A novel uniplanar electromagnetic band-gap structure to maintain power integrity by suppressing simultaneous switching noise is presented. The proposed EBG structure is having stop-band from 600 MHz to 5.3 GHz and can be used as power plane in high speed systems for minimizing the power noise. Suppression of resonant cavity modes of power plane by EBG structure is shown. Simulation results are verified by measurements and compared with the earlier published structures. © 2013 IEEE.

A novel EBG power plane structure for suppressing SSN in high speed systems

In this paper, a dual-frequency substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) longitudinal slot array antenna has been implemented with the combination of two 1×4 slot array etched on the top metallic surface of the line. The two arrays resonate at two distinctive frequencies (8.6 GHz & 10.8 GHz) within X band (8 - 12 GHz) with good radiation pattern at both frequencies along with a gain of 7.7 dB and 9 dB respectively. The two arrays have been fed by a single SIW line which reduces the complexity of feeding network. The proposed design shows good potential to control radiation pattern and side lobe level independently at both frequencies. © 2013 European Microwave Association.

Implementation of dual-frequency longitudinal slot array antenna on substrate integrated waveguide at X-band

A Dual-mode substrate integrated waveguide hexagonal cavity (SIHC) filter using hexagonal shaped cavity for X-Band application has been proposed in this paper. Use of perturbation technique to achieve dual mode response has been investigated. The field patterns of the degenerate modes and the mode splitting characteristics are also studied. The theoretical analysis with the help of coupling matrix is shown and experimental verification is also presented. © 2013 IEEE.

Design of dual-mode substrate integrated hexagonal cavity (SIHC) filter for X-band application

In this paper, a novel design of broadband coaxial to substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) transition has been implemented. The difficulties to get impedance matching between SIW and excitation port especially for thin substrate has been investigated and design steps to overcome the problem has been discussed. A two port SIW section using back-to-back configuration of the proposed transition is designed to operate at X-band (8-12 GHz) and fabricated. The measured result shows a broad bandwidth (30%) and an insertion loss of 1.2 dB in the operating band. © 2013 IEEE.

Design of a broadband coaxial to substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) transition

Saliency detection techniques have been widely used in various 2D multimedia processing applications. Currently, the emerging applications of stereoscopic display require new saliency detection models for stereoscopic images. Different from saliency detection for 2D images, depth features have to be taken into account in saliency detection for stereoscopic images. In this paper, we propose a new stereoscopic saliency detection framework based on the feature contrast of color, intensity, texture, and depth. Four types of features including color, luminance, texture, and depth are extracted from DC-T coefficients to represent the energy for image patches. A Gaussian model of the spatial distance between image patches is adopted for the consideration of local and global contrast calculation. A new fusion method is designed to combine the feature maps for computing the final saliency map for stereoscopic images. Experimental results on a recent eye tracking database show the superior performance of the proposed method over other existing ones in saliency estimation for 3D images. © 2013 IEEE.

Saliency detection for stereoscopic images

Tone mapping operators (TMOs) employed to visualize high dynamic range (HDR) content on conventional low dynamic range (LDR) devices suffer from two major drawbacks. First, none of them can faithfully reproduce all the contrast present in HDR images. Second, most of them require one or more parameters which are mostly content specific and their optimal values can be set only via subjective testing. To address these issues, this paper proposes that 'quality driven' adaptive contrast enhancement is a practical solution. This is achieved by enhancing the contrast adaptively based on the loss of contrast between the HDR and tone mapped image. Experimental results confirm that the proposed adaptive solution always improves upon the contrast achieved from whatever given TMO parameter settings in the tested images. So it helps to achieve the results of a more optimal TMO parameter setting without the human input. © 2013 IEEE.

Adaptive contrast adjustment for postprocessing of tone mapped high dynamic range images

A noise-enhanced contrast stretching algorithm for enhancement of dark images in SVD-DWT domain has been presented in this paper. A dark or low-contrast image is considered to be comprising a weak signal (information) and noise (due to insufficient illumination). Since singular values of an image represent luminance of independent image layers, the internal noise may be considered to be inherent in the singular values of the image, as well that of the wavelet approximation coefficients of a dark image. The singular values of the approximation coefficients are iteratively processed using the analogy of a double-well system exhibiting dynamic stochastic resonance (SR), where addition of noise is utilized to enhance system performance. Iteration is terminated with the criterion of target contrast and visual qualities. Comparison with other SR-based and non-SR based algorithms shows noteworthy performance of the algorithm in the SVD-DWT domain. © 2013 IEEE.

