This paper presents the planning scheme for a cooperative agent-based multimedia retrieval architecture that integrates a heterogeneous set of repositories Into a coherent information system. The agents in the system collaborate In context of a conceptual query to formulate unique retrieval strategies for the different collections. The retrieval plan makes need-based use of Independent content analysis tools available on the network. The retrieval strategies for the repositories so formulated satisfy the specified constraints on quality of results and the response time requirements. The retrieval plan is reactively updated based on the retrieval performance at the Individual repositories. We present some experimental results to show the effectiveness of the planning scheme for repositories with different characteristics and the scalability of the architecture. We present a prototype implementation of this architecture that Integrates a set of dissimilar collections of multimedia data on Indian cultural heritage. A comparison of the retrieval results with some existing Internet search tools proves the effectiveness of the architecture.

Distributed and reactive query planning in R-MAGIC: An agent-based multimedia retrieval system

Fingerprint classification is important for different practical applications. An accurate and consistent classification can greatly reduce fingerprint-matching time for large databases. We use a Gabor filter-based Feature extraction scheme to generate a 384 dimensional feature vector for each fingerprint image. The classification of these patterns is done through a novel two stage classifier in which K Nearest Neightbour (KNN) acts as the first step and finds out the two most frequently represented classes amongst the K nearest patterns, followed by the pertinent SVM classifier choosing the most apt class of the two. 6 SVMs have to be trained for a four class problem, ( 6C 2), that is, all one-against-one SVMs. Using this novel scheme and working on the FVC 2000 database (257 final images) we achieved a maximum accuracy of 98.81% with a rejection percentage of 1.95%.This is significantly higher than most reported results in contemporary literature. The SVM training time was 145 seconds, i.e. 24 seconds per SVM on a Pentium III machine. ©2004 IEEE.

Gabor filter based fingerprint classification using support vector machines

This paper presents a robust shape-based on-line tracker for simultaneously tracking the motion of both hands, that is robust to cases of background clutter, other moving objects, occlusions of one hand by the other, and a wide range of illumination variations. The tracker is based on an on-line predictive Eigen Tracking framework. This framework allows efficient tracking of articulate objects, which change in appearance across views. We show results of successful tracking across all possible cases of motion dynamics of both hands during occlusion, and a wide range of illumination conditions. © 2004 IEEE.

Robust shape based two hand tracker

Many three-dimensional (3-D) object recognition strategies use aspect graphs to represent objects in the model base. A crucial factor in the success of these object recognition strategies is the accurate construction of the aspect graph, its ease of creation, and the extent to which it can represent all views of the object for a given setup. Factors such as noise and nonadaptive thresholds may introduce errors in the feature detection process. This paper presents a characterization of errors in aspect graphs, as well as an algorithm for estimating aspect graphs, given noisy sensor data. We present extensive results of our strategies applied on a reasonably complex experimental set, and demonstrate applications to a robust 3-D object recognition problem.

Aspect graph construction with noisy feature detectors

This paper is concerned with the problem of recognition of dynamic hand gestures. We have considered gestures which are sequences of distinct hand poses. In these gestures hand poses can undergo motion and discrete changes. However, continuous deformations of the hand shapes are not permitted. We have developed a recognition engine which can reliably recognize these gestures despite individual variations. The engine also has the ability to detect start and end of gesture sequences in an automated fashion. The recognition strategy uses a combination of static shape recognition (performed using contour discriminant analysis), Kalman filter based hand tracking and a HMM based temporal characterization scheme. The system is fairly robust to background clutter and uses skin color for static shape recognition and tracking. A real time implementation on standard hardware is developed. Recognition of dynamic hand gestures

In this paper, we focus on content based access and manipulation techniques for digital video. We review different techniques developed for extraction of contents of video using visual information. We then present description of a system which can extract video object based representation of video sequences and builds up a video object based description of the content of the video collection. We also present a brief review of another technology which provides for interactive manipulation of the video content through interaction with audio-visual objects like digital actors. © 2003 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Hybrid FEB Face Recognition Algorithm \r

A large volume of legacy documents in Indian languages exist only in paper form. Web based interactive access techniques for images of these documents can ensure wider dissemination and easy availability. In this paper, we have proposed an access mechanism based on word based indexing and personalized annotation. The word based indexing scheme exploits typical structural characteristics of Indian scripts. We have combined this word indexing technique with personalized annotation based hyperlinking and query scheme for providing an interactive access interface to a collection of Indian language documents. © 2003 IEEE.

Devising interactive access techniques for Indian language document images

The use of soft computing techniques for medical image analysis is reviewed in this paper. These techniques involve application of fuzzy logic, neural network and evolutionary algorithms. We introduce the different imaging modalities and motivation for using soft computing techniques for medical image analysis. We review different soft computing based approaches for image processing and segmentation, which can improve the diagnostic value of the images. We also present some results with MRI images. Based on these approaches we suggest an architectural framework for soft computing based application development. © 2003 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Soft computing techniques for medical image analysis

In this paper, a detailed experimental study of face detection algorithms based on "Skin Color" has been made. Three color spaces, RGB, YCbCr and HSI are of main concern. We have compared the algorithms based on these color spaces and have combined them to get a new skin color based face detection algorithm which gives higher accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is good enough to localize a human face in an image with an accuracy of 95.18%.
