Spanning tree protocol (STP) is a link layer protocol used for link management, prevention of loop formation etc. in the network. Although STP is widely used, it is still prone to many kinds of attacks that exploit the lack of security features both in basic working process and STP packet format. By exploiting STP control packet an attacker can pretend to be the new root in STP domain and perform unauthorized activities that lead to root take-over attack, STP control packet flooding, traffic redirection and so on. In this paper, a coverage based distributed intrusion detection system (DIDS) has been introduced, for the detection of attacks on STP. The proposed scheme computes a set of switches in the network that can cover the STP network completely; where every switch belongs to that set is installed with a small module of IDS. This set of IDSs logically divides the STP network into a set of local zones. All the switches in a zone is directly connected to one switch installed with IDS and thus covered by at least one IDS in STP domain. Each IDS can detect and verify any exploit inside its local zone. Additionally IDSs communicate with each other so that any exploit outside the local zone of a particular IDS can also be detected and verified. The results show that the proposed DIDS approach can detect all the STP based attacks. © 2011 IEEE.

Exploit detection techniques for STP using distributed IDS

In this paper, we present novel topological features based on the structural shape of a character. We detect the convexshaped segments formed by the various strokes. The convex segments are then represented with shape primitives from a repertoire. The character is represented as a spatial layout of convex segments. We formulate feature templates for Bangla characters. A given character is assigned the label of the best matching feature template. We have tested the method on a benchmark datasets of printed and handwritten Bangla basic and compound character images. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

Topological features for recognizing printed and handwritten Bangla characters

Wireless technologies are evolving in rapid pace and becoming cheaper - this can be used to facilitate providing primary healthcare services in rural India. We have built a decision support system which can provide first level assessment of a patient by taking all the symptoms as well as vital parameters like heart rate, blood pressure, etc. It can also provide some basic treatment suggestions like Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) for diarrhea, etc. The patient details as well as assessment can be uploaded to a server, which can be assessed by a doctor to provide actual treatment. The patient details can also be used for analytical purpose for drafting plans for future by Government agencies. The system also works as personal assistant for ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) health workers to assist them to do their job efficiently. This system mainly has three components: Mobile Client, Server and Database. Mobile clients are used to collect data from patients and provide first level assessment. Server component will process the data for the purpose of analysis and Authorized Doctors can retrieve patient details, ask few more questions to the patient via ASHA worker and can provide treatments over SMS or email. Database system will be used to archive data for analysis purposes.

A system to provide primary healthcare services to rural India more efficiently and transparently

We propose a novel hierarchical framework for scene categorization. The scene representation is defined by latent topics extracted by Latent Dirichlet Allocation. The interaction of these topics across scene categories is learned by probabilistic graphical modelling. We use Conditional Random Fields in a hierarchical setting for discovering the global context of these topics. The learned random fields are further used for categorization of a new scene. The experimental results of the proposed framework is presented on standard datasets and on image collection obtained from the internet. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Scene categorization using topic model based hierarchical conditional random fields

In this paper an improved, macroblock (MB) level, visual saliency algorithm, aimed at video compression, is presented. A Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) is trained over 3 dimensional feature vectors, pertaining to global, local and rarity measures of conspicuity, to yield probabalistic values which form the saliency map. These saliency values are used for non-uniform bit-allocation over video frames. A video compression architecture for propagation of saliency values, saving tremendous amount of computation, is also proposed. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A scheme for attentional video compression

Forensic watermarking is a tool for secure transmission of forensic questioned documents. The reported cases of fraudulent manipulation of forensic case documents are basic motivation behind the application proposed in this paper. Earlier approaches in forensic watermarking embed watermark onto whole document which is highly susceptible to attack. We have proposed a RROI based forensic watermarking of case documents which basically represents the rectangular region of a document (fingerprint/signature) that needs to be watermarked. In this, DCT and DWT based transform domain watermarking techniques were implemented on RROI and the performance of the two were compared on the basis of PSNR. Moreover, some attacks like scaling and addition of noise have been performed to check the robustness of the watermark. © 2011 IEEE.

A novel approach for securing forensic documents using rectangular region-of-interest (RROI)

Indexing and retrieval performance over digitized document collection significantly depends on the performance of available Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The paper presents a novel document indexing framework which attends the document digitization errors in the indexing process to improve the overall retrieval accuracy. The proposed indexing framework is based on topic modeling using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). The OCR's confidence in correctly recognizing a symbol is propagated in topic learning process such that semantic grouping of word examples carefully distinguishes between commonly confusing words. We present a novel application of Lucene with topic modeling for document indexing application. The experimental evaluation of the proposed framework is presented on document collection belonging to Devanagari script. © 2011 IEEE.

Searching OCR'ed text: An LDA based approach

This paper presents integration and testing scheme for managing a large Multilingual OCR Project. The project is an attempt to implement an integrated platform for OCR of different Indian languages. Software engineering, workflow management and testing processes have been discussed in this paper. The OCR has now been experimentally deployed for some specific applications and currently is being enhanced for handling the space and time constraints, achieving higher recognition accuracies and adding new functionalities. Experiences of integration and performance testing of Multilingual OCR for printed Indian scripts

We present a novel dance posture based annotation model by combining features using Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL). We have proposed a novel feature representation which represents the local texture properties of the image. The annotation model is defined in the direct acyclic graph structure using the binary MKL algorithm. The bag-of-words model is applied for image representation. The experiments have been performed on the image collection belonging to two Indian classical dances (Bharatnatyam and Odissi). The annotation model has been tested using SIFT and the proposed feature individually and by optimally combining both the features. The experiments have shown promising results. © 2011 IEEE.