Noise-enhanced contrast stretching of dark images in SVD-DWT domain

A series of dihalo- and bis-aroyl-substituted benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b′] dithiophene-4,5-diones were synthesized, and their electronic, electrochemical, and electrical properties investigated. Synthetic strategies to increase (i) the conjugation length of the base molecular structure-through introduction of thiophene units bearing electronically neutral substituents (hydrogen or alkyl groups) or strong electron-withdrawing pentafluorobenzoyl group(s)-and (ii) the electron affinity-by moving to a benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d′]bis(thiazole)-4,5- dione structure-were developed. Molecular packing in the single crystal was studied by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, and this information was subsequently used in the determination of the electronic band structures, densities of states (DOS), effective transfer integrals, and effective charge-carrier masses via density functional theory (DFT) methods. The charge-carrier transport properties of the benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b′]dithiophene- 4,5-dione and benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d′]bis(thiazole)-4,5-dione derivatives were investigated through the fabrication and characterization of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) via both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited films. 2,7-Bis-pentafluorobenzoyl-benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b′] dithiophene-4,5-dione (10a) exhibited field-effect behavior with an average electron mobility μe = 4.4 (±1.7) × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 when the active layer was vacuum-deposited, and a larger μe= 6.9 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 when the active layer was solution-processed. These results are in stark contrast with the DFT-determined electronic band structure and effective mass, which indicate that the material possesses good intrinsic charge-carrier transport characteristics. The combined results reveal the importance of thin-film processing and that further processing refinements could lead to improved device performance. Only one material with benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d′]bis(thiazole)-4,5-dione core, 2,7-bis-(4-n-hexyl-thiophene-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d′]bis(thiazole)-4, 5-dione (19d), showed average μe = 8.2 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1 in OFET with solution-processed active layer. Unexpectedly, measurable hole transport was observed for 2,7-bis-(5-n-nonyl-thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b′]dithiophene-4, 5-dione (19b) (μh = 8.5 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1) and 2,6-bis-(thiophen-2-yl)-3,5-di-n-hexyl-4H- cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b′]dithiophen-4-one (30a) (μh = 3.7 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1). © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.

Benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b′]dithiophene(dithiazole)-4,5-dione derivatives: Synthesis, electronic properties, crystal packing and charge transport

Fetal phonocardiography (fPCG) based antenatal care system is economical and has a potential to use for long-term monitoring due to noninvasive nature of the system. The main limitation of this technique is that noise gets superimposed on the useful signal during its acquisition and transmission. Conventional filtering may result into loss of valuable diagnostic information from these signals. This calls for a robust, versatile, and adaptable denoising method applicable in different operative circumstances. In this work, a novel algorithm based on wavelet transform has been developed for denoising of fPCG signals. Successful implementation of wavelet theory in denoising is heavily dependent on selection of suitable wavelet basis function. This work introduces a new mother wavelet basis function for denoising of fPCG signals. The performance of newly developed wavelet is found to be better when compared with the existing wavelets. For this purpose, a two-channel filter bank, based on characteristics of fPCG signal, is designed. The resultant denoised fPCG signals retain the important diagnostic information contained in the original fPCG signal. © 2013 Vijay S. Chourasia and Anil Kumar Tiwari.

Design methodology of a new wavelet basis function for fetal phonocardiographic signals

This work mainly deals with the sliding mode control for non-linear model of sloshing liquid in a container. Slosh coupled with container dynamics represents a class of underactuated systems with coupled non-linear equations. A pendulum model is used to model the lateral slosh. A linear sliding surface-based sliding mode control is derived. The reduced order system equation during sliding mode becomes non-linear when the non-linear system is constrained to the linear surface. Here a new method is proposed for the stability analysis of the reduced order non-linear system using Lyapunov stability theory. Simulations are carried out to validate the method. Experimental work is carried out to implement the designed sliding mode control strategy on the slosh-container system and corresponding results are also reported.
