. Also, to reduce computational effort, the behaviour of the system is analysed using this observer in the event-triggered environment. For this an ETSMC is proposed using these observed states and stability of the system is proved using Lyapunov analysis. It is also proved that the triggering instants generated using the proposed triggering rule do not lead to Zeno behaviour. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by simulation of a third order chain of integrator system. © 2019 EUCA.

Observer based event-triggered sliding mode control for uncertain chain of integrators system

With the help from all round technological growth, the control needs of many engineering processes are now better understood and better controlled. It has been noticed that during the prolonged concept development phase of sliding mode control (SMC), the control needs in arc-welding process, in particular, have drifted significantly. Now, single controller is capable of making all type of joint characteristics using different methods. Well-researched SMC concept has not been tried yet to develop multifunctional arc controller to cater multi input applications. Proportional-plus-integral controller, with assistance from modern soft-switched power converter topology, in particular, is strongly placed. In this brief, using super-twisting algorithm, the second-order SMC concept has been applied to design a complete multifunctional arc-welding controller. Apart from demonstrating superior control characteristics, this brief also elaborates the lateral impact of robustness measures. It also explores whether the proposed controller can deliver as a superior alternate for complete control of arc-welding process. © 2018 IEEE.

Multifunctional Arc-Welding Controller Using SOSMC Technique

We report on the fabrication of bottom gate top contact organic field effect transistors with hybrid gate dielectric and TIPS-Pentacene:PS blend as active layer on PowerCoat™ HD 230 paper substrate. The hybrid dielectric layer leads the devices operated at relatively low voltage of-10 V with avg. and maximum field effect mobility of 0.52(\pm 0.16) and 0.78 cm2 V-1 S-1 respectively, with near zero threshold voltage and on-off current ratio approaching 104. The devices have shown excellent operational stability when tested with DC bias stress of \mathrm{V}-{\mathrm{DS}}=\mathrm{V}-{\mathrm{GS}}=-10\ \mathrm{V} for 1 h and minuscule changes in electrical characteristics were observed with continuous multiple transfer cycle scans. In addition, we have demonstrated a resistive load inverter circuit with varying the load resistance with these paper OFETs. © 2019 IEEE.

Tips-pentacene: Ps blend organic field-effect transistors with hybrid gate dielectric on paper substrate

There are several physical systems which exhibit two-time scale property. When these systems are controlled through networks, uniform sampling causes an extra burden on the network bandwidth. Furthermore, uniform sampling of slow and fast variables leads to over-sampling of slow variables. This work proposes an event-trigger theory which leverages the physical property of discrete two-time scale system to reduce the requirement of network bandwidth. Events in slow and fast variables occur as per their respective dynamics and based on the occurrence of a respective event, only slow or fast variables are communicated through a network. Thus the communication of the state is carried out based on an event of the respective set of variables. Simulation studies are presented to validate the theoretical developments. © 2019 EUCA.

Event-trigger control of discrete two-time scale system by leveraging its intrinsic properties

This paper proposes periodic event-triggered control of singularly perturbed systems. The proposed triggering strategy allows periodic evaluation of triggering rule. Continuous state measurements are no longer required, instead, the states are measured periodically and are transmitted to controller only if certain condition based on the system performance is satisfied. Another advantage of this triggering mechanism is that there exists a uniform positive lower bound on the inter-event time which is equal to one sampling period at least. In this work, we use independent event-triggering mechanism for the slow and fast variables of the system. This allows state variables to be sampled at their natural frequency avoiding oversampling of slow variables. The proposed strategy ensures bounded stability of the closed-loop system. Simulation results are included to show the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2019 IEEE.

Periodic Event triggered Control of Singularly Perturbed systems

In this work, we have explored the effect of TIPSpentacene: polystyrene (PS) blend on electrical performance and photo-response of solution processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). It was observed that though the blend OFETs show better electrical performance, the photo-responsivity (R) of neat TIPS-pentacene OFETs was significantly better. This study was performed for different color lights such as blue, red, and green, as well as for ultraviolet light (UV). R was highest for blue color (~2600 mA/W for neat, ~230 mA/W for blend), and smaller for other cases. Low R value in blend devices is attributed to less trapping of photo-generated charge carriers during photo-illumination compared to their neat counterparts. © 2019 IEEE.
